(More customer reviews)Back in the day, when Cartoon Network was in their prime, they had a killer lineup every Friday night. This included Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Cow and Chicken, Johnny Bravo, and my personal favorite, a show about a cowardly dog named Courage. I was hooked from the first episode I ever watched, which featured the little black duckling. This show had it all. Great stories were first and foremost. They were like mini-films. The stories were ridiculous, but it didn't matter because they were treated in such an epic way. The animation was great, and the backgrounds were out of this world. As much as I liked Dexter and Powerpuff Girls, their backgrounds were VERY simplistic. It was refreshing to see the style used for Courage, where the backgrounds displayed so much detail and atmosphere, which drew you in to the story all the more. As for Courage himself, true, he was a coward, but in each episode, he had to find a way to put that all aside to save his owners, Muriel and Eustace. Courage was the kind of hero you could relate to. He didn't wanna be the hero, and if you had to go up against some of the crazy stuff he did, you wouldn't wanna be either. But there was something about the dog's anxious disposition and terrified personality that made him a likeable character. He didn't talk much, but what he said mattered. "I know I'm not gonna like this" was his battle cry when it came time for action. Then he would pull out some off-the-wall prop or devise some master plan to save the day, and things would go back to normal again, except for the fact that most of the time, the family house was destroyed by the end of the episode.
This is one of the best cartoon series ever made. It's timeless and truly fun to watch. I'm ordering a copy, and so should everyone else who enjoys good storytelling.
P.S.- It's too bad all the negative reviews for a DIFFERENT DVD release are showing up here. Those are for the Australian release, not this one.

The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat (1995) Review

(More customer reviews)no one likes to take chances on new things and unfortunately for this cartoon, it only ran for i think 2 years. this dvd is a nice look back at it, with some of the best episodes. its very nicely animated, a 30's 40's look animation with a nice soundtrack put in by the Club Foot Orchestra. The music is very retro and cool, very much like the cartoons of the 30's and 40's had in thier days. Yes, these are new cartoons made in the 1990's but they look so cool in the old style animation type drawings. Very surreal, i mean extremely surreal cartoons. they are extremely enjoyable. I wish they would have released the whole first season on dvd, and released a soundtrack cd. Youll like these felix cartoons if youre a fan, or just admire the early type of animation which i still think is the best.

(More customer reviews)Fractured Fairy Tales are not only fantastic classic toons, but they're also great for use in a high school english classroom to illustrate narrative elements! Pair it with the companion book (Fractured Fairy Tales, A.J. Jacobs) with 25 tales for even more fun. I just purchased this disc from Amazon and have enjoyed rewatching these great shorts from my childhood. I couldn't find a list of the included episodes anywhere before purchasing, so here's the rundown in case you're wondering too! The disk includes these 15 episodes:

Fractured Flickers - The Complete Collection (1963) Review

(More customer reviews)I am a Jay Ward fan, and I've collected some episodes of "Fractured Flickers" on 16mm film at a cost of several hundred dollars. Films from this series are a serious collector's item, and they've never sold for cheap on eBay. As such, $35 for this DVD collection is an incredible bargain
And the show is an absolute scream! Hans Conried shines as the stoic, but not unflappable host. In one show, Conried sardonically compares his hosting duties on a silent film show to "doing a show live from Forest Lawn cemetary." The best skits include "Dinky Dunston, Boy Cheerleader" (Lon Chaney's Hunchback of Notre Dame is endowed with Dudley Do-Right's voice) and a terrific re-editing of Fritz Lang's "M" (Peter Lorre tries to give up smoking. It's topical treatment of the Big Tobacco industry was decades ahead of its time.)
If you're tired of sitcom mediocrity full of brainless idiocy, phony families, hackneyed plots and stupid pratfalls, you DESERVE this series on DVD!!! There has been no series like "Fractured Flickers" before or since!

