The Three Stooges Review

The Three Stooges
Average Reviews:

I went into buying this eight DVD box set believing that there would be at least a few classic "Stooges" shorts. Instead, I receive only ONE DVD of shorts, the rest of the set being comprised of various clips, biographies, and rare footage of the Howard brothers. I'm all for learning a bit about our classic comedy heritage here, but my main complaint is that the clips on each DVD borrow greatly from each other (you'll find yourself watching one DVD, realizing you've seen these clips on the LAST DVD!), the clips are poorly edited together, and there are far too many annoying "Pop-up Video"-esque factoids that are indeed informative, but get in the way of enjoying the Stooges' comedy.
If you're interested in learning about the team here, read a biography. If you want to actually WATCH the Stooges, try a different box set.

The Long, Long Trailer (1954) Review

The Long, Long Trailer (1954)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Directed by Vincent Minelli, this comedy, starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez, was filmed at the height of the popularity of their television show, "I Love Lucy". In this film, Lucy was never funnier, and Desi was never better as her comedic foil.
The plot is surprisingly simple. Tacy Collins (Lucille Ball) and Nicholas Carlos Collini (Desi Arnez) are about to be married. Tacy persuades him that having a trailer home would be ideal, since he has the type of job that takes him away so often. This way, she could always be there to take care of him no matter where he is working, as their home would always go with him, wherever he may be. Nicky buys into her logic, and the rest is history.
They purchase a top of the line trailer home, a new car to tow it, and get married. Tacy and Nicky then hit the road and have a number of very funny adventures. They will have you belly laughing, as the personas of their film characters do not differ greatly from that of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, the characters of their television show. If it ain't broke, why fix it?
Keenan Wynn has a small role as a traffic control cop whose path briefly crosses theirs. Don't blink, or you may miss him. Some of the footage is shot in gorgeous Yosemite National Park and the cinematography is a treat, with beautiful scenic vistas replete with mountain views.
Not only was this film a hit for MGM in 1954 and the best grossing comedy of the year, but it was also their best grossing comedy to date, beating MGM's previous record holder, "Father of the Bride". If you are a fan of Lucy and Desi, or if you simply want a film that would be fun for the whole family, you cannot go wrong in choosing this one.

Laurel and Hardy Classic Shorts (Volume 1) Review

Laurel and Hardy Classic Shorts (Volume 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Laurel and Hardy's best films were made at the Hal-Roach-Studios in the 1930's, because Stan Laurel wrote the scripts, directed the films, and Laurel & Hardy ad-libbed, created the comedy beyond the script as the cameras were rolling (50% was ad-libbed). This 10-volume set of talking-shorts (20-minute-films) is from the Hal-Roach-Studios. When L&H went to MGM, the big corporation, in the 1940's; other-people wrote the scripts, other-people directed, and L&H were not allowed to ad-lib.
L&H feature-films, their earliest full-length-talking-films (1-hour plus) made at the Hal-Roach-Studios are excellent too. I list these under the "comment"-button below; noting which are Hal-Roach films.
There are L&H silent-films in the public-domain made before L&H came to the Hal-Roach-Studios, which are not good, because they were made before the two became friends and teamed-up. They play different characters, and some films only have Laurel and not Hardy, or vice-versa. There are some excellent, L&H silent-films, which are not in the public-domain, and which were made at the Hal-Roach-Studios. These are on the DVD-series "The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy"; about ten volumes. They are expensive on DVD. Many are on VHS cheap. You can find the titles on said DVD-series and then search VHS. Two excellent, L&H silent-short-films (20-min.) are "Big Business" and "Soup to Nuts" (Only a VHS search of "Big Business" brings it up).
On this DVD:
"The Music Box", 1932
Laurel and Hardy attempt to carry a piano up the longest flight of stairs you have ever seen. Good.
"County Hospital" 1932
Ollie is in the hospital. Stan tries to make him more comfortable with unexpected results. Later antics on their drive home from the hospital.
The comedy scenes in the hospital are excellent.
"The Live Ghost" 1934
Laurel and Hardy are shanghaied (kidnapped) onto a ship set to sail for distant lands. The sailors believe the ship is haunted.
"Twice Two", 1932
Laurel and Hardy marry each other's sister, who look like a female them.
I have also seen volume-10 of this talking-shorts-series, which also has 4-shorts. "The Hoose-Gow" was very good. "They go Boom" and "Unaccustomed As We Are" are pleasant. "The Chimp" is not believable for not using a real chimp.
Volume-5 has the short "Helpmates", which is my favorite.
All these talking-shorts are from the Hal-Roach-Studios; though all the shorts are not excellent. From the four volumes that I have purchased; it looks like they put at least one excellent short on each four-short DVD, two of the shorts will be pleasant, and one not good.
Check out the DVD: "Laurel & Hardy: The Essential Collection" here on Amazon, which I discovered in July 2011. This 10-disc set includes most of Laurel & Hardy's talkie shorts and features produced by Hal Roach between 1929 and 1940.
Under the "comment" button below; I categorize their films with a description of each, and some recommendations.

