The Color Honeymooners - Collection 1 (1966) Review

The Color Honeymooners - Collection 1 (1966)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Yes,MPI has finally started its' release of the Jackie Gleason Show. This set gleans its' material from the 1966-70 series which was filmed in colour. It contains the "Trip To Europe" series first done back in the late 50s.It's an updated and I think just as good version as its' black and white counterpart.
This was the first(Gleason) show series to be shot in colour and Gleason certainly makes effective use of the medium as is evidenced by the myriad of coulourful costumes worn by both cast and crew.
Now before I go any further I think for the sake of those that have read the above "review" by Mr.Gaita I should clarify two essential points.
Firstly is that this set is a three disc set, with nine episodes.
Secondly these are NOT hour long sketches nor are the entire shows one sees here an hour long.Indeed no Honeymooners sketch in any Gleason show(excluding specials of course) were ever one hour in length. The running time of these shows range anywhere from 46-49 minutes...in total.
What has happened is,for whatever reason,MPI has CUT Gleasons' entire opening monologue sequence. What we get is everything AFTER that,i.e. the Honeymooners sketch and,if time permitted because sometimes it didn't,Gleasons' closing words, thank you to the audience and introduction of the cast. The cutting of the opening is certainly not a make or break situation but it is VERY disappointing and the big reason I gave this set a star less than it should get.
With that aside let's get back to the review.I must say that I never saw any of Gleasons shows in colour because I simply didn't own a colour set until years later.Only the more financially well to do in my neighbourhood had colour sets and those I did see sported this terrible reddish-greenish blury picture.I was quite happy to stick with my B&W.
MPI has done a pretty good job in presenting these shows but not a great one.The clarity is fine but the film just shows its' age much more than it should and I think a better job could have been done to bring it up to the standard of other shows from that same time.
As far as Gleason,Carney,Kean and McCrae are concerned I just can't say enough about them. The two principles are right on top of their form the entire way through.Their chemistry is immediately apparent and they know their characters inside and out and the fun they have with each other spills out to us(and the live audience then).Kean and McCrae of course are no slouches in their departments considering the big shoes they had to fill.Remember the so called Classic 39 were still on TV at this time and everyone who watched THIS show were intimately familiar with that one. There were unfair comparisons then and there are now with their counterparts Meadows and Randolph. In my oppinion there is and never was any comparison at all.No one could take Meadows and Randolphs' places and both Kean and McCrae knew this from the get go.So they did THEIR thing not imitations, which would have fallen as flat as a pancake had they attempted to do so.Therefore the new dynamic they brought to their parts blended nicely with Gleason and Carneys roles. This oppinion has never been a popular one with hardcore fans of the Honeymooners, but it's one I've never waivered from since those years when I first saw them.
I must also give a special mention to the June Taylor dancers.I had forgotten but seeing these talented people again after almost 40 years is a pleasure in itself. They were a hard working bunch of hoofers to be sure and I invite viewers to pay special attention to the dancing in the Irish segment of this series. The footwork would make even Michael Flatley jealous I'm sure!
This is Vol#1 of what I hope will be a total release of all the Honeymooners sketches from this show of this period.I believe there are somewhere around 33 sketches left to be released,if this is MPIs' plans that is.Remember also that NOT every Jackie Gleason show had a Honeymooners sketch.Like Jackies' early 50s shows the sketches done on this particular series could be of various lengths also,if as I say there was one done at all.
Lastly I should mention that this series(The Trip to Europe) has been the only one previously syndicated and released on TV.On TV it also included a sketch called "King of the Castle".This had them back home and some events that happen after the trip.MPI must have thought this particluar segment didn't warrant inclusion because it wasn't technically part of the "trip",so I'm sure it will be released on a future set.
In conclusion I would certainly recommend this set to any Honeymooners fan and having said that this set should not be relegated just to "die -hard" fans of the show,as the editorial "review" states.Nothing could be further from the truth. These shows are light, true to the Honeymooner format and an experience the whole family can enjoy. And come to think of it that's exactly who were watching and enjoying them back in 1966!
It also states that these sketches "are weighed down" by the musical numbers. This is also,in my oppinion, total bunk. The numbers compliment and sometimes enhance the sequences. It is absolutely precious to see both Carney and Gleason arm in arm singing their hearts out before us.And their small "dance" routines together have to be seen. It's a beautiful thing!
The work MPI has done on them certainly could have been better and their cutting of Gleasons' entire opening sequence is a travesty but as I stated earlier not a deal breaker.
This is a set that belongs in everyones' DVD collection!

