Little Rascals Vols. 3-4 (1955) Review

Little Rascals Vols. 3-4 (1955)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved "The Little Rascals" when I was growing up. I'm glad to see they have a nice mix of episodes with my favorite characters. Spanky, Alfalfa, Jackie, Buckwheat, Marianne, and Pete (the dog!) are all here!
If you are unfamiliar with the Little Rascals, it was a series of short comedies filmed in the 1920's and 1930's called "Our Gang". The films were about poor kids and their very funny escapades. (Note: there is racial stereotyping that was common at the time of filming, not that that is any excuse!) These were intended to be stand-alone films. In some films, the gang had parents. In others, they live in an orphanage. There were plenty of other inconsistencies like this from episode to episode. Hal Roach sold the original series to MGM, bought it back, and renamed it, "Hal Roach's Little Rascals". More episodes were filmed into the early 1940's. No episodes were ever produced for TV, but it started playing on TV in 1955 under the name, "The Little Rascals". Jackie Cooper played "Jackie". (Robert Blake played "Mickey", but not in any of these episodes.)
Here is an episode guide, with a tiny description:
Teacher's Pet: Jackie brags to a nice woman about the tricks they plan to play on the new teacher. Guess who their new teacher is?
School's Out: Jackie is worried that the new teacher, Miss Crabtree will get married and leave. So when the gang thinks she has a boyfriend, they try to discourage his interest.

Readin' And Writin': Brisbane tries to get kicked out of school after his mother reminds him that he can be president if he does well.
Spooky Hooky: Spanky and Alfalfa want to skip school and go to the circus, so they send Buckwheat and Porky to put a fake doctor's note on the teacher's desk. When they find out the teacher is taking the class to the circus, they do everything they can to get the note back.
Sprucin' Up: Spanky and Alfalfa show off to the new truant officer's daughter.
For Pete's Sake!: After Marianne's doll is destroyed by the local bully, the gang tries to get her a new one. They end up trading Pete, the dog, for a doll!

The Kid From Borneo: The gang decides that a wild man from Borneo wants to eat them up.
Dogs Is Dogs: Pete, the dog, ends up at the pound after he is accused of eating Mr. Brown's chickens.
The Pooch: Stymie steals a pie, but is forgiven when he gets the other kids' dogs from the dogcatcher.

Dog Heaven: Pete, the dog, is upset because Joe spent money on a girl rather than a promised dog collar. Pete saves the girl from drowning, but gets in trouble when Joe thinks Pete pushed her into the water.

The Munsters - Complete Second Season (1964) Review

The Munsters - Complete Second Season (1964)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a child growing up in the 70's and 80's, I used to come home from school and watch The Munsters. I was absolutely fascinated with this series. The characters were hilarious, and the scripts were excellent! Now, the complete second season, comes to DVD in a 3 disc set. It features all 32 episodes from The Munsters second and final season. Don't forget about the 4 A&E Bios as bonus features! The 4 A&E Bios will be about, The Munsters, "America's First Family of Fright", Fred Gwynne, "More Than a Munster", Yvonne DeCarlo, "Gilded Lily", and Al Lewis, "Forever Grandpa". All packaged, in a Herman Munster head.
Take a good close look at Fred Gwynne's portrayal of Herman Munster. You will see that Herman get's more and more child-like, especially in "Prehistoric Munster", and "The Musician". Herman has now developed a very large booming laugh, the occasional temper-tantrums, and his always popular catchphrases, "Darn, Darn, Darn!!!" and "I'll kill 'em, I'll kill 'em, I'll kill 'em!!!"
Also, take a careful look at Al Lewis' sideburns. In the early episodes of Season 2, ("Herman's Child Psychology," "Herman the Master Spy," & "Bronco-Bustin' Munster") His sideburns were small, but take a look at the episodes called "Cyrano de Munster," "A Visit from Johann", and "Eddie's Brother", you will see that Al shaved much lower, and almost had some sort of a beard going on. A very neat trait for Grandpa to have!
Now, if you've only seen Season 2 episodes from TVLand, then you don't know what the original Season 2 theme is supposed to sound like. The original Season 2 theme of The Munsters is supposed to stop after Butch Patrick's name is shown. More theme music starts again when you see "Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher". That's the way it's supposed to be because when The Munsters originally aired on CBS, commercials used to be in that break between themes. TVLand edited the theme into one long version. The TVLand version, is incorrect. The DVD version, is correct.
Also, don't be shocked if some episodes do not feature the crashing door sound. That's the way it was originally supposed to be, because the producers (Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher) never intended for their to be a crash sound, but later added it to have more of an effect when you would see Herman come through the doors.
The box itself can also be a challenge to handle. What I have found to be handy, is just leave the inner "head" out of the original box.
The last three issues I would like to address, is space of episodes on the discs, B&W film turning sepia, and the audio quality of "Cyrano de Munster."
There are 32 half-hour episodes on this set, and four 40 minute biographies. If you have 3 double-sided discs, why not use the space appropriately? The episodes should have been spaced in this manner, seven episodes on Disc 1 A, and Disc 1 B, then 6 episodes on Disc 2 A, Disc 2 B, and Disc 3 A. Then place the four 40 minute biographies on Disc 3 B.
There is also a visible problem with some episodes turning sepia. Not all the episodes have their original rich B&W format. Some episodes have a yellow-brown tint that is visible by turning up the color on your television set. The only episode with real B&W, is "The Musician."
"Cyrano de Munster," probably has the worst audio quality of any "Munsters" episode. There is a light crackle sound that is continuous from about half-way through the episode, all the way to the start of the closing theme. It's annoying to hear "snap, crackle, and pop" for 10 minutes.DVD info for The Munsters The Complete Second Season

