I love these documentaries. I don't quite understand the viewpoint of the other review. I work in the film industry and these docs are extremely well made by the best directors in documentary filmmaking.
They picked days in history that lead up to great events - turning points. They highlighted parts of our history that we rarely hear about in school or otherwise and I found them fascinating. My husband and I watched them together and would have wonderful discussions afterward. The subject matter was thought provoking and I felt showed how events from our past affect the future.
Each one was done in a different style with a different director. It seemed to me that content dictated the each style - very well executed. I highly recommend these films. Bravo!

The History Channel Ultimate Collections: World War II Review

The History Channel Ultimate Collections: World War II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great ten disc set showcasing what the History Channel always did best in my opinion - document World War II. I haven't liked how the History Channel has "mainstreamed" its offerings over the last few years, and thus this set is a real treat for long time viewers. It's also great for your kids to watch if they think that history is boring - it will change their minds. The following are the set's contents:
DISC ONE:
World War II: The War in Europe - Part 1
This disc contains four episodes from War Chronicles, a multiple-episode series of war documentaries written and directed by Don Horan, and hosted and narrated by actor Patrick O'Neal. Running about 26 minutes each in length, the episodes included on this disc were produced in 1983 and 1985. They feature no interviews, just O'Neal and at times, an anonymous narrator who, inexplicable, drops in additional voice-over material explaining in detailed narration over the graphic archival footage, the various battle campaigns. Primitive visual aids are used to highlight the action which at times consist of just O'Neal, pointing at a map. The episodes included are:
The Greatest Conflict: From the German Blitzkrieg to the Allies' bloody battle for Berlin.
North Africa...The Desert War: Details the German attack on Kasserine Pass, where the British 1st Army and untested American troops faced the full force of Germany's seasoned Afrika Corps.
The Beachhead at Anzio: Follow the story of the Allied landing, the brutal German counterattack, and the final Allied offensive that would turn the tide of this historic battle.
D-Day...The Normandy Invasion: discusses the largest amphibious assault in world history.
DISC TWO:
World War II: The War in Europe - Part 2
A continuation of disc one material. The episodes included are:
Pursuit to the Rhine: The Allies thrust forward under tactical air support to break through German lines, and the enemy resistance ultimately crumbled.
The Bomber Offensive: Air War in Europe: The Allies launched this historic raid on a German munitions factory and ultimately paid an extraordinary price in men and machines, but this battle would prove to be a turning point.