The Color Honeymooners (a/k/a The Jackie Gleason Show), a top-rated comedy/variety program aired, "from the sun and fun capital of the world – Miami Beach!" on Saturday night from 1966-70 on CBS-TV. This long-running series marked the final weekly TV show for "The Great One."Reprising their famous characters from The Honeymooners, the cast was led by Jackie Gleason (Ralph Kramden) and Art Carney (Ed Norton). Newcomers Sheila MacRae and Jane Kean played long-suffering wives Alice and Trixie. Like popular variety series of the time, the show's format was a clever combination of new comedy sketches coupled with classic Honeymooners bits. Plenty of big name guest stars and a generous helping of singing and dancing rounded out the hour. Regulars included Gleason's glamorous Glea-Girls; the June Taylor Dancers; Sammy Spear and His Orchestra, and announcer, Johnny Olson. This 4-disc boxed set includes 10 episodes and bonus features: In 25 Words or Less, Ship of Fools, Poor People of Paris, Confusion, Italian Style, Curse of the Kramdens, The Mod Couple, You're in the Picture, We Spy, Petticoat Jungle, Mexican Hat Trick

The Honeymooners Classic 39 Collection (1955)

I'm sure that anyone spending the time reading reviews of this Honeymooners Box Set, doesn't need any reassurance as to the show itself. What more needs to be said about Ralph and the gang? The great 39 episodes never fail to deliver. The Honeymooners remain the prime example of television comedy at it's zenith. The show, while serving as a wonderful time capsule of it's era, is astoundingly fresh, having aged beautifully. *********About the Box Set************As I read other reviews here I realize that there is some confusion regarding this set. It almost makes me believe that there is another box set floating around. Anyway, the one I am referring to was just released November 2003...(not sure why even Amazon has it listed as 2000).I see that others are complaining that the shows are not chronologically placed on the discs, but grouped thematically. While that would be a little annoying to me as well, such is NOT the case with the set I purchased...all are in the order that they were originally aired with the airdates given. Another complaint that I've seen posted is in regards to the quality of the transfers themselves. Once again, I can't imagine that these reviewers are seeing the same Box Set as I am. I am a rather picky viewer and try to stay informed...I've never seen the show look or sound better. Glorious Black and White. (I will attest to the fact that the episode "TV or Not TV" does not look or sound as good as the rest, probably inherant in the source material...not a biggie though). As far as extras...not much here. The Anniversary special included here is a shortened version and isn't all that informative or even necessary for that matter. Yes, it would have been nice to have more extras...interviews, commentary, bio's, etc..., but for the price of this set, you are getting the gold, which is the show itself. I think CBS/Paramount realized that people are becoming wary of large, expensive box sets, and aren't purchasing them.Case in point...Fox went all out in their release of Mary Tyler Moore Season One. Great packaging, loaded with extras, great transfers. Now they are claiming that it didn't sell enough to warrant their releasing of any further seasons. So fans are left hanging with a great Box Set of Season One...with no more to come. Ridiculous! ( Fans of that show have started a petition...if interested go to mtmshow.com)******All in all, since the Honeymooners only had one season filmed, it could have been released with more extras, but with a show of this caliber it certainly stands on it's own merit. For under $40, to have the complete Honeymooners crisp on clear on DVD...how can you complain?

The Honeymooners Hidden Episodes Vol. 3: Christmas Party; Forgot to Register (1955) Review

The Honeymooners Hidden Episodes Vol. 3: Christmas Party; Forgot to Register (1955)
Average Reviews:

Even though the Christmas episode isn't much on plot, this is one of just a very few places where you can see the characters of Jackie Gleason besides the ever so famous Ralph Kramden. alph leaves the apartment to run to the store for Alice, and when he's gone, Gleason appears as Reggie Van Gleason, The Poor Soul, Joe the Bartended, Rudy the Repairman. I rate this 5 stars more for the historical value of the show than for anything else. This isn't recommended for the common fan of the show, but I would recommend this to anyone who wants to check out the characters of Jackie Gleason beyond those of the Kramdens and Nortons.
I do feel that, as a reply to the previous reviewer, time has shown that these shows have held up well. Maybe time hasn't been as kind to some episodes as others, but it is a testiment and a tribute to this series and that of Jackie Gleason for producing such a fine product that, almost 50 years later, videos, DVDs, and reruns of this show are still on the air. I think it's great for me, who's 22 years old, to see this show on the air now, and be able to share these shows with someone as special to me as my father, who taught me to laugh and love these classic gems. And it makes me happy to be alive now, while the show is probably more popular now than it was when it originally aired.

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes Review

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes

I now have both collections -- the classic 39 and the "lost episodes", and thank God for whoever it was who decided to put the whole shebang on tape. The "bang, zoom", "Baby, you're the greatest", "Hey, Ralphie booooy", and "You're a sweet kid" won't ever get old. The only slight fly in the ointment as far as I'm concerned is Joyce Randolph's overacting, but that's a minor fly indeed -- the two collections are more than well worth the $ they cost, because there has never been another "Honeymooners", and there will never be another either. It's a classic no matter how you cut it!