I Love Lucy - The Complete Series (Seasons 1-6) (1951) Review

I Love Lucy - The Complete Series (Seasons 1-6) (1951)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been watching I Love Lucy since my elementary school years. I grew up watching it, even though I wasn't around when it first came out. Young and old love this show.
It is much cheaper buying the complete series than buying each individual season, which is what I did, until I saw this on Amazon, so I sold my other sets to get this one. Usually Amazon is pretty competitive with their prices, but I got this set for $137.72 at Sams Club. Now I will be waiting for complete series of TV sows to come out, rather than buy each individual season of different TV shows.
This set includes all 180 episodes plus the pilot episode to make it 181 episodes from the show I Love Lucy plus the 13 episodes from The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour series for seasons 7, 8, and 9, making it a total of 194 episodes. All of the discs are exactly the same as the individual season boxed sets, but there is a bonus DVD included.
This disc includes:
"Lucy Goes to Scotland"-In Color
"I Love Lucy: The Movie"
Lucy and Desi's First Joint TV Appearance
"I Love Lucy" At the Sixth Annual Emmy Awards
On-Set Commercial From the Series Premiere
It was great being able to see one of the episodes in color, to see what the audience saw when they were there watching the actors in person. It was especially nice to see Lucy's red hair, but I do have to admit I much prefer the series in black and white because that's what I'm used to.
Many people in the past reviews have mentioned I Love Lucy: The Movie. Well to be honest it's only three episodes (The Benefit, Breaking the Lease, and the Ballet) all one right after the other with some extra minutes in between each episode to add a story line from one episode to transition to another, so it flows together and makes sense to create a movie length show. It's still great to watch, but it wasn't as big a deal as I thought it was going to be.
And there are many other extra bonus features on each disc, the same bonus features that are on each of the season boxed sets. The discs are also the same in appearance both on the outside just looking at it, and also once put in the DVD player, on the main menu screen. Also what I have noticed on the bonus disc before choosing to play the commercial for Philip Morris, there is a warning label: "This material is shown in its historical context. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND SMOKING, WHICH CAUSES LUNG CANCER, AND OTHER DISEASES."
On all of the discs there are Spanish Subtitles, and on every season disc (not the bonus DVD) you can choose to watch any episode with English or Spanish as the spoken language.
Also on the first season discs in this set, on the main menu screen you can choose to play all episodes on the disc or play them individually. If you choose to play them all by clicking the "play all" button on the screen, the I Love Lucy song plays with Ricky singing the lyrics. Then there is a group of people singing the song right before it ends. There are several different scenes from the show that show on the screen while the song is playing. Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel are in color on the screen during the song, but everything else is in black and white. Before the song plays and right after it, a pink curtain pulls up and down that says "The Collector's Edition." You'll probably recognize the lyrics to the theme song.
These are the words to I Love Lucy:
I LOVE LUCY
AND SHE LOVES ME
WE'RE AS HAPPY AS TWO CAN BE
SOMETIMES WE QUARREL BUT THEN
HOW WE LOVE MAKING UP AGAIN
LUCY KISSES LIKE NO ONE CAN
SHE'S MY MISSUS AND I'M HER MAN
AND LIFE IS HEAVEN YOU SEE
CAUSE I LOVE LUCY
YES I LOVE LUCY
AND LUCY LOVES ME
The pilot episode on the first disc from the first season, I was surprised how clear the screen was. All of the discs have such clear picture quality, much better quality on these discs than on reruns on TV. Of course it may depend on how good a picture your TV gets. If you have a good picture on your TV, then the reruns on TV are usually pretty clear too.
In this complete series, the DVDs are not in cases, like they were for the individual seasons. Instead there are two cardboard book-like CD cases that they are in (accordion shape style). One has seasons 1-3 including the bonus disc and the other for seasons 4-9, so they are split up about equally to be the same size to fit into its case. For each slot in the CD case, it says what season and what disc the slot is. The colors on the slots match the colors on the discs. For example, the first seasons' discs are pink, so the slots for season one are pink. Everything is put in order and easier to locate and find.
There is also a pamphlet or small thin book (whatever you want to call it) that tells you what is on each disc. For each page in it, it lists each episodes' title, the air date and a small summary about the episode. And below the episode lists/guides, there are "Bonus Material Highlights" which mention which episodes from "My Favorite Husband" are on the disc and whatever special features the disc has: "Behind the Scenes" Featurette, "Behind the Scenes" Slide Show, slide shows, Audio Commentary, Meet Special People, Photo Gallery etc. On each page, there are several photos of Lucy and the gang from different episodes as well. Also, just like the DVDs and the book-like accordion CD cases are organized by color, so is the pamphlet/thin book. Season one's DVDs are pink, and so are the pages in the pamphlet/thin book for the pages that season one is on. Season three is colored blue, so the pages with season three are blue, and so are the DVDs and the slots to put them away in.
The pamphlet/thin book fits inside the box with the two CD cases. The cover for the box, with the I Love Lucy logo on it, fits nicely over it. It's a cute way to store the series, but it probably could have been put together better, but it's still great for any Lucy lover, and it's a wonderful collectors item.
It really is a great product, and better, a great show! It's great to watch over and over again.
Once a fan, always a fan!