The Battle of the Bulge: It was the largest pitched battle in American military history, the last major engagement of the European campaign, and the scene of some of the war's fiercest fighting, leading to a final blow against the Nazis.
The Battle of Germany: The final campaign of the European theater unfolded in the aftermath of the Battle of the Bulge with the British and Canadian offensive, the historic crossing of the Rhine at Remagen, and Eisenhower's final drive to Berlin.
DISC THREE:
World War II: The War in the Pacific - Part 1
Again, this is just O'Neal explaining in detailed narration over the graphic archival footage, the various battle campaigns. The episodes included are:
Island Hopping: The Road Back: Follow the epic story of the Allies' island-by-island Pacific campaign in which they utilized massive amphibious assaults.
Jungle Warfare: New Guinea to Burma: In the jungles of the Pacific, soldiers battled not only the Japanese, but malaria, heat exhaustion, and swarms of parasites.
Air War in the Pacific: Chronicling the war's first days through the suicidal Kamikaze attacks and the bombing missions that brought the war to the Japanese homeland, this documentary utilizes extensive air combat footage.
The Bloody Ridges of Peleliu: From the opening naval bombardment, to the hand-to-hand combat and vicious guerrilla warfare, this is the complete story of this brutal and historic battle.
DISC FOUR:
A continuation of disc three. The episodes included are:
The Return to the Philippines: From MacArthur's strategy to the heroics of the ground troops, the 7th Fleet's naval forces, and the pilots of the Air Force, the saga of the Philippines is a story of unstoppable determination.
Okinawa...The Last Battle: Winston Churchill described it as the most intense and famous battle in military history. Witness the desperate, suicidal resistance of the Japanese in the final battle of the Pacific campaign.
In addition to the two War Chronicles episodes, this disc contains a 1995 episode of the Biography series, hosted by Jack Perkins. Perkins, who seemed to pop up on A&E every half hour in the 1990's, was a genial host with a trademark AM radio voice delivery that hooked people into watching his shows. Here, Perkins narrates a 45 minute tribute, with help from interviews with military historians, to Admiral William Halsey who led the Battle of the Bismarck Sea and helped neutralize the Japanese offensive.
DISC FIVE:
Biography: General Douglas MacArthur: Return of a Legend
This disc contains another 50 minute A&E Biography episode, hosted by Jack Perkins, discussing the life and career of General Douglas MacArthur. This episode is narrated by noted actor Fritz Weaver:
General Douglas MacArthur: Return of a Legend: General Douglas MacArthur was one of America's greatest and most complex commanders, a warrior so tough and determined that he helped win World War II with a simple promise: "I shall return." Featuring rare footage and interviews with MacArthur's comrades, family, and friends, this Biography program reveals the man who remains a hero to millions.
DISC SIX:
Okinawa: The Final Battle
This disc contains a 50 minute documentary made in 1995, narrated by Fritz Weaver again, exploring the bloody battle in the Pacific.
Okinawa: The Final Battle: At Okinawa, over 250,000 people fought a desperate battle for control of the island, in which nearly half of them died. Dramatic footage, much of it unseen for decades, captures the chaos and destruction of this battle, and military historians probe its lasting legacy.
DISC SEVEN:
Empires of Industry: War Planes of World War II
This disc contains a 50 minute documentary, narrated by Peter Thomas, exploring the planes that were used during WWII. This 1998 documentary is part of the popular A&E Empires of Industry series:
War Planes of World War II: Flight was born in America at the turn of the century. But World War II saw more planes built in a single year - 300,000 - than had been built in the previous forty. Modern shots of restored aircraft, historic footage ranging from factory floors to dogfights, and interviews with pilots and designers recapture the aviation industry's finest hour.
DISC EIGHT:
Nuremberg: Tyranny on Trial
This disc contains a History Channel 1995 50 minute documentary, narrated by Paul Sparer, giving a detailed look at the war tribunals in Nuremberg.
DISC NINE:
Great Blunders of World War II - Part 1
This disc contains four, 21 minute episodes from The History Channel miniseries, Great Blunders of World War II. These compact little docs from 1998 are fascinating looks at the fatal mistakes made by the Axis powers, that aided the Allied victory:
The German Blunder at Dunkirk: The 1940 Blitzkrieg upon Europe drove the British Expeditionary Force into the sea at Dunkirk, but the reckless plan of attack turned the chance to destroy the British into history's greatest escape.
Hitler's Declaration of War on the U.S.: Even with Hitler's forces ravaging Europe, America hesitated to join the fight against him. All that changed, however, with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and a foolish decision by Germany to ally with Japan.
The Pilot who Bombed London: One lost and confused German pilot mistakenly dropped his bombs on London, igniting what became known as the Blitz and pushing Britain's durability to its furthest limits.
Hitler's Flying Blunders: The Luftwaffe's lighting-fast, short-range fighter-bombers were used in support of highly mobile ground forces, a strategy which ultimately went horribly awry.
In addition to these four episodes, two additional episodes of Great Blunders of World War II are included: The Battle of the Bulge and A Bridge Too Far.
DISC TEN:
Great Blunders of World War II - Part 2
A continuation of the material on disc nine.
Japan's Mistakes at Midway: On June 4, 1942, the fanatical and efficient Japanese war machine wanted to finish off the U.S. Pacific Fleet, but their blind arrogance and underestimation of American willpower led them to disaster instead.
The Failure of the Kamikaze: Steeped in the ancient code of the Samurai, Kamikaze forces on land, sea, and air sacrificed themselves in battle in a desperate bid for victory that spelled ultimate doom for the Japanese Empire.
Death at Stalingrad: In Hitler's quest to take Stalingrad at all costs, he underestimated both the Russian winter and the steadfastness of the Russian people in the face of the Nazi threat.
Operation Sea Lion: In the wake of the British army's flight from France, the British were all but beaten. But a Nazi invasion of England was inexplicably postponed, diverting certain triumph and ultimately leading to the Allied victory.
In addition to these four episodes, two additional episodes of Great Blunders of World War II are included: The Bomb Plot to Kill Hitler and The Scattering of Convoy PQ17.

