I know that there are tons of episodes out there, so please keep 'em coming, they're terriffic!

The Story of English, Programs 1-9 (1986) Review

The Story of English, Programs 1-9 (1986)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This series treats English seriously and intelligently. It regards English (in all of its forms) as flowers. All different but beautiful. Wonderful historical and cultural info too. I have used this with 6th graders and high school students(grades 9 to 12). Regardless of level there is something for everyone.
The Irish and Scottish sections are first rate.( Did you know that Jimi Hendrix was Irish? Cool. ) I learned more about British English than I thought possible. Shakespeare and Joyce and Mark Twain are treated royally. The section that presents info on the powerful contributions of African-Americans throughout history is superb. Nothing is left out. Etymologies abound!
Run...don't walk to snare this series. I have watched this perhaps 50 times (with and w/o students) since its debut on PBS and know how valuable this tool is for a teacher of English.
ps A very unique feature is that they go to the workplace to hear each variety of English speaker. The common man tells his story and you learn "how" he tells the story. The sub-titles are used to help us make sense of the dialect and "slanguage" as it exists. It is a living oral-biography of the language and the people. This is a loving tribute from start to finish.
pps Don't listen to that mook from the not-so great white north.
He knows not of what he speaks.

The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis 18 Volume Set Review

The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis 18 Volume Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" remains one of my all-time favorite TV series (along with "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and The Twilight Zone"), so I was delighted to find the entire series on one set. Unfortunately, these prints are no better than my old Beta and VHS copies recorded from the old Christian Broadcasting Network and TV Land. In fact, that's exactly where many of these recordings come from -- dubbed from cable TV broadcasts, complete with network logos on the screen. The syndicated versions have several minutes cut to make way for extra commercials, so you're not getting complete episodes in many cases. Despite the less than stellar quality of the prints, this series is still one of the all-time greats in terms of writing and performance, so until Fox (or whichever company now holds the rights) gets around to an official release, this bootleg set is as good as you're likely to find. The copyright on each of these episodes was renewed, by the way, so the films are not in the public domain, which makes it all the more surprising that none are available legitimately.

Have Gun - Will Travel - The Complete Third Season (1957) Review

Have Gun - Will Travel - The Complete Third Season (1957)
Average Reviews:

I purchased the entire Columbia House HGWT series, and still bought the first two seasons on DVD. Season three will be no exception.
Everything I wrote about HGWT in my seasons 1 and 2 reviews still holds. The best TV writers were still generating excellent scripts, and the marvelous Richard Boone carried everything they wrote and more. It is not possible to heap enough accolades on everyone involved in these productions.
Again, the pristine quality of the B&W cinematography is often breathtaking on locations. It is like Ansel Adams selected the sites and handled the photography.
Amazing series, not to be missed.

Blade - House of Chthon (2006) Review

Blade - House of Chthon (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Blade: the Series is currently playing on HDNet. I watched the first three episodes and was totally hooked. I downloaded the rest of the episodes from iTunes and watched them all over the space of about a week. I regret having missed the show when it was running on Spike. I think the show's creators did a really good job of translating the movies to television, and the show itself was a little more adult than most basic cable fare.
Unlike some of the other reviewers, I think the production values and acting in the show were just fine. While I initially had some problems adjusting to Kirk Jones as Blade, I think he improved a lot as the season wore on and was good at conveying Blade's reluctant caring and his gruff exterior. I was especially impressed with Jill Wagner, who plays Kirsta Starr, Blade's spy in the House of Chthon. Wagner was equally convincing wearing a evening gown or kicking butt in blue jeans and a t-shirt. In the first half of the two-hour pilot episode, Wagner wears blue jeans and carries a gun. About halfway through, she shows up at a party wearing a spectacular white dress. Wow. She's a gorgeous gal. Of the series regulars, only Jessica Gower, who plays one of the key vampires, struck me as a little wooden.
I do have some plot issues. Emily Hirst plays Charlotte, a pure-blood vampire, born a vampire instead of being turned like most of the others. Hirst is 13 or so, and her character is supposed to be 200. Do pure blood vampires grow old, maybe at a slower pace than humans? The other pure blood vampires shown in the series are all adults of different ages. I don't really understand the concept. Another gripe: during the pilot, Krista has a sniper rifle loaded with silver-tipped ammo aimed at Marcus Van Sciver's head, but instead of just blasting him, she insists on taunting him over a two-way radio she's left behind. Of course, we know what that means...
Quibbles aside, I enjoyed the show a lot, and I am sorry it only lasted one season. I would like to know what happens next. Maybe if enough people buy this DVD of the pilot episode, we can get a few direct-to-DVD movies made featuring the same cast.