I grew up with TV (the old, fuzzy black & white kind). One of my fondest memories was of watching The Little Rascals after school. When the restored versions showed up on VHS tape, I immediately bought several, but the others soon disappeared from the store shelves. I discovered and bought this double DVD set and LOVED the restored quality of picture and sound! My childhood memories came flooding back to me, and made me hunger for more. I can only hope that the rest of the series will be released also, and soon! Any lovers of The Little Rascals will appreciate the great quality of this set. Don't be misled by earlier cheap releases of The Little Rascals DVD's. This one is THE one to get!

Sgt. Bilko: The Phil Silvers Show - First Season Review

Sgt. Bilko: The Phil Silvers Show - First Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Phil Silvers show was one of the funniest comedies ever on TV and deserves a season-by-season release. The show originally ran from 1955-59, only four years, but had a whopping 143 episodes! A few years ago, Paramount released a 50th Anniversary Edition of the show (sometimes titled "Bilko" and sometimes "The Phil Silvers Show," though Wikipedia states the original title was "You'll Never Get Rich"). That earlier dvd collection only included 18 episodes selected from all 4 seasons, with most from the first season.
Most fans have wanted a season-by-season collection, and this release of Season One is a good step in that direction. (It would have been nice, as others have noted, if the manufacturer had included a "play all" viewing choice, but the picture quality is crisp.)
Please note: Ten episodes from this Season One set do overlap with the Sgt. Bilko - 50th Anniversary Edition (The Phil Silvers Show) earlier set, including the episodes New Recruits, The WAC, The Horse, The Eating Contest, Bivouac, the Twitch, the Investigation, The Revolutionary War, The Court Martial, and The Con Men. However, you're still getting 24 other episodes NOT on that earlier set, including the very funny The Empty Store, and others. It's worth buying the new set, though the Anniversary edition has more special features.
Here is a per disc list of contents:
Disc 1:
New Recruits (commentary by Allan Melvin)
The Empty Store
The WAC
The Horse
AWOL
The Boxer
Special Feature: The Lost Audition Show - never aired
Disc 2
The Hoodlum
Mardi Gras
The Eating Contest
The Centennial
Bivouac
The Singing Contest
The Twitch
Special Feature: Original Opening & Cast commercials
Disc 3
The Reunion
The Rich Kid
Hollywood
The Investigation
Kids in the Trailer
The Revolutionary War
The Transfer
Disc 4
The Rest Cure
Dinner at Sowici's
Army Memoirs
Miss America
The Court Martial (commentary by George Kennedy)
Furlough in New York
The Big Uranium Strike
Disc 5
Bilko and the Beast
Physical Check-up
Recruiting Sergeant
Hair
The Con Men
War Games
Bilko on Wall Street
Special Feature: "Lucy and the Efficiency Expert"
This Phil Silvers show was well written and well acted, with some very funny improvised moments. (The series creator Nat Hiken should be given a lot of credit for creating a quality show that just wasn't the same after he left.)
In this first season you have the episode titled "The Court Martial." Normally, that would sound like a serious subject. Not for Bilko. It seems the army wants to improve their timing and efficiency in processing new recruits. Unfortunately, one of the new recruits is a monkey. This is an episode that can't be described, but must be seen. And if you can get through it without laughing uncontrollably, then you need to see a doctor to see if your sense of humor was removed without your consent.
What is great about the Phil Silvers show is that even when the situations get insane, the humor never talks down to the audience. And Bilko, despite all his schemes, can never finally let his men down. (Except perhaps in the fourth season, done without Hiken, which is not the best.) This is also a show that had an integrated cast--a rarity then--and early TV appearances of Dick Van Dyke and others. The show started the career of actor George Kennedy.
Buy this set and encourage the manufacturer to put out the other 3 seasons on dvd. This show is unbelievably funny, with humor that isn't dated, and deserves to be enjoyed for generations. Silvers was a comedy genius.