Civil War Journal: Set 1 (6 VHS Set) (1994) Review

Civil War Journal: Set 1 (6 VHS Set) (1994)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Civil War Journal is an exquisitely appropriate title for this anecdotal examination of the bloodiest conflict in American History. The series is just that; a journal, using the individual memoirs of participants as the foundation for examining various aspects of the war. Some episodes deal with personalities, some with battles, others with peripheral subject matter.
The series does not cover the entire history of the Civil War and makes no effort to do so. In fact, both boxed sets are required to come even close to a complete historical perspective. What would seem a serious weakness proves to be the set's greatest strength.
Since each episode is meant to stand on its own merits (and most succeed handsomely), the subject matter can be approached with a degree of detail and thoroughness that would be impossible if the point were to present a history of the Civil War. Diaries, journals, memoirs and reenactments are carefully interwoven to give the viewer a sense of both intimacy and immediacy. The subject matter comes alive, something that the viewer can connect with both intellectually and emotionally, rather than another dry retelling of historical data.
Because of this unusual and highly effective approach, each episode does stands well on its own. There is no loss of continuity if individual videos are viewed out of sequence, nor is there any need to hurriedly watch one tape after another so as to retain the context.
Reenactors are used liberally throughout the series. The production values are magnificent, and Danny Glover's reserved, understated narration is the crowning touch.
Civil War Journal belongs in the library of any student of American History or any Civil War enthusiast. A truly superb production.

"I know the one thing we did right, was the day we started to fight...keep your eyes on the prize, hold on my lord, hold on! " These are the lyrics to the music in the opening of each tape, in the Eyes on the Prize set. I consider this collection one of the most influential forms of film ever made. The power of the visuals, the singing, the interviews of the civil rights movement is so overwhelming throughout these videos. When I become a classroom teacher, I fully intend to use these videos to educate students about the experiences and injustice of the civil rights movement.
This documentary is one of my most prized possessions, which I value tremendously because it is an important tool in educating people about the civil rights movement in ways they cannot be educated through reading of books or articles.
It should be made mandatory in all schools to have the social studies teachers show this video. The students will definately walk away with a much different perspective on America and race relations - the perspective that offers the truth.
Who can dispute the horrible murders of Emmitt Till, Cheney Goodman & Schwerner, among countless of others? Eyes on the Prize does not cover up the graphic details of these situations, but rather shows them - close up. It'll leave images in your mind you will vividly remember for a long, long time. Then there's the era of MLKing, Jr. and the March on Washington. The Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Brown vs. Board of Education decision, and the list goes on and on.
Unquestionably a video worth purchasing and watching over and over and over. You'll learn something new each time.

Eyes on the Prize, the most comprehensive television documentary on the American civil rights movement ever produced, includes rare film footage and incisive present-day interviews to bring the events of this period to life. Two events of the mid-'50s propel the movement into the headlines: the Mississippi lynching of 14-year-old Emmett Till, and the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, inspired by Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her seat to a white man. Walk with hundreds of thousands of protesters to the triumphant 1963 March on Washington. By the mid-'60s, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. confronts the powerful political machinery of Chicago's Mayer Richard Daley. As America enters the turbulent '70s, African Americans begin celebrating their own culture.

