YES this IS a cartoon version of Jack London's Whitefang.
The names are the same but the situations are..... not.
Whitefang remains in the north instead of going to California with Wheaten Scott.
Wheaten Scott has a daughter(and no other family as opposed to the large household he had in the book) and Whitefang is a big arctic wolf(dog) who pals around with Wheatens daughter, Wendy, as opposed to paling around with Wheaten. Whitefang and Wendy share many Yukon adventures. many of them absurd, outlandish, unrealistic, just plain silly..... BUT for a child, it's heaven.
I LOVED this show when i was a kid. I didnt have cable tv, let alone HBO, but my friend did. the highlight of every morning was getting to her house early in the morning so we could tune in to the next adventure before catching the bus. Imagine that..... a fifth grader who can wait to jump out of bed and catch the bus!*boy were our parents fooled!!* I was head over heels in love with the world of Jack London and his stories of the Yukon. I loved the wolves, the sled dogs, the wildness of the land, the HISTORY.... i guess i was a very strange kid. but none the less i aced my history classes and excelled in reading!
I have waited YEARS to finally get my hands on this! I recently bought this collection mainly for my own nostalgic peace of mind, but it turns out my two sons (4 and 5 yrs old) both love it too! That just makes it all the more enjoyable because i dont have to listen to them whine and complain when i watch it - as opposed to when i tried to watch some other movie that wasnt on their level.
My ONLY complaint, and its not even worth removing a star for, is the packaging..... i absolutely HATE that each DVD is in a paper sleeve inside a thick box. again... i have small children who dont know they are small.... they want to do things for themselves and these sleeves can tear easily or become lost, OR thrown away by accident. But thats easily remedied. i keep the set on the top shelf and out of their reach...
I Say Give it a try... buy the used copy if you're worried you wont like it.
Granted, it IS cheap animation..... but if you have a kid who likes wolves, sled dogs, history, and Jack London(or if YOU like all those things) then its worth it to add it to the collection.
And if you're just totally cowardly about it.... rent it from netflix first. Yep. they have the DVD's too, which was what tipped me off in the first place. i almost rented them when i decided to see if Amazon had them instead.
No regrets!
*slight warning to parents*
This is a historal accounting, and while much of it is pretty far fetched, you may want to be aware that a lot of the topics deal with dog fighting, attempted murder, stealing, gun violence, arson, violence in general(one scene where a big burly claim jumper chases Wendy with an ax if i'm not mistaken) and animal trapping.
Fair warning if any of that bothers you. Watch it for yourself before you make a final judgment whether or not your children should see it.
I cant say anything about the bonus episodes because i havent watched those yet. when/if i do, i'll update this review.

The DVD is nothing less than priceless!! To see these programs again after 60 years is beyond words. I actually remember some of the segments. Many hours went into restoring the old kinescopes resulting in great pictures and sound. You don't have to have been raised in Chicago to enjoy this DVD. A true treasure of early television.

This series of 5 CDs contains only 2 episodes per CD. The video quality is very, very poor and "The Fishin' Hole" theme song has been removed. If Andy Taylor knew about the poor quality of these CDs, Barney definitely would "be allowed to arrest somebody!". If it were my company (Amazon.com), I would warn the prospective buyer of this CD set. If you are a devoted TAGS rerun watcher, I can safely rest assured that you will be disappointed and irritated with these CDs. Madacy is the name on these CDs.

The White Shadow: The Complete Second Season (1978)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ken Reeves (Ken Howard) and the basketball team of Carver High School returned for a second season of antics on and off the court. In this season, a lot more personal issues were dealt with, such as Gomez dealing with a father who when he wasn't gambling was physically abusing his family, Thorpe dealing with VD because he and Coolidge were both physically involved with the same girl, and Jackson learning his dropped out ex girlfriend became a prostitute. The series reaches its climax in the end as several team members are about to graduate just after winning the city championship, one will not live to see his cap and gown (I'll be nice and not give any more away). A few changes were made to the cast, Ken's sister and brother in law, the Donahues were slowly moved on. Russell Phillip Robinson joined up as team equipment manager Phil Jeffers, and John Mengatti in the occasional role of Salami's (Tim Van Patten) cousin from New York (and new player) Nick Vitaglia (he will join the opening credits in the final season which will hopefully be out soon after this one). As I said before in my review of season 1, this was a series I grew up with during Junior High (and it helped prepare me for the life of a high school kid). I am looking forward for this set (and when it comes out season 3 as well) to arrive in my DVD library.:-)