The Long, Long Trailer (1954) Review

The Long, Long Trailer (1954)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Directed by Vincent Minelli, this comedy, starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez, was filmed at the height of the popularity of their television show, "I Love Lucy". In this film, Lucy was never funnier, and Desi was never better as her comedic foil.
The plot is surprisingly simple. Tacy Collins (Lucille Ball) and Nicholas Carlos Collini (Desi Arnez) are about to be married. Tacy persuades him that having a trailer home would be ideal, since he has the type of job that takes him away so often. This way, she could always be there to take care of him no matter where he is working, as their home would always go with him, wherever he may be. Nicky buys into her logic, and the rest is history.
They purchase a top of the line trailer home, a new car to tow it, and get married. Tacy and Nicky then hit the road and have a number of very funny adventures. They will have you belly laughing, as the personas of their film characters do not differ greatly from that of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, the characters of their television show. If it ain't broke, why fix it?
Keenan Wynn has a small role as a traffic control cop whose path briefly crosses theirs. Don't blink, or you may miss him. Some of the footage is shot in gorgeous Yosemite National Park and the cinematography is a treat, with beautiful scenic vistas replete with mountain views.
Not only was this film a hit for MGM in 1954 and the best grossing comedy of the year, but it was also their best grossing comedy to date, beating MGM's previous record holder, "Father of the Bride". If you are a fan of Lucy and Desi, or if you simply want a film that would be fun for the whole family, you cannot go wrong in choosing this one.

Hopalong Cassidy: Complete Collection Review

Hopalong Cassidy: Complete Collection

This item features 10 Hopalong Cassidy films from 1938 thru 1940, including the following titles (most of which appear on DVD for the first time):
Bar Twenty Justice (1938)
The Frontiersmen (1938)
In Old Mexico (1938)
Pride of the West (1938)
Law of the Pampas (1939)
Renegade Trail (1939)
Range War (1939)
Silver On the Sage (1939)
Sunset trail (1939)
Santa Fe Marshall (1940)
Also included in this 12 disc set are all 52 of the Hopalong Cassidy television shows which aired between 1952 and 1954. These 26 minute episodes include the 12 shows which were edited versions of the final 12 Hopalong Cassidy films produced by William Boyd between 1946 and 1948 along with the 40 episodes produced exclusively for TV in 1952 and 1954.
This item also includes the bonus documentary, "Public Hero #1". Produced by Starz Western Channel, it traces the life and career of William Boyd as well as the development of the Hopalong Cassidy character in both print and film. Dennis Weaver narrates with extensive comments from Hoppy's widow, Grace Bradley Boyd and film critic Leonard Maltin. This documentary is featured on Disc #4 and I highly recommend that it be viewed before watching the films and TV episodes.
The technical quality of all the films and television episodes is EXCELLENT: sharp picture, clear audio.
Each of the 12 discs are individually packaged in a keepsake case, each one featuring a different photo of Hoppy on the front.
Altogether you get over 35 hours of enjoyable, exciting family entertainment which I found well worth the purchase price which came to about $2 per hour.
I highly recommend this item to all fans of Hopalong Cassidy, westerns and classic film and television.