Vietnam - The Ten Thousand Day War (1980) Review

Vietnam - The Ten Thousand Day War (1980)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned and treasured an incomplete VHS set of this marvelous series since the late 80's, and now I know where part of my tax refund is going. This fascinating documentary series from the late 70's walks a very fine line between scholarship and pure entertainment. Although the delivery is decidedly dry, representing well the less sensationalistic Cronkite-era jounalistic dignity, this very long series never ceases to inform and absorb you. Viewers who have come of age in the CNN/Oliver Stone era may have a tough time NOT being told who the villians are, but man oh man is it a blessed relief for sentient humans. Vietnam:The ten thousand day war, is as close to agenda-free as you will ever see these days. The roles and experiences of the 3 Presidential administrations, the Vietminh, and the anti-war demonstrators are studied in minute detail, never betraying for a moment any editorial slant at all. The day-long running time allows for an exhaustive look at all aspects of the conflict including several with which most of us are unfamiliar, the early stages of the conflict and the role of the French for example, spending almost 2 hours on Dien Bien Phu alone. The film spends a great deal of time following the enormous diplomatic complexities the conflict entailed, instantly making fools of all the pundits of any political stripe who nursed any number of pat, absurd "Why don't we just leave??" or "Why don't we just flatten them??" notions. The one thing I can promise the casual historian or political science major is this; you will walk away from the experience of this documentary series knowing a great deal more about the Vietnam war and era than you did before you sat down. It is, without a doubt the most scholarly and objective documentary on any subject I have ever seen, and yes, that includes Burns's The Civil War.

The real story behind the longest, most controversial war in modern history. Known as history's first "living room war," the Vietnam conflict is presented in this nearly 10-hour documentary with clarity, authority, and insight, complete on 2 DVDs. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Peter Arnett and narrated by Richard Basehart (Moby Dick, LaStrada), Vietnam: The Ten Thousand Day War covers the entire conflict, examining the shifting attitudes of the United States toward Vietnam from 1945, when the battleground was known as French Indochina, to 1975, when Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese. This superb award-winning series of programs re-examines without blame or judgment the rise and fall of America's 20-year commitment to the war in Vietnam. Forceful and evocative, with film clips shot by both sides, it revisits the time and place that molded a generation and changed the course of American politics forever.

The History Channel Presents The Civil War (1999) Review

The History Channel Presents The Civil War (1999)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An outstanding collection of the best episodes of History Channel's "Civil War Combat" and "Civil War Journal," the latter hosted and narrated by actor Danny Glover.
My only real qualms (and the reason I give this set 4 stars out of 5) is because A&E/History Channel basically recycled these previously released episodes and simply boxed them up together. That's fine and all as it's more convenient to have all of them together, BUT...if you're going to do that, why not put these episodes into anamorphic widescreen and/or remaster the video images as well? Some of these episodes look like they were transfered to DVD straight from a VHS source.
But this should not take away from the fact that these are extremely well-made histories - informative, educational and obviously produced by and with the assistance of those with a distinct passion for the Civil War.
Definitely worth your time and attention!

Civil War Journal - The Conflict Begins Review

Civil War Journal - The Conflict Begins
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The History Channel's "Civil War Journal - The Conflict Begins" is a collection of four episodes detailing some of the significant events prior to and during the early days of the American civil war.
Each episode is 43 minutes in length and is a self-contained documentary focusing on one particular subject, person, or group. Each episode provides a very nice summary of the event and/or people involved and the corresponding effect on the overall war. Although the episodes are arranged in chronological order, they can stand independently and can be watched in any order without affecting your understanding of the material.
Danny Glover lends his voice as the narrator of all four episodes and keeps the story flowing. (He really can't pronounce the word "Massachusetts," though, which is a little grating on the nerves during what was otherwise my favorite episode - the one titled "The 54th Massachusetts.") Comments are liberally provided from various historians, particularly the well-known William C. Davis, author of the recently released "An Honorable Defeat: The Last Days of the Confederate Government."
Having recently become interested in civil war history, I bought this DVD set hoping it would be a useful and quick refresher course that would provide a general background into the major events of the war. Definitely not disappointed, I constantly found myself realizing that not only was the series a good refresher, it actually was quite entertaining. The episodes are very well written, unfold with quite a bit of drama, and contain a surprising number of interesting little-known facts (at least they were new to me).
I'm looking forward to further releases of the "Civil War Journal" series and will certainly add them to my library.