He's the person his players can turn to when things go wrong at home, or when things get tough out on the street. Clashes still arise highlighting the differences between the world Coach Reeves knows and the tough neighborhoods where his players live, but ultimately the bond between coach and player is strengthened-and the daily hardships they face become a true learning experience for all.

Absolutely Fabulous - White Box (1994) Review

Absolutely Fabulous - White Box (1994)

This ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS special originally aired during Christmas in 2004.
With Saffy (Julia Sawalha) in Africa getting married, Eddy (Jennifer Saunders) decides to renovate the kitchen...again. She calls in her old friends Bettina and Max (Miranda Richardson and Patrick Barber), but Bettina's concept of "white box" soon causes more trouble than Eddy wants. Meanwhile Patsy (Joanna Lumley) is in hospital for some "pay as you go" procedures. Adding to the chaos are Marshall and Bo (Christopher Ryan and Mo Gaffney), on the run from the authorities following their latest fraudulent television ministry.
Needless to say, by the time Saffy returns home, the kitchen is still in a shocking state. Convinced the answer lies in one of her myriad past lives, Eddy organises for a regression to find the kitchen of her dreams...
It's fun catching up with old characters Max and Bettina (previously seen in the "New Best Friend" episode from Season 2), plus there are some great cameo roles for Nathan Lane as an eccentric designer, and Laurie Metcalf ("Roseanne") as Eddy's psychic medium. Home design guru Sir Terence Conran also puts in a fleeting appearance. And don't forget the always-hilarious Mother (June Whitfield) and Bubble (Jane Horrocks).
It's been a long time in coming to DVD, but fans of AbFab are sure to love it!

Edina and Patsy are back and devastatingly divine in this extra fabulous special, with a hilarious guest appearance by Nathan Lane! Edina has been bitten by the home makeover bug and wants to redecorate the kitchen. The trouble is, she's awfully fuzzy on the specifics. At wit's end, Eddy and Patsy shop for inspiration -- under threat from Saffy to make a decision -- but will they fail and have to resort to redecoration regression therapy?DVD Features:FeaturetteOther

Classic Sci-Fi TV - 150 Episodes (2009)