Kimba, The White Lion, Volume 1-4 from Cartoon Classics (Set of 4) Review

(More customer reviews)Kimba the White Lion is such a great show, it's a real shame it has not been treated well on DVD. There are several things that need to be explained about these "Cartoon Classics" DVDs.
First, longtime fans of Kimba will be surprised that these episodes sound totally different than what they remember. These episodes do NOT have the original English soundtrack, made in 1966 with Billie Lou Watt as Kimba. These episodes have an English soundtrack made in 1993 with Yvonne Murray as Kimba. To be fair, though, it is this newer version that has been on TV worldwide over the last decade, and is on TV here in the US right now. Newer Kimba fans will likely want this version. (This is the same version of Kimba that was released on VHS some years back as "Kimba The Lion Prince". The full set of 4 DVDs has four episodes that were not on VHS, however.)
Are these episodes uncut? Well, yes and no. Each episode was shortened by at least 3 minutes by the producers of this 1993 version. These DVDs contain as much as is available for each episode, but if you have the feeling that something was cut out, you're right, and the missing material simply does not exist in this version of Kimba.
Now, the reason for the low star rating: These episodes have been transferred to DVD very poorly. There is no reason for this, since the 1993 masters were made on videotape from very beautiful Japanese originals. The picture on these DVDs is often "blown out", meaning that light-colored areas are too bright, and all detail is lost in them. Considering the coloration of the title character, this is a major problem.
Something not mentioned on Amazon's page is that all episodes can be played in either English or Spanish.
Kimba The White Lion is one of the greatest animated shows of all time. If you want the current version that's on TV, this is the only way to get it right now. Just be warned that the picture isn't going to be very good.

Audio levels are however some of the highest you'll find, which makes these ideal for laptop PC or portable disc player watching.The eight PD cartoons listed on the back of DIGIVIEW'S ROCKY & BULLWINKLE VOL. 1 are not part of this collection's content.
What you DO get is three intact half-hour Bullwinkle shows, consisting of the first six episodes of the "Buried Treasure" serial, plus all other cartoons and bumpers that were sandwiched in-between these bookending chapters.PROGRAM--

Gigantor - Boxed Set 1 (Episodes 1-26) Review

(More customer reviews)After the success of Astro Boy in both Japan and the United States, a new anime series was born. It's name was Tetsujin 28 or Iron Man 28. In 1965, it came to the states under the name Gigantor. Now, for the first time in 37 years, you can re-live the experience that drew a crowd of many children.
Despite the age of the material, Gigantor is quite amazing. At first, it sounds pretty simple. A 12-year-old boy named Jimmy Sparks pilot pilots a giant robot to help catch the bad guys. However, each episode has enough plot twists and action to keep any viewer glued to the screen. Following Jimmy Sparks on his adventures are other characters with odd names including Bob Brilliant, Inspector Blooper and Dick Strong. Even the villains have odd names like Cats Meow and Swami Tommy.
Keep in mind that this show was distributed before TV stations started having censorship laws so don't be surprised when you see someone smoking a cigarette. Also, there is one episode where Jimmy Sparks helps a bunch of cowboys by shooting at some indians so you might be offended by some of the racism in these episodes. My only problem with this show is the music. It sounds good, but do they always have to put the same melody into each song?
The extras (yes, there are extras) are on discs 1 and 4. The first disc features commentary by the original English director, Fred Lad, on episodes 3-5 which feature the villain The Spider. Lad mostly talks about how four voice actors did all these voices, but he does make some comments on how he Americanized it and why some changes were made. The extras on disc four include a lengthy interview with Fred Lad, an interview with an old anime historian (I don't know why they included this) and a biography on the original Japanese creator. I enjoyed the interview with Fred Lad since he has done lots of research on Tetsujin 28 including the sequels to it, but the anime historian interview feels like stating the obvious to all anime fans.
Overall, I enjoyed Gigantor and I think anyone can appreciate it, regardless of the fact that it is in black and white. Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)This is the one that fans of Kimba the White Lion have been waiting for! It contains the original theme music and voices from the 1965 version! The video releases of some Kimba episodes in the 1990s were disappointing, containing a new, somewhat boring theme tune, and different character voices. This box set is superb - all 52 episodes are fully restored, complete with the original soundtrack, and the discs are beautifully presented. It brought back wonderful memories, and the new generation just love the stories!

150 Cartoon Classics Review

(More customer reviews)For the price you really can't complain too much. There are about 2/3 of the set that I rate as good cartoons that I'd watch again. Obviously some real clunkers, like THREE STOOGES, the HOFFNUNG & the MR PIPER ones which don't appeal to me liking the bizarre 1930s ones, fortunately there are lots of those on here! Many are typical public domain quality, the worst one is the wonderful COBWEB HOTEL Fleisher Toon which is rough at the start. Some have extra noise too from worn films. 5 stars for 2/3 being good toons & the price.
There are loads of Popeye (23 of them, almost all the post Fleischer ones), just one Casper & Woody Woodpecker, which may disappoint, but the Woody one is a great early 40s one.
BEWARE buying this set if you own the 100 Cartoon collection (with the dog pen drawing on the front) and the 101 Set (from Australia) as these duplicate most of this set. The 101 set copies 75% of this set in the same order!