This work is simply splendid. Viewing these videos in their chronological order will refresh your memory and cement your knowledge of the important events of your century. Jennings is marvelous: his voice is warm, intimate and authoritative. The writing is near poetry in places, as it weaves the events into a unified narrative. The pictures are superb in both content and technical quality. The original music score is wonderful, making the work highly dramatic and cinematic in places. A documentary commemorating a century of history should be great...and this one is. The next time someone tells you history is boring or that TV only delivers drivel to the masses, point them to this landmark work.

Victory at Sea - The Legendary World War II Documentary (History Channel) (1952)

The History Channel and NBC NEWS should be ashamed of themselves for putting out this long awaited DVD version of Victory at Sea. I watched these shows as a kid back in the 50s and waited for the DVD version. I was warned by someone that the sound wasn't great, but I bought the set anyway. Big mistake. You have to watch some of them with a remote in your hand to constantly raise and lower the sound. The narration is too low and the music is too loud. A review on another website defending the DVD set said that there is a warning on the box that says "audio levels may vary". Yeah, right, but the sites that sell the DVDs don't point that out. This was very disappointing. I can't, and won't, recommend this set to anyone.

I love this series by the History Channel. The scenery photos are beautiful. The commentary taken from the diaries of cowboys and newspapers are accurate accounts. The History Channel created a small glimpse into the history of the old west into an hour long show. They could not tell all in only hour long glimpses into history. If you want to gain an insight into the old west this is a great way to begin your journey. If you want to become an historian on the old west then you can read many books on the subject. But as a fan of the old west I love watching this series and hope to find more of this series available on DVD.

The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition) Review

The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Assuming that a filmmaker can't go on indefinately, let's say making a history of World War II in hundred or more hours of videotape, Jeremy Isaacs has done a masterful job of capturing the essense of World War II, including its causes and the Cold War that evolved out of its conclusion.
Please note, "The World At War" was produced between 1971 and 1974, which means the interviews with veterans and other war survivors were filmed close to thirty years after the conclusion of World War II.
I watched much of this series when it was first telecasted in the 1970s, and continued to view reruns of programs over the last 25+ years. I had thought that I had seen every episode two or three times, but after finishing the complete DVD collection, I'm pretty sure I completely missed some programs and saw only bits-and-pieces of others.
What a tremendous production. Beautiful reproduced on DVD, with excellent color and superb graphics (maps).
I especially appreciated the opening special, "The Making of..." with producer Jeremy Isaacs, as well as Isaacs' brief introductions to each of the 26 programs. I only wish he had prepared similar introductions to the supplementary material on Discs 4 and 5, but you can't have everything.
"The World At War" is hundred times better than the typical fare found on A&E, The History Channel, and even PBS. That's not to say that quality productions are not being made today, but Jeremy Isaacs' production is just plain better than most things regularly scheduled documentaries on cable and broadcast television.
Special mention must be made of the music by Carl Davis and the writers, who are too numerous to mention. Everyone familiar with this series knows the contribution of Sir Laurence Olivier, definitely the finest documentary narration I've ever heard.
As an American, I particularly appreciate the British perspective, which offers a different view of the breath, scope and horror of the war. The series really puts the current War on Terrorism in perspective.
The supplementary material begins with an extended interview/commentary by Traudl Junge who served as Hitler's secretary. She's a fascinating person, speaking calmly and thoughtfully about her former employer, especially the events leading up to his suicide.
There is an equally interesting interview with historian Stephen Ambrose, filmed in the early 1970s. While looking 25+ years younger, Ambrose sounds almost the same as he does today during his numerous C-Span and PBS appearances.
The most fascinating of the eight hours of supplementary material are the programs dealing with the Death of Adolf Hitler and the extended two part examination of the Final Solution.
Thank you, Amazon, for making this wonderful documentary so accessible.
For those of you contemplating this major expediture, you won't regret purchasing this landmark visual/aural history of World War II.
And remember, this DVD collection will be available for your children and grandchildren.