Mill Creek Entertainment has done it again! After tackling TV Westerns, TV Crime Shows, TV Spies and Family TV Shows, this offering focuses on early television science fiction shows, with a bit of horror and the paranormal thrown in for good measure. There is quite a bit to savor in this set, so here's the rundown, by category:
Animated Series:
Captain Fathom - 3 episodes
Clutch Cargo - 1 episode
Space Angel - 9 episodes
Filmed TV Series:
Captain Z-Ro - 24 episodes
Flash Gordon - 14 episodes
Johnny Jupiter - 1 episode
One Step Beyond - 16 episodes
Rocky Jones, Space Ranger - 23 episodes
Thriller (Boris Karloff version) - 1 episode
Live Television Series:
Climax - 1 episode
Lights Out - 4 episodes
Tales of Tomorrow - 6 episodes
Filmed Dramatic Anthology Series:
G.E. Theater - 2 episodes
The Star and the Story - 1 episode
Your Jeweler's Showcase (Operation E.S.P.) - 1 episode
Unsold TV Pilots:
Captain Fathom (live action version)
Destination Space
Here Comes Tobor
The Shadow (Tom Helmore version)
The Shadow: Invisible Avenger (Richard Derr version)
Tales of Frankenstein
Public Service Film:
Stamp Day for Superman (cast of "The Adventures of Superman")
Movie Serials:
The Phantom Empire
Radar Men from the Moon
The Undersea KingdomWhile some may consider the inclusion of movie serials to be a bit of a cheat on this set, one can argue that movie serials (and radio) served as a starting point of sorts for the early years of episodic television and, of course, the serials did eventually make their way to television's airwaves. Perhaps the only major omission of a show with a paranormal flavor that is in the public domain and is not included in this set is Boris Karloff's limited series "The Veil" which, possibly, could have substituted for one of the serials. Regardless, this 12-DVD set includes a mixture of some very common, some not so common, and some downright rare shows. Arguably, the biggest "find" on this set is the inclusion of 24 episodes of "Captain Z-Ro" and, to the best of my knowledge, this set marks the commercial DVD debut of Boris Karloff's "Thriller," a series that many fans have long desired to see on DVD. Perhaps the inclusion of the "Thriller" episode "The Return of Andrew Bentley" might prompt further consideration for an official DVD release of this series in the future. And those who previously purchased Mill Creek's 4-DVD set of 50 "One Step Beyond" episodes will be delighted to know that of the 16 episodes included here, only one episode ("Where Are They?") is repeated from that earlier box set.
Among the unsold pilots, I enjoyed the second incarnation of "The Shadow" titled "Invisible Avenger," which was filmed on location in New Orleans in the late 1950s and was eventually released theatrically, and "Tales of Frankenstein." Don Megowan, who appears as the monster in "Frankenstein" also appears in the live action version of "Captain Fathom," which plays like a low rent version of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea." One also wonders about the possibilities of "Destination Space" had it been picked up as a regular series by CBS. Though a bit on the talky side (especially in the middle scenes depicted on earth), the pilot featured solid performances from TV veterans like Harry Townes, Charles Aidman, Edward Platt, Whitney Blake and Gail Kobe, and had the backing of a major studio, Paramount.
As is the case with compilations of public domain shows, the audio/visual quality is all over the map and reflects a variety of sources such as kinescopes for the live shows and unrestored 16 millimeter syndication prints for many of the TV show episodes. While none of the episodes that I have viewed so far are unwatchable, this is definitely not a set for videophiles, nor those expecting state-of-the-art special effects. In fact, the special effects are downright primitive when compared to today's special effects and CGI. But considering the low budgets for most of these productions, it's obvious that the SFX people were trying to do the best they could with the limited resources available to them and that's part of the charm of watching these early Sci-Fi TV efforts.
The variety of the shows included in this set is so broad that there is bound to be something to appeal to almost anyone who even remotely enjoys science fiction. This set is highly recommended for classic/vintage TV fans and those who enjoy the early days of science fiction on the small screen. My rating is closer to **** & ½ for this release, just missing a full five stars given the variable audio/visual quality.

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes, Vol. 3 (1952)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a big HMer fan and consider the work between these four actors funny, touching and timeless. If you don't like certain episodes, fine; To each his own. I do have to scratch my head about those reviewers who take exception to the picture quality; That the DVD should be clearer than the original VHS releases. Are they aware that the "Lost Episodes"
are "Kinescopes" and not "Film" like the "Classic 39". Up until 1957 most TV sitcoms and all variety shows were broadcast live with no means to record the transmission. (Networks wouldn't film most shows due to the expense involved.(Multiple cameras, editing, developing etc.) "Lucy" was an exception. ) Standard practice was to use a single "Film" camera focused on a studio moniter during the actual performance. This would then be quickly developed and shown several hours later for the west coast. These resulting "Moniter films" are "Kinescopes "and they are no where near as clear as film, the images look crammed into the screen since the film camera was slightly "zoomed in" so as not to get the edges of the live moniter. In '57 video tape was introduced and shows that weren't filmed were at least preserved for posterity on videotape. I doubt any modern technology could undo the qualities of a Kinescope. These are treasures from the early TV age. I personally wouldn't be so picky about the picture quality. These shows are what they are; Great comedy thankfully preserved in a primitive medium. Think of all the shows that weren't Kinescoped. They were seen once and were gone, lost in the ethos of time and space! Anyway, I'll take Kinescoped Honeymooners over any number of digitally recorded reality shows today.