The Very Best of the Honeymooners (1955) Review

The Very Best of the Honeymooners (1955)
Average Reviews:

When I first got my DVD, I knew I just had to have this! I've been a fan of "The Honeymooners" for as long as I can remember (I'm currently 22) and I knew I would enjoy this DVD very much! And I really do. It's something that a fan of Jackie Gleason and "The Honeymooners" should have in their collection. My problem with the DVD lies in the fact that two of the programs on here, "Funniest Moments Vol. 1 and Vol. 2" have already been released on video, and infact are in my video collection. These are nice programs to see if you're interested in not just "Honeymooners" clips, but also clips of Reggie Van Gleason, Joe the Bartender, and other classic Jackie Gleason characters. The third program is one that I had not seen before, "The Wit and Wisdom of Ed Norton," which is a salute to our favorite sewer worker. Again, a very nice program with some pretty good clips. The final program is "Letter To The Boss," which is an entire "Honeymooners" skit from November 14, 1953. This is one of the first "long" skits featuring these characters, and while this is a nice one to feature, there probably are better skits to use. However, the quality is nice and clear (for a kinescope) but why just present the skit? Would it have hurt MPI to release the entire "Jackie Gleason Show" from that week with the June Taylor Dancers and Gleason's monologue included, as well as credits and commercials? That would have made this an automatic 5 stars! I think this is worth having, but like my title says, a good start to introducing a classic to the digital age.
Before I close, I would just like to mention that there are several "still lost" episodes in the vaults. These include the original "Honeymooners Trip To Europe" shows performed live in 1957, and the performed again in 1966 from Miami. These 1957 shows feature Audrey Meadows and Joyce Randolph (while the laters would have Sheila MacRae and Jane Kean) and these have not been seen since their original airing in 1957. If MPI wants to release a really great, valuable DVD set, then let's suggest releasing these lost gems!

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes, Vol. 4 (1953) Review

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes, Vol. 4 (1953)
Average Reviews:

Recommended confidently to Honemooners fans. If you're not a Honeymooners fan, first pick up "the Classic 39" for about $30 and it'll provide years of entertainment. If you're hungry for more, these lost episodes are a good way to get more fun. Some sets are very expensive because they have been out of print for a few years I guess.
This set, Box-4, was quite affordable and therefore I thought it might turn out to be a dud. However, after 2 viewings, my family and I have warmed-up to them and I must say it is classic in its own right. To my surprise Alice IS actually meaner than Ralph in the beginning of the episode "Jellybeans"! She derates Ralph visciously and calls him STUPID without any provocation! This particular episode is from 1952 and is one of the earliest Honeymooners episodes, with characters that are still developing into those that we've come to know/love in the "classic 39". Regardless, it's still quite entertaining. There is quite a range of vintage on this set (Boxed set 4) from 1952 to 1956.
There are a couple of weaker episodes such as "Pickles", "Alice Plays Cupid" (Jan '53)(In which Alice AND Ralph are rather mean spirited to a girl simply because she's a little overweight!)
"The Hypnotist" is probably the best one here in which Ralph uses a hypnotist friend to get Alice to surrender the family funds for Ralph's Racoon Lodge convention trip. Absolutely hysterical and on-par with the best of the classic-39!
"The Check-Up" opens with Gleason coming out on-stage with fly undone (seemingly unscripted) and a few minutes later zips it up while his back is to the audience. The audience knows exactly what's going on during the zip-up and begins to crack-up big-time....then Gleason cracks-up too. The 1st time I watched this, I didn't know why the audience and he were laughing so hard.
As others have noted the video quality is not perfect due to the fact these were all Kinescopes (is that the term?) but this does not detract from the fun...as a matter of fact I think it makes me appreciate the nostalgia aspect of it even more.
Sure there are a few less than classic episodes here, but all in all, great entertainment.