10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America (History Channel) (2006)
Average Reviews:

I love these documentaries. I don't quite understand the viewpoint of the other review. I work in the film industry and these docs are extremely well made by the best directors in documentary filmmaking.
They picked days in history that lead up to great events - turning points. They highlighted parts of our history that we rarely hear about in school or otherwise and I found them fascinating. My husband and I watched them together and would have wonderful discussions afterward. The subject matter was thought provoking and I felt showed how events from our past affect the future.
Each one was done in a different style with a different director. It seemed to me that content dictated the each style - very well executed. I highly recommend these films. Bravo!

Offering a fresh perspective on the American experience, 10 acclaimed documentary filmmakers direct ten pivotal moments in United States history and the often unexpected changes they triggered. These critical but unsung pieces of history include a local rebellion that inspired a national constitution, bullets fired in Buffalo, New York, and even a crooner from Memphis who couldn't stand still. These are just a few of the fascinating subjects explored in 10 DAYS THAT UNEXPECTEDLY CHANGED AMERICA--10 riveting one-hour documentaries by 10 award-winning independent filmmakers. Together, the documentaries represent compelling stories about less well known events that serve as a lens with which to view the range of the American experience. From the first massacre of Native Americans to the single bloodiest day in American history, from a courtroom battle of science vs. religion that still rages today to the racial murders that led to the Voting Rights Act, these are the events that tested America's soul and forged her destiny.

The Twilight Zone: Long Distance Call/ I Sing The Body Electric (1959) Review

The Twilight Zone: Long Distance Call/ I Sing The Body Electric (1959)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I SING THE BODY ELECTRIC was Ray Bradbury's sole contribution to the "Twilight Zone." One of the more subtle episodes, this story is strong on characterization and reaches out on an emotional level rather than to any notion of scientific curiosity of the introduction of a robot grandmother, beautifully played by Josephine Hutchinson, into a family (including Veronica Cartwright). This is a very good episode and is one of my favorites. LONG DISTANCE CALL written by Charles Beaumont and William Idelson is one of the six episodes recorded directly to videotape instead of being photographed on film. The story concerns a little boy played by Billy Mumy who communicates with his dead grandmother over his toy phone. It examines our attachment to those we love and what emotional price we sometimes must pay for that love.

Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre -The Complete Collection Gift Set (1982) Review

Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre -The Complete Collection Gift Set (1982)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After years of waiting, Faerie Tale Theatre fans can finally own the series on DVD. Shelley Duvall's series originally appeared on Showtime 20 years ago and featured well-known and rising stars of the time. The series' enthusiastic interpretations of beloved fairy tales has made it a cult classic. Better yet, the DVD prices are affordable, especially after the high prices the used VHS copies have been earning in recent years.
The collection package featured here contains all of the 26 fairy tales created for the series. The original series had an extra special, called Grimm Party, that was a retrospective of the series with various casts and Shelley Duvall. Unfortunately, this episode has never been made available on VHS, laser disc, or DVD, not being included in licensing packages. While this might be a disappointing omission, it shouldn't lessen the thrill of finally having DVD editions of the 26 tales themselves at a great price.
Here's a list of all 26 episodes contained in this collection:
The Tale of the Frog Prince
Rumpelstilskin
Rapunzel
The Nightingale
Sleeping Beauty
Jack and the Beanstalk
Little Red Riding Hood
Hansel and Gretel
Goldilocks and the Three Bears
The Princess and the Pea
Pinocchio
Thumbelina
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Beauty and the Beast
The Boy Who Left Home to Find Out About the Shivers
The Three Little Pigs
The Snow Queen
The Pied Piper of Hamelin
Cinderella
Puss 'n Boots
The Emperor's New Clothes
Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp
The Princess Who Had Never Laughed
Rip Van Winkle
The Little Mermaid
The Dancing Princesses

The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat (1995) Review

The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat (1995)
Average Reviews:

no one likes to take chances on new things and unfortunately for this cartoon, it only ran for i think 2 years. this dvd is a nice look back at it, with some of the best episodes. its very nicely animated, a 30's 40's look animation with a nice soundtrack put in by the Club Foot Orchestra. The music is very retro and cool, very much like the cartoons of the 30's and 40's had in thier days. Yes, these are new cartoons made in the 1990's but they look so cool in the old style animation type drawings. Very surreal, i mean extremely surreal cartoons. they are extremely enjoyable. I wish they would have released the whole first season on dvd, and released a soundtrack cd. Youll like these felix cartoons if youre a fan, or just admire the early type of animation which i still think is the best.