Unless you are a die hard Laurel and Hardy fan, I would suggest you pass this item up. I expected to get Laurel and Hardy doing comedy together. Almost all the programs are silent and they are not the two in the typical comedy situations. You get tired of the piano music and trying to figure out where they are. So, I was not impressed with this product.

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes, Boxed Set 5 (1966)

The stand alone 39 are deemed "Classic" for a reason...and with just cause, I'd say. These "lost episodes" of all varying lenths---with some as long as 45minutes!---are either too short or too long for the material they utilize. By all means have a look at some or all of these "lost episodes", but I'd caution against buying them (even if they weren't as vastly overpriced as they are---The 13 episodes here cost approx the same as the Classic 39 do!) These episodes are not, to sum up, the sort that one will wish to watch over & over again, unlike the Classic 39. This review relates to collection #5 (I don't know why it may be appearing on other collections, as well.) The episodes in collection #5: "A Weighty Problem"---Ralph has to lose weight for bus physical in a rather long episode (long episodes herein are approx. 35-45 minutes in lenth). This theme plays out similar to the golf episode in the Classic 39."Lunch Box"---Ralph eats other drivers lunch, then complains to Alice in this very short (less than 15 minutes), lifeless episode."Lost Baby"---Ralph finds baby on bus & wants to keep it. A terrible premise that goes against what makes the Honeymooners work as a sitcom. "The Man in the Blue Suit"---Ralph hides his poker winnings in old coat & tries to retreive it after Alice donates it to a charity shop."Stand in for Murder"---terrible episode wherein Ralph is hired by a gangster's boys because he looks like the on-the-run crime boss. Gleason plays both parts but the long episode ends like a Monty Python one, ie., abruptly & seemingly unfinished."The Prowler"---There's a prowler in building in this episode without a premise."Box Top Kid"---Ralph buys a ton of groceries to enter numerous Box-Top contests, trying to repeat Alice's sister's contest-winning cruise to Europe, in this silly episode."Hero"---Ralph tells building kid how he was a great athlete in this long episode that goes nowhere."Two Tickets to the Fight"---Alice's Uncle George's visit prevents Ralph from going to the fights with Norton."People's Choice"---Ralph captures wanted criminal & becomes a "Hero" with his pic appearing in newspaper. Then he is roped into running as a stooge for local govt. operatives. It's the status quo episode, I'd call it: "Don't vote for me," he lectures a crowd (his studio audience!), vote for the other candidate, "he has the experience.""One Big Happy Family"---The Norton's & the Kramdens move into fancy apt. together to save on rent & the boys argue about everthing, including the TV. This episode is in terrible shape---lines wave through the picture for its entirety."Finders Keepers"---The boys try to buy a candy store in this long and rather rough episode. "Kranden vs.Norton"---Norton wins a TV on a ticket Ralph bought him for his birthday. Then then argue in nightcourt who is entitled to the set. This last episode is better than most of the above, but still nowhere near the level of quality of the Classic 39 episodes. It makes me think that that term is especially apropo--especially after viewing these "lost episodes." Cheers!

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (TV, 1954) (Plus Bonus ""Lights Out"" Episode) (2007) Review