Little Rascals, Vol. 1 & 2 Review

Little Rascals, Vol. 1 and 2
Average Reviews:

I grew up with TV (the old, fuzzy black & white kind). One of my fondest memories was of watching The Little Rascals after school. When the restored versions showed up on VHS tape, I immediately bought several, but the others soon disappeared from the store shelves. I discovered and bought this double DVD set and LOVED the restored quality of picture and sound! My childhood memories came flooding back to me, and made me hunger for more. I can only hope that the rest of the series will be released also, and soon! Any lovers of The Little Rascals will appreciate the great quality of this set. Don't be misled by earlier cheap releases of The Little Rascals DVD's. This one is THE one to get!

The Real McCoys: Complete Season 1 Review

The Real McCoys: Complete Season 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Be Forewarned---- These episodes of one of TV's true Classic Shows are, except for the pilot, EDITED-----trimmed, chopped---BUTCHERED! Can you imagine?--in this day and age of state-of-the-art technology--- a DVD company resorts to using materials that are CUT by THREE MINUTES of
running time each?? And that's 3 minutes out of a 25-minute show that's missing, which I would say affects the dramatic shape of the show, wouldn't you?
I wrote to Mr. Stanley Moger at SFM Entertainment (smoger@sfment.com)
and received a reply which mentioned the difficulties in licensing
these old syndicated shows; apparently they were unable
(or unwilling) to explore every possible source, and decided to
settle for a complete run of the show that was in fine visual
condition but had been EDITED for TV; so they chose higher visual
quality over content, which I disagree with...to the point that I
doubt I will be buying any future seasons of the show, as much as it pains me.
As to the show itself---Walter Brennan is AWESOME! What an actor,
who totally inhabits the character of Amos McCoy in every aspect of
his personality---from incredibly tender to downright terrifying at
times! He is utterly believable, and one can scarcely imagine that
he is an actor delivering memorized dialogue---he seems to be living
the part in real life. Occasionally, however, as the 1st season progressed, a distinct element of caricature began to creep into some
of the more overtly comedic episodes. But hilarious dialogue always abounds---in one episode, Kate prepares a fancy chicken dish--
"Coq au Vin", she says..."It's a chicken cooked in wine", to which Grandpa responds with the immortal line: "Well, I ain't gonna eat no chicken that has to get LIQUORED-UP to get the courage to come out here....'! [HAW!]
I might point out a couple of stand-out shows from the premiere
season; the "McCoys" is, sadly, the sort of show that would be deemed "clueless" and "non-progressive" in today's pathetically
PC society; Grandpa McCoy is, shall we say, decidely "old-world"
in his attitudes. Oddly, though, the most moving episodes for me
centered on Kate, beautifully portrayed by Kathleen Nolan, and the conflicts she encounters between the "men-folk's" old-world outlook
and her desire to maintain her dignity as a woman.
"Kate's Dress" is a remarkable tale of Grandpa and Luke's decision
to use the "cookie jar" money they've saved for a new gun to instead
buy a new dress for Kate, since she has been asked to join the local PTA. In their childish enthusiasm to show Kate their good intentions, the men unknowingly create a custom-made monstrosity with which to surprise her. Her reaction and ultimate decision regarding the dress takes this epsisode into an oddly dark and slightly troubling realm, which is nonetheless very moving. Talk about a clash of cultures!
"Kate's Career" is another show wherein Kate forces the men to
confront and deal with their EXTREMELY conservative views regarding
the role of women in society, with very satisfying dramatic results--even a little role-reversal for Grandpa himself at the end!
"The Goodys Come to Town" is another show that brings the men-folk's treatment of women into question, as Luke boorishly fawns over an old flame of his who comes to town for a visit. Ultimately it is Kate
who must rise above the fray in a subservient yet dignified way---and wouldn't you know it?----that's EXACTLY what it takes to show the men
how crude and thoughtless they've been acting. And Walter Brennan's
moment of realization and apology near the end will surely bring a
tear to your eye. [Interesting to note that Luke's former girl-friend
in this show is played by Nora Hayden, who later became the author of
a somewhat notorious "How-To" manual in the 1970's, as well as the
guru of the "Dynamite Health Milk-Shake" business].
The entire cast of the "McCoys" is fine; Tony Martinez is great fun
and very charming as farm-hand Pepino; the knee-jerk PC police can
rest assured that there is no racial stereotyping here, since Grandpa
is generally intolerant of EVERYONE; in fact, Pepino usually seems to
be several steps ahead of everyone else in the family (the late Mr. Martinez was a band-leader and prolific song-writer; he played the
role of Sancho Panza in "Man of La Mancha" for over 20 years onstage
---I saw him in Chicago in March of 1968). Praise also to the
delightful Madge Blake and the fine old comic Andy Clyde for their continuing roles as the McCoy's neighbors the McMichaels.
BUT WHAT CAN"T WE SEE THESE SHOWS PRESERVED IN THEIR ORIGINAL, UNCUT
FORM? C'MON, SFM Entertainment-----get ahold of the series UNCUT and
RE-DO your dvd sets! That would be a far more fitting way to offer
this classic series to the public.