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes, Boxed Set 3 (1988)

I'm a big HMer fan and consider the work between these four actors funny, touching and timeless. If you don't like certain episodes, fine; To each his own. I do have to scratch my head about those reviewers who take exception to the picture quality; That the DVD should be clearer than the original VHS releases. Are they aware that the "Lost Episodes"
are "Kinescopes" and not "Film" like the "Classic 39". Up until 1957 most TV sitcoms and all variety shows were broadcast live with no means to record the transmission. (Networks wouldn't film most shows due to the expense involved.(Multiple cameras, editing, developing etc.) "Lucy" was an exception. ) Standard practice was to use a single "Film" camera focused on a studio moniter during the actual performance. This would then be quickly developed and shown several hours later for the west coast. These resulting "Moniter films" are "Kinescopes "and they are no where near as clear as film, the images look crammed into the screen since the film camera was slightly "zoomed in" so as not to get the edges of the live moniter. In '57 video tape was introduced and shows that weren't filmed were at least preserved for posterity on videotape. I doubt any modern technology could undo the qualities of a Kinescope. These are treasures from the early TV age. I personally wouldn't be so picky about the picture quality. These shows are what they are; Great comedy thankfully preserved in a primitive medium. Think of all the shows that weren't Kinescoped. They were seen once and were gone, lost in the ethos of time and space! Anyway, I'll take Kinescoped Honeymooners over any number of digitally recorded reality shows today.

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes, Boxed Set 1 (1984) Review

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes, Boxed Set 1 (1984)

OK: the bad news first. This is a fairly uneven collection of "Lost Honeymooners" episodes. The transfers are of wildly varying quality; some are quite watchable, while others are extremely grainy or not taken from the proverbial "best available sources." The 4-disc set comes in a clunky box which easily could have been half the size. The extras are OK; some are actual episodes, while others are compilations of scenes (some taken from shows elsewhere in this set) that merely serve to pad the running time.
But when all is said and done, it's still "The Honeymooners" - which means it's very funny indeed. The classic cast is here (Gleason, Carney, Meadows, Randolph) and for the most part in top form, although some of the episodes are not as well rehearsed as others. The highlight of the set is the "New Year's Eve" episode, a 40-minute extravaganza featuring cameos by Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. Another treat is the Christmas show, although it's a bit disconcerting to see Jackie Gleason playing his other characters (including Reginald Van Gleason and Fenwick Babbitt) in a "Honeymooners" episode.
If you're looking to start your "Honeymooners" DVD collection, the now-available "Classic 39" set is obviously the place to start. But if you're a huge Honeymooners fan (as I am) and can't get enough of their good, clean, raucous brand of humour, you will definitely want to own this collection as well.

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes, Vol. 1 (1955)
Average Reviews:

I was anticipating MPI's first DVD release of the Honeymooners with much trepidation, having suffered through their completely botched releases of the lost episodes on VHS. And to no one's surprise, their first DVD release is just as bad.
Instead of taking the time and effort to do a quality box set of say, 20 hours of lost episodes, which is now the preferred way to release television series on DVD, a la the X-Files, MPI apparently is going to release these episodes in drips and drabs. The whole point of DVD is the ability to put 3 - 4 hours of material on one disc, not the 90 - 120 minutes that MPI is doing with these classic episodes. And what is the meaning of the so-called "Bonus Episode" on the disc?? Are we to believe that MPI is actually giving us something? The menus are completely confusing, and the video quality is no better than the VHS releases were.
It will also be interesting to see if they will repeat their horrible mistake of the VHS releases by putting the Baseball Manager episode on two different discs, as they did with the VHS releases, instead of releasing the alternate version of the same episode, which is what they claimed they did on the VHS.
Unfortunately, since MPI has exclusive rights to the Honeymooners, these problems will never be corrected. And MPI has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are to DVD what Goodtimes Video was to VHS.

These shows always bring me up when I'm feeling down. These DVD boxed sets have bonuses and various bits that you won't find elsewhere. I do not recall the VHS tape versions of these having the extras, nor were they as easy to navigate thru, as they are on these DVD's.Included are Honeymooners BLOOPERS and a HISTORY OF THE LOST EPISODES. Very nice packaging and artwork in an extremely durable 4 DVD case. "Ralph's diet, and Holloween Party are drop dead funny! I agree with one of the other reviews for volume #1, The quality is very good & exactly as I remember them when they aired in re-runs. The camera techniques used in these shows were not of todays digital quality, but again, they are good as the finest copy that you'll find anywhere.

Digitally restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive
Deluxe 42 page booklet with full HONEYMOONERS history and rare photos, compiled by Honeymooners expert Robert Bader.
One of television's most influential and beloved comedy programs, THE HONEYMOONERS first appeared in 1951 as a series of skits on television's "Cavalcade of Stars" before comic great Jackie Gleason was given his own program a year later. From 1952-1955 and 1956-1957, "The Jackie Gleason Show" featured dozens of classic HONEYMOONERS productions broadcast live nationwide on CBS-TV, airing only once. For decades, these early HONEYMOONERS telecasts were lost until Jackie Gleason began releasing them from his private film vault.
Now, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the very first HONEYMOONERS skits, MPI Home Video and Jackie Gleason Enterprises present the most complete collection possible of these rare gems, many of which have not been seen anywhere in 50 years or available previously on DVD.