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (TV, 1954) (Plus Bonus Lights Out Episode) (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is released from Alpha Home Entertainment. The DVD contains two episodes: "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (B&W 48 minutes) and "The Lost Will of Dr. Rant" (B&W 22 minutes).
"Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" stars Michael Rennie as the titular character, whose secret experiment unleashes the "beast" within him. This Robert Louis Stevenson tale is in fact an episode from the anthology TV show "Climax!" (aired on July 28, 1955) and adapted for TV by Gore Vidal. The original music is by Jerry Goldsmith.
Unlike more famous 1931 and 1941 feature-film versions (starring Fredric March and Spencer Tracy respectively), this TV episode dispenses with the good doctor's melodramatic love story and focuses on the consequences of Jekyll's experiment. Only the bare-bone elements of the original story has made it to this version, and despite the efforts of the players (including Cedric Hardwicke and Mary Sinclair), the result is not very impressive. Michael Rennie (perhaps best known for his performance as "Klaatu" in "The Day the Earth Stood Still") is very good as Dr. Jekyll, but his portrayal of the hedonistic Mr. Hyde is a bit disappointing with minimum amount of special make-up. Probably this couldn't be helped because it is said most of the show's episodes were broadcast live, so the crew had to do without elaborate effects.
"The Lost Will of Dr. Rant" is based on M. R. James's short story "The Tractate Middoth" and this short work is in fact from the TV show "Lights Out." The episode was aired on May 7, 1951, starring Leslie Nielsen, Pat Englund, Russell Collins and Eva Condon.
The story begins when John Eldred, an anxious old man looking for a rare edition of the Talmud, arrives at a Boston library. Leslie Nielsen plays a librarian named Bill, who is more than happy to help him find the book, but some mysterious powers intervene in the form of a creepy stranger. The episode has a very interesting premise, a blend of ghost story and detective novel, and the adaptation is fairly faithful to James's original short, but it really needs a better final act that is too short.
As these are from old TV shows, you should expect neither crisp image nor clear sound quality. Still the DVD has a curiosity value with two episodes from the earliest days of American TV shows.

BAD NEWS FOLKS! This not a re-release of the CabinFever transfers. 14 of these are Blackhawk prints, unrestored from 16mm! And two titles have EDITS!
Comparing this release to Cabin fever's 1999 DVD release shows that Cabin Fever's has less artifacting. Those are defenately the superior DVD releases!
The Little Rascals: Vol 1 - 12 Cabin Fever Box Set (6 discs)
The edited titles in this set are BEAR SHOOTERS & WASHEE IRONEE, they were complete in the Cabin Fever DVDs.
The old RHI VHS master got used for WASHEE IRONEE, about 11 minutes into the short, when the gang askes a Chinese boy how to wash clothes, you see him drink some water but the close up of him spitting the water on the clothes & saying "Washee, Washee" is MISSING. The shot right after with the gang looking puzzled is also MISSING. We pick up again with a longer shot of the gang spitting the water on the clothes. The reason for this edit is really a mystery. It does not censor anything that we don't see elsewhere in the short, it must have been an editing error when putting reel 1 & reel 2 together.
Blackhawk never put their name on any 35mm material that they used. They spliced their titles in to their 16mm negative. The sad part is that we will be deprived of the original title artwork.
Here is the list of the 14 titles with the Blackhawk homemovie title cards:
Barnum & Ringling Inc., which does NOT have the original Hal Roach Music & Effects soundtrack! This was one of the first Hal Roach silent films to be produced with a Music & effects soundtrack disc for theaters to run with the film. The Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum often runs this short with its original soundtrack. Too bad we get the Blackhawk Gaylord Carter soundtrack here!

I am assured by Genius Entertainment that these will be dual layered DVD-9 discs, well capable of handling the amount of content on each disc.
The only minor disappointment is that MGM released 22 of the silent Hal Roach Our Gang (Little Rascals) Comedies and 17 of them exist. RHI owns the rights to these which keeps them off of the public domain Our Gang sets. It would have been nice to see all 17 of these in this set, but 3 is better than none.