The Abbott & The Costello Show: The Complete Series (Collector's Edition) (1952) Review

The Abbott and The Costello Show: The Complete Series (Collector's Edition) (1952)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Some say opportunity only knocks once...well, for those of us who missed THE ABBOTT AND COSTELLO SHOW in its previous DVD releases this is another chance to add all of the 52 episodes to our collection. The shows, digitally remastered, look and sound great and, as one might expect, contain many of the classic routines A&C made famous throughout their careers. For the devoted A&C fan, this is a must have!
In addition to the shows on eight discs, this boxed set includes a ninth DVD of special features: "Hey, Abbott" 1978 TV special hosted by Milton Berle, a 1948 short film entitled "10,000 Kids and a Cop," interviews with Chris and Paddy Costello, and "Lou Costello Home Movies: Holidays and Celebrations." There are also a couple of bonus features included amid the shows: a classic routine reel and more Lou Costello home movies at home and in Europe. You will also find four high-quality postcards featuring stills of the comedy duo.
The 52 episodes are listed on the covers of the two inner DVD cases, as well as in the Commemorative Booklet that comes with the set so it will be easy to find the shows you want to single out for another viewing. This booklet includes biography information on the show's cast and a history of A&C's career. The one potential drawback is that the fold-up boxed set comes in the traditional cardboard cover and may not hold up well over time. The inner DVD plastic cases, however, are well-protected and should hold up just fine.
The comedy of Abbott and Costello remains as funny today as when it was originally broadcast. This set gives the viewer the chance to once again sit back, laugh, and marvel at how these two men made such meticulously crafted routines look so easy. The A&C fan can't go wrong with this set!

3 Stooges: Idiots Deluxe (1945) Review

3 Stooges: Idiots Deluxe (1945)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ya know, the only reason this tape isn't 5 stars is for the fact that there are even better ones than these classics. These are 3 of my FAVORITE episodes, but I just can't bring myself to saying it's top-notch stooges (Such as the movie "A Plumbing We Will Go)
The first episode, "I Can Hardly Wait", is, in my opinion...the funniest episode on the tape. It starts off with Larry, Moe, and Curly, as defense workers, coming home and making dinner. There are the usual antics while preparing the food, which are funny, but not even as close as to what happens next. Moe and Larry split a ham and an egg, and leave Curly with a full egg shell and a whole bone. (They make it sound as if their being generous to the poor guy.) Curly, being Curly, believes them and attempts to eat the bone, cracking his tooth. It all results in Curly moaning and groaning and keeping Moe and Larry from sleeping. They try several "home remedies" (Hilarious) but when they fail, they take him to the dentist. I'll leave the ending out, as to not to spoil the funny scene at the end. Fans, this video is almost worth the price just for this episode.
Next is "Idiots De Luxe" which is funny, I would say the 2'nd best. I remember seeing this short when I was very little, and loving it. Curly and Larry are prosecuting Moe in court for "attempted murder". It then goes back in the past, where Moe is a nervous wreck and Curly and Larry take him for a trip to the woods for peace and quiet. It ends up they have the company of a bear in their cabin, who eats their food and gives them all quite a scare. This is funny episode, and I especially like Larry in it, he seems to have more energy and has many more lines. Great episode!
Last is the worst episode on the tape, but still very amusing, "Idle Roomers". Moe, Larry, and Curly are hotel workers who, while cleaning a room, find a wearwolf-guy prowling around. The thing is, whenever this wearwolf-guy hears music, he goes crazy! (Of course he hears music more than once and goes totally crazy on the 3 guys) It's a very funny episode, but I didn't laugh out loud many times, if...at all.
All together, you HAVE to buy this tape. It's one of the few Columbia House videos of the Stooges that have all 3 episodes on it very good. (They try to spread all the GREAT episodes out on different tapes.) But for this one...all 3 are wonderful and it is DEFINETLY worth the price. Get this one now fans, and hurry! -Stooge Fan

The Dick Van Dyke Show - Season Three (1961) Review

The Dick Van Dyke Show - Season Three (1961)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The good folks at Image Entertainment have done it again! This third-season, multi-disc boxed set of CBS-TV's "The Dick Van Dyke Show" (1961-1966) replicates the outstanding quality and tender-loving-care of its two predecessors.
This Season 3 package consists of five digital discs, each receiving its own "ThinPak" case, with appropriate (and very nice-looking!) high-resolution artwork and accompanying episode information. The outer slipcase features the "old-time TV" look, complete with a "lenticular" (3-D style) image adorning the mock "TV screen". The snappy-looking 3-D image offers up a "motion" picture of Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke) falling out of a jury box (from the episode "One Angry Man", which actually was not a Season 3 episode, but rather a program from the first season of the show).
By the way, it's also worth mentioning here that these season-three discs are all "Region Free" (or "Region Zero") encoded. This is a change from the two earlier boxed sets of this series, which were only encoded for "Region 1" playback.

