Lost in Space: Island in the Sky (Episode 3) (1965) Review

Lost in Space: Island in the Sky (Episode 3) (1965)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Island In The Sky" is without a doubt my personal favourite of all of the excellent episodes of the first black and white season of "Lost In Space'. It is very sad that a series that started out so wonderfully, full of exciting storylines, superb special effects and great characters should have been allowed to drift off into a semi comic approach that not only spoilt the series but contributed to its ultimate demise. I believe any diehard fan of the series would agree that the first season of "lost In Space', is terrific and no episode is more enjoyable than Episode number three "Island In the Sky".
I agree with an earlier reviewer that this episode is really a benchmark for what the rest of the series should have been measured on. So much that is important in the series occurs in this action packed episode. As an exciting beginning to the episode we see Prof. John Robinson (Guy Williams) parajetting himself down to investigate the strange planet that the Jupiter 2 is circling in the hope of landing for much needed repairs,Dr Smith is at his most devious here and not only does he seek to kill all members of the crew but he tampers with the breaking rockets in both John's parajets and those of the main spaceship. The fantastic crash landing sequence where we see the Jupiter 2 coming in for a rough landing on the planet's rugged surface was without a doubt some of the most stunning photography done on "Lost In Space" or any other series in the 1960's. Even when watching this episode today the sight of the spaceship flying down among the dagged rocks still thrills me , so superbly filmed it is. Once on the planet we are treated to some great location photography of the mysterious planet's terrain which was partly filmed in Red Rock Canyon near Las Vegas. This location shooting really added a strange eerie feeling to these earlier episodes of the series and made you really feel that this was a unknown planet far beyond our solar system. We get to see for the first time in "Island In The Sky" the wonderful Chariot, the Robinson's onland travelling vechicle, a marvel of 1960's technical know how and also in this episode we are introduced to the "bloop", a lovable furry little monkey with strange ears who is christened Debbie and would become Penny's pet for the first part of the series.
What I also like about this episode is the impending sense of danger and of being in the unknown which is felt in every frame of the story. It really builds up the excitement and dramatic appeal. The story also benefits from the contributions of some very fine actors in the cast. I feel far too much attention is always focused on Jonathan Harris in his role of Dr. Smith. Naturally his villian character was essential to building the storyline and creating the tension and indeed in this episode he is wonderful as the deadly sabouter who will do anything to get back to Earth. However I have always felt that the characters of the Robinson family and Major West are potentially just as interesting. With great performers like Guy Williams, June Lockhart, Mark Goddard, Billy Mumy, Angela Cartwright and Marta Kristen the show was blessed with acting talent in abundance and no episode uses that talent better than "Island In The Sky".
I grew up with "Lost In Space" and still love it now. The first season is the one to really watch with its serious themes, great guest stars and terrific special effects. I cannot recommend "Island In The Sky", highly enough. Combined with the following story, "There Were Giants In the Earth" you have a classic double of first class SciFi entertainment from the golden age of television. Enjoy!

The series gets better and better, each character becomes more endearing. It's easy to get engaged in the struggles of the family, but I suggest starting with Series 1 & 2 to understand the history of the family and to appreciate their dilemmas. Set in some spectacular scenery in Scotland, and produced with very high production value, this series is a rare treat. I can't wait for Series 5&6.

Ramar of the Jungle, Volume 1 (1952) Review

Ramar of the Jungle, Volume 1 (1952)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jon Hall stars as Dr. Tom Reynolds, or "Ramar" in this jungle adventure series set in Africa and, later, India. The series ran 52 episodes over a two year period from 1952 to 1954 and was broadcast well into the 1960s in syndication. The stock scenes of wildlife were good, but didn't always mesh well with scenes set in obvious studio "jungles." Besides Hall, also in the weekly cast were Ray Montgomery as Professor Howard Ogden and Nick Stewart as their native guide, Willy-Willy. Look for Woody (billed as "Woodrow") Strode in two of the four episodes on this DVD.
Alpha Video's DVD presentation is reasonably good, considering the age of the broadcasts; video contrast is, for the most part, good and the audio is clear throughout all four episodes. The show isn't great, but it's enjoyable enough on its own terms and will certainly bring back lots of memories for Baby Boomers and those who enjoy television from the early days. Alpha has also released a second volume on DVD with an additional four episodes. Episode titles on this first volume include "Dark Venture," "Voice of the Past," "King of the Watus," and "Lady of the Leopards."
My rating is closer to *** & 1/2.

This is the one that fans of Kimba the White Lion have been waiting for! It contains the original theme music and voices from the 1965 version! The video releases of some Kimba episodes in the 1990s were disappointing, containing a new, somewhat boring theme tune, and different character voices. This box set is superb - all 52 episodes are fully restored, complete with the original soundtrack, and the discs are beautifully presented. It brought back wonderful memories, and the new generation just love the stories!

The I Love Lucy - 50th Anniversary Special (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I LOVE Lucy. "I Love Lucy" is the greatest show ever, but this botched special celebrating the series' 50th anniversary was just bad. Who cares what Andy Garcia, Cher or Roseanne have to say? I would like to have seen more focus on William Frawley and Vivian Vance, whose on-screen chemistry with Ball and Arnaz really helped to make "I Love Lucy" so funny. It goes to show you that the days of wonderfully funny shows like "I Love Lucy" are long gone. Not one person in Hollywood today is talented enough to hold a candle to the producers and creators of "Lucy" and this [bad] attempt at a two hour special to celebrate it is a mockery of the show's half century contribution to laughter.