More than 30 years after its initial broadcast, THE WORLD AT WAR remains the definitive visual history of World War II. Narrated by Academy Award winner Laurence Olivier and digitally re-mastered for DVD, this is epic history at its absolute best.
Unsurpassed in depth and scope, its 26 hour-long programs feature an extraordinary collection of newsreel, propaganda, and home-movie footage drawn from the archives of 18 nations, including color close-ups of Adolf Hitler taken by his mistress, that present an unvarnished perspective of the war's pivotal events. Penetrating interviews with eyewitness participants--from Hitler's secretary to Alger Hiss to ordinary citizens who stood outside the battle lines--add spine-tingling, first-hand accounts to an already unforgettable viewing experience.
Informative and unbiased, THE WORLD AT WAR is the recipient of numerous accolades, including an International Emmy Award, The National Television Critic's Award for Best Documentary, and knighthood for its creator, Sir Jeremy Isaacs.

The First World War - The Complete Series (2005) Review

The First World War - The Complete Series (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This series is to the First World War what the classic World at War series was to the Second World War. It is shorter but excellent nonetheless.
Although the First World War gets less attention than its successor, it was really the watershed event of the 20th century. This conflict shaped the world that came after to this day. It was the catalyst for the rise of soviet communism in Russia, whose unravelling less than a decade and a half ago continues to affect worldwide diplomacy and economics. Germany's defeat provided the opportunity for fascism and Hitler to come to power there, causing the Second World War and its greater destruction. The defeat of the Ottoman Empire during the First World War and the diplomatic and political morass that followed was the precursor for the reconstitution of Israel and eventually brought the Middle East into center stage today.
This series is based upon the books and encyclopedic knowledge of Professor Hugh Strachan. It examines every aspect of the war, from its causes to the conduct of the war on and behind the front lines to its aftermath. In doing so, it covers the diplomatic, political, military and social aspects, each of which played a role in shaping what happened and why. It does not just present the summary facts but goes in depth in its explanations. For example, instead of simply depicting the spring 1918 German offensive on the western front, it gives detail about how they accomplished it, the attitudes of the troops on each side and the thought processes of the respective high commands.
Not having seen Kenneth Branagh's World War 1 in Color, this reviewer is incompetant to compare the two. However, because this series is thorough and draws upon the professor who may well be THE authority on this era of history, it is likely the best presentation on the subject available today.

New York (7 Episode PBS Boxed Set) (1999) Review

New York (7 Episode PBS Boxed Set) (1999)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Burns family has come up with some fine work, from Baseball, to the Civil War; and now the latest, New York. A fine successor.
Ric Burns explores the early history of New York, starting with the God-created attributes of the region and one of the world's finest natural seaports. But the treasure is found in what man has added to the Apple, starting with the Erie Canal, Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Subway system. The Bridge's history has itself been the subject of much scholarship, and Burns does it well also. The creation of the skyline, including the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building are some of the series best moments, filled with some of the fascinating type of information that fans of Burns' documentaries have come to expect and enjoy.
The history of New York is the history of immigrants, and the interaction of Irish, Italians, Africans and other groups is splendidly examined. The politics of the City, such as the rise and demise of Al Smith and Jimmy Walker are well explored also.
My few complaints are minor, and don't detract from the work. F. Scott Fitzgerald seems to have become a demi-god to Burns, and after awhile, I found the continued references to him and his
work tiring. More than a few minutes on the early history of Harlem would have been a welcome replacement.
I purchased the DVD version, although I had the videocassettes. Am I glad I did! It has two additional discs, which try to bring the series up to date. Fiorello LaGuardia and Robert Moses, the two most pivotal figures in the history of the City, are splendidly explored. More examination of the development and contribution of Harlem (which I lamented in the review of the VHS version) is also welcomed. New York's post W.W. II predominance as the true center of the Earth is made plain. As the series progresses, we see the value of the City (any city), the destruction of the great and old in the name of urban renewal, and the slow cancer of suburban sprawl.
Even those not from New York will find it to be a rich, interesting history, worth of the length of time one must devote to its viewing. The rest of the world will understand some of why New Yorkers love their home as they do. Those expatriate New Yorkers will be tugged to head back home. All in all, brilliant, brilliant work.