This third-season set gives us 32 top-notch episodes with Rob and Laura Petrie and associated friends and neighbors (even though the packaging says only 31), including the hysterical "That's My Boy??", in which Rob is convinced he's brought the wrong baby home from the hospital. Also in Season 3: "October Eve", "Laura's Little Lie", "Big Max Calvada", and another of my all-time faves, "I'd Rather Be Bald Than Have No Head At All".
All of these episodes are uncut and unedited. The FULL shows, as filmed in 1963-1964, are presented here.
Picture quality is excellent throughout this set. These black-and-white shows have never looked so good! Good resolution, detail, and contrast. The original Mono sound is used, and it suffices just fine. The audio comes to us via robust Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono soundtracks.
A "Play All Episodes" option is also available (from the Main Menu). This feature makes it nice for those non-stop DVD-on-DVD marathons that every self-respecting fan of "Great TV" everywhere should subject themselves to at least once every few weeks! :)
BONUS FEATURES ....... Like the first two boxed seasons, this 3rd Dick Van Dyke Show set is jammed-packed with bonus material. Here's a rundown:
>> There are 2 audio commentary tracks, featuring Dick Van Dyke and show creator Carl Reiner (for "That's My Boy??" and "October Eve").
>> Two clips from the 1964 Emmy Awards (length = 2:30).
>> Assorted Cast & Crew Interviews.
>> Photo Galleries for many episodes.
>> A complete episode of "The Danny Thomas Show" (originally aired on October 21, 1963), in which Morey Amsterdam appears as his Dick Van Dyke Show character, Buddy Sorrell! This Danny Thomas program bears a strong resemblance, story-wise, to the 2nd-season Van Dyke Show episode, "Ray Murdock's X-Ray". Run time of this bonus program is 25:20, and the picture quality is quite good.
>> "Rehearsal Footage" (2:28) --- This extra contains a clip from an Arthur Godfrey-hosted TV documentary from May of 1966, "A Day In The Life Of Sheldon Leonard". We see some behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage for the season-five Van Dyke episode, "Talk To The Snail". Interesting stuff.
>> An excerpt (3:14) from Mr. Van Dyke's 1975 variety program, "Van Dyke & Company", in which Dick's former co-star, Mary Tyler Moore, makes an appearance. It's not a song-and-dance clip; it's a scripted comedy spot featuring Dick and Mary chatting.' Not exactly side-splittingly funny; but it's still fun to watch these two performers get together again, nine years after the Van Dyke Show ended.
>> Easter Eggs --- There are 5 hidden "Eggs" (one on each of the five discs). Each is a TV ad (circa 1990s) for "Nick At Nite", featuring "Chairman" Dick Van Dyke.' Be sure not to miss the one on Disc #5, in which Carl Reiner pops up (alongside Dick). That one is very funny!
These "Easter Eggs" can be accessed by pressing your remote's "Left Arrow" key while the "Opening Titles" chapter is highlighted. In two instances, however, you can get to the same hidden "Egg" by "left arrowing" from any of the other chapter choices as well. If an "Egg" is present, a "glow" will surround the cranium of Mr. Dick Van Dyke's artist rendering in the corner. Press "Enter" or "Play" now, and you'll see the "Nick @ Nite" promo spot.
>> Plus: There's also a four-page mini-booklet, featuring some third-season facts and trivia, plus an informative bio on Rose Marie.
NOTE: The packaging indicates that some "Original Commercials" are contained in this set. This is an error. There are none here.
Anyone that currently owns the other sets of The Dick Van Dyke Show from Image will, without question, want to snap up this third installment of this timeless TV classic. Image Entertainment, once again, proves that when it comes to providing consumers with superlative TV product on Digital Disc, they are a class act. With great video transfers, plentiful bonus features, complete uncut episodes, and smart-and-classy packaging -- this boxed set is another no-brainer for collectors.

Sgt. Bilko: The Phil Silvers Show-50th Anniversary Edition (1955) Review

Sgt. Bilko: The Phil Silvers Show-50th Anniversary Edition (1955)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From TV's Golden Age comes this vastly underrated sitcom with the brilliant Phil Silvers in the role of Sergeant Bilko, a conniving motor pool sergeant in peace time Middle America. He has at his his beck and call a platoon of fiercely loyal privates and a duo of devoted corporals played by Harvey Lembeck and Allan Melvin (the latter of whom provides an audio introduction for each episode on the DVD). Bilko's primary foil is Colonel Hall who is wonderfully portrayed by the avuncular Paul Ford. But Bilko and his crazy cadre will take on all comers, be they a visiting Senate investigative committee, crooked gamblers or a new strictly-by-the-book officer.
Bilko is the classic comic anti-hero. Whether his best laid planes pay off or not (and those of you familiar with sitcoms of the 50's and 60's know all about get-rich-quick schemes) the laughs are a sure thing. All this comedy and it comes sans the scatological references and overuse of sex that are mar today's TV fare.
The hallmark of Silver's comic brilliance is that you often now what's coming but its funny just the same. Bilko was the perfect vehicle for him with its wonderful writing and deep supporting cast (where did they ever find Maurice Gosfield?)
This DVD presentation is long overdue but worth the wait. In addition to the fine prints of these shows comes such special features are vintage commercials, Silvers' Emmy victories at the 1956 version of that TV award show and the obligatory talking heads from today.
Whether you remember the shows from their initial airings, or grew up with scattered reruns as I did or are brand new to Bilko, this DVD set will, like Phil Silvers, not disappoint.