Betty Boop, Vol. 1 Review

Betty Boop, Vol. 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review is based on Volume 1 of this Television Classics set of 3 volumes in total.
The title says BETTY BOOP 8 FULL LENGTH EPISODES 8 SHOWS ON 1 DVD. If you are like me, then you'll be under the impression you are getting 8 Betty Boop cartoons. This is NOT so! The first 5 are indeed Boop but the last 3 are various other cartoons. This DVD contains:
1 Henry - Betty leaves Henry in charge of her pet shop
2 Another Little King - The King joins Betty in her show
3 No! No! No! A Thousand Times No! - Someone attempts to woo Betty away from Freddie
4 Making Stars - Betty showcases future stars in her show
5 Is My Palm Read - Betty visits the fortune teller
6 Parrotville Old Folks - A cartoon about parrots
7 Happy Harmonies - An MGM cartoon about Spring
8 A Day At The Zoo - An a.a.p Merrie Melodies cartoon (Incidentally, this was the funniest out of all on this DVD)
This is a basic DVD that comes in a cardboard sleeve (i.e. no artwork), also there is no real 'Menu' to speak of...it just leads in to the list of the 8 cartoons. There is no 'Play All' option so you have to play each one individually. The sound is crisp and clear and the picture is as clear as it can be considering the age of the films. You DO however get the "film look" - the hairlines and black dots that appear from time to time throughout old films. Gives it that nostalgic feeling I think.
I decided to place this on here because considering that I felt cheated of 3 cartoons, I can't imagine it will be better on the second or third DVDs. Hope this helps.

Laurel and Hardy Classic Shorts (Volume 1) Review

Laurel and Hardy Classic Shorts (Volume 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Laurel and Hardy's best films were made at the Hal-Roach-Studios in the 1930's, because Stan Laurel wrote the scripts, directed the films, and Laurel & Hardy ad-libbed, created the comedy beyond the script as the cameras were rolling (50% was ad-libbed). This 10-volume set of talking-shorts (20-minute-films) is from the Hal-Roach-Studios. When L&H went to MGM, the big corporation, in the 1940's; other-people wrote the scripts, other-people directed, and L&H were not allowed to ad-lib.
L&H feature-films, their earliest full-length-talking-films (1-hour plus) made at the Hal-Roach-Studios are excellent too. I list these under the "comment"-button below; noting which are Hal-Roach films.
There are L&H silent-films in the public-domain made before L&H came to the Hal-Roach-Studios, which are not good, because they were made before the two became friends and teamed-up. They play different characters, and some films only have Laurel and not Hardy, or vice-versa. There are some excellent, L&H silent-films, which are not in the public-domain, and which were made at the Hal-Roach-Studios. These are on the DVD-series "The Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy"; about ten volumes. They are expensive on DVD. Many are on VHS cheap. You can find the titles on said DVD-series and then search VHS. Two excellent, L&H silent-short-films (20-min.) are "Big Business" and "Soup to Nuts" (Only a VHS search of "Big Business" brings it up).
On this DVD:
"The Music Box", 1932
Laurel and Hardy attempt to carry a piano up the longest flight of stairs you have ever seen. Good.
"County Hospital" 1932
Ollie is in the hospital. Stan tries to make him more comfortable with unexpected results. Later antics on their drive home from the hospital.
The comedy scenes in the hospital are excellent.
"The Live Ghost" 1934
Laurel and Hardy are shanghaied (kidnapped) onto a ship set to sail for distant lands. The sailors believe the ship is haunted.
"Twice Two", 1932
Laurel and Hardy marry each other's sister, who look like a female them.
I have also seen volume-10 of this talking-shorts-series, which also has 4-shorts. "The Hoose-Gow" was very good. "They go Boom" and "Unaccustomed As We Are" are pleasant. "The Chimp" is not believable for not using a real chimp.
Volume-5 has the short "Helpmates", which is my favorite.
All these talking-shorts are from the Hal-Roach-Studios; though all the shorts are not excellent. From the four volumes that I have purchased; it looks like they put at least one excellent short on each four-short DVD, two of the shorts will be pleasant, and one not good.
Check out the DVD: "Laurel & Hardy: The Essential Collection" here on Amazon, which I discovered in July 2011. This 10-disc set includes most of Laurel & Hardy's talkie shorts and features produced by Hal Roach between 1929 and 1940.
Under the "comment" button below; I categorize their films with a description of each, and some recommendations.