The Civil War: Episode One - The Cause - 1861 (1990) Review

The Civil War: Episode One - The Cause - 1861 (1990)

I was first introduced to this documentary in a US History class. All too often history is portrayed in such a way as to be completely alien or so far out of touch with "today" that a search for relevancy proves futile. Not so with this documentary! The combination of David McCullough's voice, the background music native to the time, hundreds and hundreds of actual pictures taken on scene, and compelling stories that ranged from the strategic "macro" level of the war to the level of the individual soldier and their family absolutely captivated me! A MUST HAVE for all interested in the history of the Civil War.

The History Channel Presents The Presidents (2005) Review

The History Channel Presents The Presidents (2005)
Average Reviews:

The History Channel re-aired this series recently in a marathon one Saturday. I was at work, and it was a slow day, and we happened to turn on the TV when the programs were up to about Abraham Lincoln, in the early afternoon. For the remainder of the day, besides a few minutes here and there of having to take phone calls, my co-worker and I were absolutely glued to the TV. When 4:00 came around, I got home as quick as I could, and my fiancee and I saw and watched at least another hour of the program together.
Of course, the programs are not as in-depth as some of the more serious history buffs might have hoped for, but they were great for providing not only a general overview of each President's administration, but also for giving you a sense of the feel of the times in which each President lived; plus there was plenty of misc. trivia along the way - "useless information", as I like to call it - and I loved that, as well, because it's just interesting stuff that you would never hear in a history class.
My fiancee and I intend to buy this program and show it to our kids one day, because it seemed very much to us like something that would be good for them, and we plan to put a lot of work into their education.
In short, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND this series.

Legend of White Fang-Complete Series Review

Legend of White Fang-Complete Series

YES this IS a cartoon version of Jack London's Whitefang.
The names are the same but the situations are..... not.
Whitefang remains in the north instead of going to California with Wheaten Scott.
Wheaten Scott has a daughter(and no other family as opposed to the large household he had in the book) and Whitefang is a big arctic wolf(dog) who pals around with Wheatens daughter, Wendy, as opposed to paling around with Wheaten. Whitefang and Wendy share many Yukon adventures. many of them absurd, outlandish, unrealistic, just plain silly..... BUT for a child, it's heaven.
I LOVED this show when i was a kid. I didnt have cable tv, let alone HBO, but my friend did. the highlight of every morning was getting to her house early in the morning so we could tune in to the next adventure before catching the bus. Imagine that..... a fifth grader who can wait to jump out of bed and catch the bus!*boy were our parents fooled!!* I was head over heels in love with the world of Jack London and his stories of the Yukon. I loved the wolves, the sled dogs, the wildness of the land, the HISTORY.... i guess i was a very strange kid. but none the less i aced my history classes and excelled in reading!
I have waited YEARS to finally get my hands on this! I recently bought this collection mainly for my own nostalgic peace of mind, but it turns out my two sons (4 and 5 yrs old) both love it too! That just makes it all the more enjoyable because i dont have to listen to them whine and complain when i watch it - as opposed to when i tried to watch some other movie that wasnt on their level.
My ONLY complaint, and its not even worth removing a star for, is the packaging..... i absolutely HATE that each DVD is in a paper sleeve inside a thick box. again... i have small children who dont know they are small.... they want to do things for themselves and these sleeves can tear easily or become lost, OR thrown away by accident. But thats easily remedied. i keep the set on the top shelf and out of their reach...
I Say Give it a try... buy the used copy if you're worried you wont like it.
Granted, it IS cheap animation..... but if you have a kid who likes wolves, sled dogs, history, and Jack London(or if YOU like all those things) then its worth it to add it to the collection.
And if you're just totally cowardly about it.... rent it from netflix first. Yep. they have the DVD's too, which was what tipped me off in the first place. i almost rented them when i decided to see if Amazon had them instead.
No regrets!
*slight warning to parents*
This is a historal accounting, and while much of it is pretty far fetched, you may want to be aware that a lot of the topics deal with dog fighting, attempted murder, stealing, gun violence, arson, violence in general(one scene where a big burly claim jumper chases Wendy with an ax if i'm not mistaken) and animal trapping.
Fair warning if any of that bothers you. Watch it for yourself before you make a final judgment whether or not your children should see it.
I cant say anything about the bonus episodes because i havent watched those yet. when/if i do, i'll update this review.