The Andy Milonakis Show - The Complete Second Season (2005) Review

The Andy Milonakis Show - The Complete Second Season (2005)
Average Reviews:

Andy Milonakis is a fool simply put. Dude is crazy funny. Is it because he is a grown man in the body of a 12 year old boy, or just his dead pan humor? Who knows? What is known is that his MTV series is a big hit and the shows second season arrives on DVD on October 10th. On his variety show, filled with skits, crazy movies, and antics in his New York apartment Andy often has special guests.
Now is your chance to own the episode in which Andy was fit for a set of grillz by none other than Paul Wall himself. Paul Wall isn't the only hip-hopper who appeared on the show during it's second season. Juelz Santana and Mike Jones also appear in second season episodes. Andy himself has some skills on the microphone and he takes on Backstreet Boy member Nick Carter in a rap battle. Other season two special guests include Seth Green, Nick Cannon, and Jimmy Kimmel.
The Andy Milonakis show is one of the few laugh out loud funny shows on television. Fans of the show will be pleased with the DVD set. The set includes a total of 15 unaired skits total. Oh yeah, if you have a chance, be sure to check out Andy in the movie Waiting which is also on DVD.
Special Features
-Commentary featuring Andy, Ralphie, Larry, Rivka, and Billy
-Unaired Skits
-Outtakes
-Season 2 Music Video

Pure rip off. I'm upset about it too. I bought this DVD because I wanted to purchase a specific video of a particular comedian: Rasheed Thurmond, who is HILARIOUS! If you type his name on this website's search field - the "bad boys" video comes up. I distinctly remember that this show is where I first saw Rasheed. Problem? He's NOT on the DVD. The show I saw had Rasheed and way other funny comedians who don't appear on this DVD at all. The seller must have wanted to be safe and kept the mediocre ones for this DVD in my opinion. Rasheed is not for everyone. Either that or what we purchased was the "short version" of season 1. He was THE BEST ever on that show. Too funny for words. If you don't believe me, google his name and watch his comedy clips. You will cry laughing. Or take a look here...[....] (scroll down).

Lucy's Lost Episodes Review

Lucy's Lost Episodes

I've owned this video for several years and viewed it before reviewing it. It includes several Bob Hope show episodes that Lucy and Desi were on including a rare "I Love Lucy" episode with Bob Hope playing Ricky and Desi playing Fred and Bill Frawley playing a captain. The highlights of it is the "Westing House" promotion with Lucy trying to get new things for her dressing room. My favorite thing was a 1953 ad for perms with Lucy and Desi. It's the very last thing on the tape. The quality of the video is very grainy and sometimes it might be hard to see some things at times but it's not all like that. I'd give it 5 stars if the grain wasn't so bad at times. It's a great video!

The History Channel Presents The Presidents (2005) Review

The History Channel Presents The Presidents (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The History Channel re-aired this series recently in a marathon one Saturday. I was at work, and it was a slow day, and we happened to turn on the TV when the programs were up to about Abraham Lincoln, in the early afternoon. For the remainder of the day, besides a few minutes here and there of having to take phone calls, my co-worker and I were absolutely glued to the TV. When 4:00 came around, I got home as quick as I could, and my fiancee and I saw and watched at least another hour of the program together.
Of course, the programs are not as in-depth as some of the more serious history buffs might have hoped for, but they were great for providing not only a general overview of each President's administration, but also for giving you a sense of the feel of the times in which each President lived; plus there was plenty of misc. trivia along the way - "useless information", as I like to call it - and I loved that, as well, because it's just interesting stuff that you would never hear in a history class.
My fiancee and I intend to buy this program and show it to our kids one day, because it seemed very much to us like something that would be good for them, and we plan to put a lot of work into their education.
In short, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND this series.

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes Review

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes

I now have both collections -- the classic 39 and the "lost episodes", and thank God for whoever it was who decided to put the whole shebang on tape. The "bang, zoom", "Baby, you're the greatest", "Hey, Ralphie booooy", and "You're a sweet kid" won't ever get old. The only slight fly in the ointment as far as I'm concerned is Joyce Randolph's overacting, but that's a minor fly indeed -- the two collections are more than well worth the $ they cost, because there has never been another "Honeymooners", and there will never be another either. It's a classic no matter how you cut it!

The Twilight Zone: Vol. 6 (1959) Review

The Twilight Zone: Vol. 6 (1959)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Vol. 6 is worth seeing for the episode "The Passerby", an extremely well-produced show. The set alone is very impressive, as is the plot device of the continuous procession of weary, bedraggled soldiers, especially as night falls.
I am greatly disappointed at author Mark Zicree's negative remarks about this episode in his "TZ Companion"; believe me, his opinions are just that, and he totally misses the beauty and eloquence of this show. True, the pace is weary and measured, but that's exactly what the plot demands. He says that James Gregory is "too old" to play a Confederate Sargeant----has he ever seen actual photos from the Civil War??? Men of ALL ages fought---and they aged tremendously from the torturous rigors of war.
Johanna Linville is wonderful--always on the edge of tears, heartsick, lost in her dreams of the past. Sure Mr. Zicree, WE all know what's happening fairly early on in the show---but SHE DOESN"T---she's too "disconnected" from reality to grasp it.
Fred Steiner's noble and elegaic score is wonderful, and the overall look of the show is terrific. There's even a real shocker of a scene involving a Union Lieutenant---even though James Gregory's lead-in dialogue and explanation during that scene is pretty contrived and "over-the-top".
And the final twist----how touchingly understated!
----------------------------
The rest of the dvd is variable. "The Grave" is OK in terms of atmosphere, and we all like watching Lee Marvin but COME ON--the ending is really stupid--no other way to say it!
Joseph Schildkraut, one of the great actors of all time, is excellent in "Death's Head Revisited" ---- a very moody and gripping morality play---(and rather daring for its time).
"Jeff Myrtlebank" is OK. Zicree thinks it's fabulous. Cute, maybe, but its minor stuff.
Buy it and judge for yourself.