Phil Silvers plays Ernie Bilko, a motor pool sgt in the US army. He is based at Fort Baxter, a small camp hidden away near a town called Roseville, in the wilds of Kansas. The camp is supposedly run by Colonel Hall, but it's Bilko that calls the shots. Whether it's poker games, betting on the horses, or when ever he was short of money, which was just about all the time, getting his platoon to cough up. Along with the other Sgt's from the Mess Hall, Signals, and Supply, Bilko is continually at war with Colonel Hall, who is desperately trying to put a stop to the gambling once and for all.

These shorts are from the era when the Stooges were comprised of Larry, Moe, and Shemp. These are the probably the last of the great Stooges shorts. With television encroaching upon the motion picture industry, cost cutting measures were soon underway. One such measure taken at Columbia that had already impacted MGM and other studios was the decrease in scope of the short-subject department in 1952. Stooge short veterans producer Hugh McCollum and director Edward Bernds were casualties of this action, and this left only Jules White behind as a person in the short subject department with a feel for what made the Stooges special. Shooting schedules were shortened, old Stooge shorts were cut up and recycled into sparse new material, and fans were not fooled by all of this.
Do be aware that the first six volumes of the Three Stooges will be available in June on The Three Stooges Collection, Volumes 1-6 Bundle. This really is not a great buy, but is pretty much on par with what you pay for all six volumes when they are on sale. This might be the way to go if you don't have any of the volumes yet.

The Three Stooges Collection, Vol. 7: 1952-1954 (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sony has confirmed that, with the current popularity of 3-D movies, they are going to include 3-D versions of "SPOOKS" and "PARDON MY BACKFIRE" in this set.
This will make up for the fact that 1953 brings about the sad cost-cutting practice of re-releasing an older short with a few minutes of new footage and giving it a new name.
Disc 1
1952
A MISSED FORTUNE - a weak re-working of a weak Curly short Healthy, Wealthy & Dumb. The Stooges live the high life on an inheritance.
LISTEN JUDGE - One of my favorites from this period. Three electricians are hired to find a short in the Judge's house.
CORNY CASANOVAS - The Stooges are all engaged to the same gold-digging girl. Told mostly as three seperate stories.
HE COOKED HIS GOOSE - One of their first off-the-mark solo offerings. Larry is a petshop dealer who's seeing Moe's wife while at the same time trying to steal Shemp's fiancée.
GENTS IN A JAM - Shemp's rich Uncle Phineas comes to visit the Stooges who are broke and about to evicted. It is a little painful to see Emil Sitka get kicked in the face multiple times. It feels like Jules White duirected it, but he didn't.
THREE DARK HORSES - The Stooges get into the political ring as crooked Kenneth MacDonald (later a judge on Perry Mason) hires them to cast the winning votes.
CUCKOO ON A CHOOCHOO - One of their wierdest shorts. Only Larry & Shemp are teamed, living in a stolen train car. Moe is the railroad detective hired to find the train car. Shemp spends most of his time dancing with an imaginary girl canary. Larry does his best Marlon Brando impression.
1953
UP IN DAISEY'S PENTHOUSE - A re-working of the Curly short "Three Dumb Clucks". Shemp impersonates his dad who is about to marry a golddigger planning to bump him off.
BOOTY AND THE BEAST - The Stooges unknowingly help a burglar break into a house. When the boys realize their mistake, they pursue the thief as he makes his escape on a train. The ending uses footage from "Hold That Lion" which includes CURLY's cameo as a sleeping train passenger.
LOOSE LOOT - The Stooges subpoena attorney Icabod Slipp to collect their inheritance from their late Uncle, pursuing him to the Circle Follies Theater. This includes attorney's office scenes from HOLD THAT LION.
TRICKY DICKS - A top notch detective spoof showing that the writers still have the stuff for a good comedy. The Stooges are detectives put on the trail of killer Slug McGurk. Again footage form HOLD THAT LION makes its way into a new short, this time it is the filing cabinet sequence.
Disc 2 (all matted to look widescreen except "Rip Sew & Stitch", "Bubble Trouble")
SPOOKS! in 2-D, then
SPOOKS! *** 3-D *** - As pie salesmen, the Stooges are captured by a mad scientist and his gorilla. Needless to say, the pies come flying directly at us, the audience. (Filmed May 11-14 of 1953 as a widescreen short.)
PARDON MY BACKFIRE in 2-D, then
PARDON MY BACKFIRE *** 3-D *** - Dangerous Bank Robbers go to the Stooges auto shop to repair their get-away car, the Stooges hear a radio broadcast about the hold-up & suspect their new customers. This is pure wire-up-the-nose Stooge slapstick. When Moe aims the grease gun at the us, the audience, we get it in the face (well almost). (Filmed 6/30 to 7/6 of 1953 as a widescreen short.)
RIP, SEW & STITCH - (re-issue of "Sing A Song Of Six Pants" from vol.5. No change to the story, but some new searching scenes in the shop were filmed using a double for Terry Hargen)
BUBBLE TROUBLE - (re-issue of "All Gummed Up" from vol.5 with 4:30 of new footage shot to change the ending. A double was used for Christine McIntyre in the new footage, she quickly runs off-screen never to be seen again for the rest of the short.)
GOOF ON THE ROOF - O.K., maybe I have more than one favorite in this set, this is the ultimate slatstick as the Stooges try to hook up a television antenna wire to their friend's TV set. This one suffers some from the letterboxing, I think it was shot for full frame then released with titles formatted for widescreen. (This was filmed from November 17-20 of 1952, before Columbia matted their camera viewfinders for widescreen, which is why this letterboxed presentation looks wrong. It is wrong.)
1954 (all matted to look widescreen)
INCOME TAX SAPPY - Yes, it is that time of year again, and the Stooges are ready to help veteran comic Benny Rubin get his tax break. (Filmed from 11/30/53 to 12/2/53 as a wide-screen short)
MUSTY MUSKETEERS - (re-issue of "Fiddler's Three" from vol.5 with some new footage at the beginning & end showing the Stooges with their girlfriends.)
PALS AND GALS - (re-issue of "Out West" from vol.5. Slight story change with new footage of the Stooges replacing "The Arizona Kid" rescuing the jailed girls, Larry ending up in jail & an escape using a covered wagon.)
KNUTZY KNIGHTS - (re-issue of "Squareheads Of The Round Table" from vol.5 with some new footage at the beginning)
SHOT IN THE FRONTIER - One of the last good Stooges shorts made. In a spoof of "High Noon" the Stooges have a shoot out with three outlaws who are out to get them. The most memorable gags are the lymricks read out on the tombstones & a strumming singing cowpoke who always hits a bad note.(Filmed from October 25-28 1953 as a widescreen short.)
SCOTCHED IN SCOTLAND - (re-issue of "Hot Scots" from vol.5 with a new opening scene of the Stooges getting their assignment to investigate strange goings on in Scotland. A double was used for McPherson in some new castle footage)
There is enough new material here to make this set worth getting. Add to that the inclusion of the 3-D shorts, and you have a "MUST-HAVE" set here. As a devoted Stooge fan I will be getting all 8 DVD sets, but this will be the last 5-star set.