Our Gang - Little Rascals Greatest Hits (1933) Review

Our Gang - Little Rascals Greatest Hits (1933)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Good collection of Rascals shorts. "Shrimps For A day" is the classic tale of Spanky and two midgets (Olive and Dick Brasno) who lead a kiddie revolt against a tyrannical orphanage owner. If seen in childhood, it will stay in your mind forever! "Hi Neighbor" and "Fly My Kite" are great, but easily available elsewhere (they seem to be on almost every Our Gang DVD). "Beginner's Luck" is a howl-fest about Spanky's misadventures at a kiddie talent show. Look for Alfalfa's debut in this one as well as the Five cabin Kids, a talented group of Black children who were quite popular at the time. Check the kiddie imitation of Louis Armstrong!
Then there's "The Kid From Borneo." One of the less "politically correct" Rascal epics, modern Black viewers may not take well to the story of the children's encounter with a Black "jungle savage". Stymie (of all people) is given lines referring to the title character as a "sissy cannibal" and a "gorilla ape." However, it does have moments of real humor and contains some great chase scenes. One has to really "leave your brains at the door" to enjoy this one and remember that the positive racial aspects of the Rascals far outweigh the negative, given the times that they were made. Personally, my reaction to the film veers between cringing and laughter, although I've seen far worse.
That aside, the transfers vary and youmay have to turn up the brightness on your tv to enjoy this set. But overall, a good collection, especially for longtime fans.

Home Improvement - The Complete Second Season (1991) Review

Home Improvement - The Complete Second Season (1991)

I have loved "Home Improvement" ever since I was seven years old,and I think that everyone was excited to see the first four seasons of HI being released on DVD. Truth be told, while shows like "Home Improvement" really do not get made that much anymore,HI is a good reminder of what good television was about back in the early 90's (which was when this show aired)--and this DVD set is surely to bring back good memories, laughter, and entertainment for all fans of "Home Improvement" who purchased this set.
What you have right here is the second season for "Home Improvement"--every second of every episode from the second season of HI,on a three disc set. And while the first season of "Home Improvement" may be the ultimate season of the show, the season of the show that is displayed here is both funny and strong in several ways. This DVD set shows all of the challenges that Tim Taylor (Tim Allen)and his wife Jill (Patricia Richardson)faced as parents, with their oldest children Brad (Zachary Ty Bryan) and Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas)going through puberty, while their youngest son Mark (Tarah Noah Smith),who, while he may not being going through puberty, happens to be a target of both Brad and Randy (which follows hillarious results that are displayed in pretty much every episode that is here). There are several other highlights here--"Overreactive Glance" finds Jill and her friend Karen giving Tim a hard time about looking at other women, even if it happens to be just an accident (Debbe Dunning, who was the "Tool Time Girl" once Pamela Anderson had left the show, even made a guest appearance on this episode),"Howards End" shows how Brad and Randy would do anything to get out of trouble and the problems that can come along with having your first girlfriend, while "The Great Race" (which,as a matter of fact, was the last episode of the second season of "Home Improvement")shows how Tim Taylor knew how to be a good person--while he was getting revenge towards another person at the same time!!!! I won't give away everything that is too be found here, but if you miss the days from when "Home Improvement" was on,and enjoy a good laugh and nostalgia every once in a while, this DVD set is for you to own.
My only complaint is that the only bonus feature here is called "Loose Screws Part 2",which takes ten of the funniest moments from some of the episodes that were included in this DVD set. While the second segment of "Loose Screws" (which takes off on where the first segment of "Loose Screws" on the DVD set for the complete first season of this show)is as interesting as it is funny, this set would have been just a little bit better if there was a behind the scenes segment for this show,or maybe even some previously unreleased scenes for some of the episodes that were included here. But hey--with the first four seasons of this show being available on DVD as of now and with only four more DVD sets for this show to go (this show ran for eight seasons),there definitely will be more room for more extra feautures on future DVD sets of "Home Improvement". The producers of this show have a good start for not only this DVD set,but also for the other three sets of this show that have been released on DVD.
Overall, one of the best television series to be released in its complete season on DVD,and I look forward for the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eigth season of "Home Improvement" seeing the light of day on DVD,as well. As someone else mentioned............there are two words that are appropriate for this DVD set........MORE POWER!!!!!!!
