(More customer reviews)I almost didn't purchase this set due to the negative comments before the release, but really wanted the 2nd half of the first season that wasn't on the other DVD set. After watching the first 8 episodes, I thought I'd let other skeptics know that these episodes are full length with Curt Massey's original music score. Also, in the episodes I've seen so far, there are no
product placements on the end credits. Don't worry, there isn't a black box
covering up that bar of soap; it's just not there. If you select special features on the main menu, you can select play all episodes with a brief intro by Linda Kaye Henning (Betty Jo) or Pat Woodell (Bobby Jo) or both of
them in some cases. Now let's not keep the Petticoat Junction fans waiting, please release the rest of the seasons in a timely manner!

Petticoat Junction: The Official Second Season (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)This was one of a group of CBS rural comedies popular in the 1960's that were actually grouped together as far as having interdependent casts - "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "Green Acres" being the other two series.
The show is about life at the rural Shady Rest Hotel, owned and operated by widow Kate Bradley (Bea Benaderet). Action centers around guests at the hotel as well as Kate's three attractive daughters, Betty Jo, Bobbie Jo, and Billie Jo. The actresses portraying Billie Jo and Bobbie Jo changed over the years. In fact, season two is the last of two seasons for the first actresses to portray these roles. Betty Jo, the youngest and the tomboy, was played by the Linda Henning, daughter of the series creator Paul Henning, for the entire run of the series. The hotel is literally in the middle of nowhere, halfway between two very small towns. The actual location (state for example) is never given, and the issue of how exactly it is that Kate manages to make what seems to be quite an adequate living running a hotel that theoretically should have few if any guests is never even addressed. This is a show very much rooted in the early 60's, and the idea is escapism and fun, not realism.
The first season of this show that was put out a few months ago is excellent. They were not the cut down versions that TVLand showed, so I expect these to be the same, although you never know with Paramount, The Odd Couple being exhibit A.
This season is from the 1964-1965 TV season, and thus there are lots of episodes (36 I believe), since production costs were lower and thus reruns were fewer. This is not something you'll want to sit down and watch back-to-back marathon style. Instead, I'd watch a couple of episodes a week. That way you maximize the fun of the show, and it still holds up pretty well today, and minimize the sameness you might feel if you just watch one episode after another.

Petticoat Junction - Ultimate Collection (1963) Review

(More customer reviews)These episodes are the early black and white shows not broadcast since original airdates (approx. 26 mins each). Each of the 20 episodes are preceded by a new introduction by actress Linda Kaye Henning. There is a great 45 minute "Making Of" documentary that will have you saying "He's still alive!" and "So that's why she left!". The surviving cast's memories of working on the show are still sharp, and you will learn a few new things. There is also about 20 minutes of CAST COMMERCIALS where the stars do the sponsor's commercials in their Hooterville roles. This set will remind you of an innocent time gone by.
My only complaint is that the picture quality of the shows is grainier that other TV shows from major DVD distributors. The transfers were made from film prints rather than the original negatives. The audio is a little muffed at times and could have been cleaned up.

Petticoat Junction (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)I loved watching re-runs of this show in the late 70's when I was a kid. I remember the opening theme songs being a big part of what I liked about this show. There were 2 opening theme songs. The 2nd theme song replaced the 1st one when June Lockhart joined the cast. I have one of the other Petticoat Junctions DVD (No theme songs on that one Either) and though it has only 4 episodes verses the 7 on this DVD I like it just a bit better than this one. I guess it is because one of the episodes that is titled "The Beatnik" has Dennis Hopper playing the beatnik and I am a fan of most of his work. This DVD is a good buy especially if you are a big fan of the show. None of the shows are in color as advertised, and the picture quality isn't as clear and bright as it could be. But again, one of my biggest disappointments was the absence of the opening theme song. The theme song is replaced with very boring banjo music. If you like the opening theme songs as much as I do you can give them a listen. I had both of the opening theme songs to Petticoat Junction and thought I would share them with other fans of the show. They are both mp3's. I hope you enjoy listening to them.Petticoat Junction 1963-1970 (Opening Theme, 1) (...)

The Beverly Hillbillies/Petticoat Junction Christmas Collection (1963) Review

(More customer reviews)These two classic country comedy shows from the 60s are true time pieces of a simpler time. But they are also amusing and extremely charming slices of Americana. Since MPI has released the only authorized "Petticoat" and "Hillbillies" DVDs to date (see their "Ultimate Collections" for both shows), these are the only DVDs to feature the wonderful theme songs that introduce each series over the opening credits. Also, Linda Kaye Henning, daughter of creator-producer Paul Henning and co-star of "Petticoat" (as daughter Betty Jo Bradley) provides informative introductions to all 3 shows on this DVD plus does a sweet Christmas greeting with co-star Frank Cady (known as Hooterville General Store owner Sam Drucker). There's also some original cast commercials from both series, including a great Jethro recitation of "The Night Before Christmas" for Kellogg's Corn Flakes. This DVD is a real treat and a great buy. (P.S. There's also another bonus - a Christmas episode from Henning's earlier series from the late 50's -- "The Bob Cummings Show/Love That Bob" with Dwayne Hickman and Rosemary DeCamp.