These 22 digitally remastered shorts from 1952-1954 were made during a tumultuous time for The Three Stooges. First, in 1952 Curly succumbed to the illness brought on by his stroke six years earlier; he was only forty-eight when he died. Shemp had really hit his stride by this time and he is at the top of his game in the new shorts from this period, but budget cutbacks at Columbia forced director Jules White to recycle some old footage, so although the work in this collection is first-rate, one can't help but wonder what could have been done if they'd had the opportunity to develop more new material. Fortunately, this era did leave us with such classics as the Stooges' first 3-D shorts, "Spooks!" (1953) and "Pardon My Backfire" (1953) ; "Shot In The Frontier" (1954) a parody of the classic film High Noon ; and Larry's hilarious spoof of Brando in "Cuckoo on A Choo Choo" (1952). These shorts are all presented as they were projected in the theaters; some in widescreen for the first time since their original release. The Three Stooges Collection Volume 7 shows how the genius of Moe, Larry, and Shemp rose above all obstacles and enabled them to be the best at their craft.

The Addams Family - Volume 3 (1964) Review

The Addams Family - Volume 3 (1964)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I so loved the Addams Family growing up. I will always consider the Addams Family America's True First Family no matter who is in the White House. This final season of the Addams Family is truly awesome. I really must give the studio responsible for releasing this series credit. Most studios tend to so completely over price these old vintage collectible gem's that most people pass them up as being way too expensive. Most folk find overpricing of old series an exploitation of the mostly older folk for whom these old TV shows hold the dearest memories.
Most people know that these series were made way back in the 1960's when the residual rights for actors ran out long ago. Even with the cleaning and other incidentals that come with re-releasing a series gone so long the often Huge Preniums most studios demand is outragouse.
NOT SO with this whole Addams Family 3 volume Set where the average per Volume price was kept to just over $20 each. With all the post production cleaning it takes to get a quality DVD set of an old series out of mothballs and ready to be enjoyed by future generations $20 is a pretty good deal!
The Addams Family are endlessly funny without being the least bit tasteless or vulgar. The mother and father are not disfunctional they are just plain straight up normal weird and what I wouldn't give for parents who loved their kids but who were just plain weird was their only quirk. The core message in the whole of the Addam's Family is Wierd is Beautiful because too often what society deems normal is too a prison of mind body hope and spirit. Normality is a good but too much of even a good thing is not best for all concerned thats the message I got from the Addam's Family growing up and it has served me well indeed!