Hitler's Henchmen Review

Hitler's Henchmen
Average Reviews:

This is an excellent series, with a lot of hard-to-find footage and a wealth of data on the main people in Hitler's entourage. If you don't mind spending the money, then you won't be disappointed when you add this to your collection. The series focuses on the henchmen, not on Hitler himself. It does cover the relationships between the Fuhrer and his immediate subordinates.
I'd say this is reasonabe value for money.

Average Reviews:

This collection is a wonderful treat for any I Love Lucy fan. The episodes on this set are timeless and are definitely some of Lucy's best! You get the following episodes, plus a tape that's nearly an hour long featuring music clips from the show:
"Lucy & John Wayne" (aired 10/10/55)- After Lucy and Ethel stole John Wayne's footprints from Grauman's Chinese Theater, Ricky calls the Duke and asks him to make a replacement, but it's not that easy.
"Mr. & Mrs. TV Show" (aired 11/1/54)- When Lucy finds out that Ricky tried to decline a Mr. and Mrs. TV show just to keep her off of television, she sabotages what she thinks is a dress rehearsal of the show.
"Lucy & the Loving Cup" (aired 1/7/57)- Ricky is the host of a dinner honoring Johnny Longden and he has a loving cup to present to the jockey. To get back at Ricky for making fun of her new hat, Lucy puts the trophy on her head. The only problem is, she can't get it off.
"Lucy Tells the Truth" (aired 11/9/53)- Since Lucy lies a lot, the Mertzes and Ricky bet her that she can't go twenty-four hours without telling a lie. The result? She insults her friends and has to admit her age and the real color of her hair.
"Tennessee Bound" (aired 1/24/55)- Ricky gets arrested for speeding in Ernie Ford's hometown of Bent Fork, Tennessee. After Lucy gets sassy with the officer, he puts her, Ricky, Fred and Ethel behind bars. Guess who comes to the rescue?
"The Operetta" (aired 10/13/52)- Lucy's women's club wants to stage an operetta, but they're completely broke. So she writes postdated checks to the theatrical supply company, but when the checks bounce, they come and take back everything in the middle of the performance.
"Lucy Gets A Paris Gown" (aired 3/19/56)- Lucy pretends to be on a hunger strike until Ricky buys her a Paris gown. So he and Fred decide to get back at her by making outfits and hats for Lucy and Ethel out of burlap bags.
"Lucy Goes To the Hospital" (aired 1/19/53)- Ricky and the Mertzes rehearse their roles in taking Lucy to the hospital. When she announces that "this is it," chaos erupts. Later, Little Ricky is born.
"The Golf Game" (aired 5/17/54)- Lucy and Ethel are tired of sitting back and watching Ricky and Fred play golf all the time, so they decide to take up the game themselves. To discourage them, the guys come up with bizarre rules.
"Lucy Gets in Pictures" (aired 2/21/55)- Thanks to a director friend of Ricky's, Lucy finally lands a part in a movie. She plays a Ziegfeld-type showgirl who gets shot during her descent down a staircase. But Lucy's heavy headdress does her in long before the gun goes off.