Walt Disney Treasures - Mickey Mouse in Black and White (1932) Review

Walt Disney Treasures - Mickey Mouse in Black and White (1932)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Despite this being a seminal moment in DVD history having the black and white Mickey Mouse cartoons available in the best possible digital format, this Disney Treasures collection is not a complete set. As mentioned, this set will contain 34 black and white MM shorts, but they are only selections out of about 75 made between 1928-1935. Last year's "Silly Symphonies" collection was put together in a similar way with a little more than half of the 73 or so made. Rumors are that next year's DT series will include a "Mickey Mouse in Living Color Vol. 2", which means that host/compiler Leonard Maltin possibly intends to include second volumes of past and future collections in this series that don't contain everything in one set due to large amounts originally produced. When these MM black and white shorts were available on laserdisc years ago, they were also released in two volumes.
Here is a complete list of the B&W selections on this collection (year-by-year) straight from the Disney press release:
1928--"Steamboat Willie", "The Gallopin' Gaucho", "Plane Crazy" (actually the first official Mickey Mouse short--originally silent with sound added later and re-released following the success of "SW").
1929--"The Karnival Kid", "Mickey's Follies"
1930--"The Fire Fighters", "The Chain Gang", "The Gorilla Mystery", "The Pioneer Days"
1931--"The Birthday Party", "Mickey Steps Out", "Blue Rhythm", "Mickey Cuts Up", "Mickey's Orphans"
1932--"The Duck Hunt", "Mickey's Revue", "Mickey's Nightmare", "The Whoopee Party", "Touchdown Mickey", "The Klondike Kid"
1933--"Building a Building", "The Mad Doctor", "Ye Olden Days", "The Mail Pilot", "Mickey's Gala Premiere", "Puppy Love", "The Pet Store", "Giantland"
1934--"Camping Out", "Gulliver Mickey", "Orphan's Benefit", "The Dognapper", "Two-Gun Mickey"
1935--"Mickey's Service Station" (Curiously, "Mickey's Kangaroo" is not included here. This was really the last B&W Mickey cartoon done shortly after he premiered in color in "The Band Concert").
The press release has stated that, in addition to all the features mentioned above, there will also be rare footage of the only MM B&W pencil test known to exist. This pencil test was done for "The Mail Pilot." Also, new interviews were apparently done with the legendary animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston for the documentary. Much-needed audio commentary (presumably by Leonard Maltin) has also been added to the poster gallery on disc 2 that was absent from last year's "Mickey Mouse in Living Color."
For those not acquainted with last year's "Mickey Mouse in Living Color": that collection collects Mickey's first three years in color between 1935-1938. Next year's rumored Vol. 2 will probably complete the color Mickey, going up to his last short under Walt Disney--"The Simple Things" (1953).
More rumors for next year's DT series: "Wartime Cartoons" (originally intended for this year) and "The Chronological Donald" (obviously the first phase of the many Donald Duck cartoons produced through the 1930's-1960's).

The Lost Valentine (Hallmark Hall of Fame) (2011) Review

The Lost Valentine (Hallmark Hall of Fame) (2011)

This was one of the best movies I've ever seen! Betty White is an incredibly talented woman. Whether a comedy or drama, she always brings it home and never disappoints. I went through a dozen tissues while watching this wonderful story that was so well written and well acted. I'm going to buy it for my Mom for Valentines Day. However, I found it to be cheaper on the
Hallmark website than on Amazon. If you like the Notebook, you will love this movie! Buy it, own it, watch it, treasure it! Enjoy but don't forget the tissues!

The Twilight Zone, Vol. 43 (1959) Review

The Twilight Zone, Vol. 43 (1959)

Am I the only person who knows what episodes are on this DVD. All the reviews I have read doesn't mention the episode that are on this volume. Well I guess I will have to give them. Below are the episodes of this volume: 1)"Where Is Everybody?" (Episode 1- Oct. 2, 1959) 2)"The Eye Of The Beholder" (Episode 42- Nov. 11, 1960) 3)"A World Of His Own" (Episode 36- July 1, 1960) 4)"A Thing About Machines" (Episode 40- Oct. 28, 1960) Those are the episodes in this volume. This is a great volume of the Twilight Zone. It is so great that we should at least let people know what episodes are on this volume.

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes, Boxed Set 2 Review

The Honeymooners - The Lost Episodes, Boxed Set 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These shows always bring me up when I'm feeling down. These DVD boxed sets have bonuses and various bits that you won't find elsewhere. I do not recall the VHS tape versions of these having the extras, nor were they as easy to navigate thru, as they are on these DVD's.Included are Honeymooners BLOOPERS and a HISTORY OF THE LOST EPISODES. Very nice packaging and artwork in an extremely durable 4 DVD case. "Ralph's diet, and Holloween Party are drop dead funny! I agree with one of the other reviews for volume #1, The quality is very good & exactly as I remember them when they aired in re-runs. The camera techniques used in these shows were not of todays digital quality, but again, they are good as the finest copy that you'll find anywhere.