Abbott and Costello: Funniest Routines, Vol. 1 (2008) Review

Abbott and Costello: Funniest Routines, Vol. 1 (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Abbot & Costello: Funniest Routines Vol 1 is a great collection of classic routines from my favorite comedy team. There is close to an hour and a half of comedy on the disc, and they're the type of bits the whole family can enjoy.
There's a wide variety of stuff here, and it all looks great. Two of the bonus features have been colorized, the rest are presented from a great B&W print, that is probably the best one I've seen. The bonus features that are presented in color are the Trailer for "Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein" and a Campbell's Soup commercial. Here's hoping for an all out colorized version of A&C Meet Frankenstein!
For the curious among you, here's a list of the included routines:
-Hole in the Wall
-Mustard
-The Magic Act Bit
-Aspirin
-Army Drill
-Niagara Falls
-Jonah and the Whale
-7 X 13 is 28
-The Piano Bit
-The Lemon Bit
-The Dice Game
-Who's on First?
DVD has truly been a blessing to us fans of old time TV. This, and Volume 2, are a great way to have some classic Abbott & Costello routines available to enjoy whenever you want.

This release may be a good sign of things to come with seven months between volumes 1 (Oct 2007) and 2 (May 2008), and only three months between the upcoming volume 3 and volume 2.
The shorts included should be:
1940
You Nazty Spy!
Rockin' Thru the Rockies
A Plumbing We Will Go
Nutty But Nice
How High is Up?
From Nurse to Worse
No Census, No Feeling
Cookoo Cavaliers
Boobs in Arms
1941
So Long Mr. Chumps
Dutiful But Dumb
All the World's a Stooge
I'll Never Heil Again
An Ache in Every Stake
In the Sweet Pie and Pie
Some More of Samoa
1942
Loco Boy Makes Good
Cactus Makes Perfect
What's the Matador?
Matri-Phony
Three Smart Saps
Even as IOU
Sock-a-Bye Baby
"A Plumbing We Will Go" is possibly the best comedy ever made by the Stooges and alone is worth the price of admission. Here the Stooges attempt to repair the plumbing in a wealthy household. Of course they don't know what they're doing, as is always the situation. They end up crossing the electrical system with the plumbing with some hilarious sight gags resulting. You'll also see the Stooges taking advantage of Moe's strong resemblance to a certain German leader as the Stooges exit the depression and enter the war years.

The Golden Age of the Three Stooges continues in this exceptional third chronological collection. These 23 shorts from 1940-1942 are all digitally remastered for the highest quality in sight and sound, and this collection is even more special as it features an historical first: Moe Howard was the first American to portray Hitler on film, in 1940's "You Nazty Spy", which was Moe's personal favorite. It also contains the outstanding 1941 sequel, I'll Never Heil Again. Moe as a vicious dictator - who would have thought?! With biting satire and merciless wit, the Three Stooges gave the world a brave new perspective on the absurdity of evil and the world powers of the time. This collection also contains Curly's favorite, "A Plumbing We Will Go", which features the brilliant sight gag of a burst of water flowing from a new television set just as it's broadcasting a live report from Niagara Falls. The Three Stooges Collection Volume Three will soitenly keep you entertained as Larry, Moe, and Curly portray a variety of characters in their own inimitable way.

From 1962 to 1966,McHale s Navy was the ABC networks must-see comedy series. With an amazing cast, including Academy Award winner Ernest Borgnine (Lt. Commander McHale), comic genius Tim Conway (Ensign Parker), the one-of-a-kind comic talent of Joe Flynn (Captain Binghamton) this series remains second only to M*A*S*H as a truly funny military sitcom.Veteran seaman Quinton McHale is commissioned into the Navy Reserve at the start of WWII. He becomes Skipper of the Torpedo Patrol (PT) Boat #73 stationed on the island of Taratupa in the Pacific. Assigned to his command are six free-spirited, good-hearted swabbies who love to have fun. McHale and his men are constant irritants to their base commander, Captain Wallace B. Binghamton. Binghamton is forever trying to find a way to get rid of McHale and his rule-bending crew, while McHale & Co. are forever scheming to keep him from succeeding. Despite their hilarious party-boy shenanigans and utter disregard for Navy regulations, when duty calls, the crew of PT 73 does its job and does it well. With its talented stars, great writing and solid supporting cast, including Gavin McLeod (Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Love Boat), McHale s Navy is classic television at its finest and funniest.Bonus Features:* The Crew Reunion Ernest Borgnine, Tim Conway, Carl Ballantine, Bob Hastings and Edson Stroll reunite and share their memories of the show.* A special Colorized episode.
