(More customer reviews)Any Curly short pre-1944 or so is great but the best are these early shorts where the boys are still young enough to pull off some great violence and sight gags.
"The Woman haters" is their first Columbia short and Curly is actually referred to as jackie. The episode is done 100% in rhyme or song which turns a lout of people off but I think is fabulous. The Boys become Members of the Woman Hater's Club but Larry secretly marries a girl and the boys go wild on a train. Then ending with the boys singing togehter and smacking in rhyme is classic.
"Three Little Pigskins" the boys are mistaken for 3 football heroes by gangsters and then have to actually play a game to disastrous results. Co-stars a young Lucille Ball.
"Punch Drunks" is the first in what would be a long running theme in Stooges plots...Curly going nuts when he hears, sees, or smells something. In this case he goes nuts when he hears "pop goes the WEasel". Moe makes a boxer out of him and takes him to the title. A Classic!
"Men In Black" Parody of "Men in White" a popular drama of the day. This short was nominated, but did not win, an Academy award. The boys are three dimwit doctor who go on a rampage in a hospital. Contains some of the greatest lines and sight gags of any Stooges short. "Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard!"
"A Plumbing We Will Go" The stooges pose as plumbers and are hired to fix a leak in a fancy mansion. They wind up crossing the electrical system with the plumbing and generally ruin the place. To escape the wrath of the homeowners the stooges escape through a magicians trap door.
"Micro-phonies" A later Curly short. Curly is mistaken for "Senorita Cucaracha" a singer who Curly mimicked. The boys show up in their disguises to "sing" at a Mrs. Bixby's party but run into trouble when Moe smashes the record Curly Lip-syncs to over Curly's head. The real singer tries to help by singing from behind a curtain while Curly mimics, but she is discovered and the stooges exit to a hail of phonograph records.
All in all one of the best Curly Collections

3 Stooges: Idiots Deluxe (1945) Review

(More customer reviews)Ya know, the only reason this tape isn't 5 stars is for the fact that there are even better ones than these classics. These are 3 of my FAVORITE episodes, but I just can't bring myself to saying it's top-notch stooges (Such as the movie "A Plumbing We Will Go)
The first episode, "I Can Hardly Wait", is, in my opinion...the funniest episode on the tape. It starts off with Larry, Moe, and Curly, as defense workers, coming home and making dinner. There are the usual antics while preparing the food, which are funny, but not even as close as to what happens next. Moe and Larry split a ham and an egg, and leave Curly with a full egg shell and a whole bone. (They make it sound as if their being generous to the poor guy.) Curly, being Curly, believes them and attempts to eat the bone, cracking his tooth. It all results in Curly moaning and groaning and keeping Moe and Larry from sleeping. They try several "home remedies" (Hilarious) but when they fail, they take him to the dentist. I'll leave the ending out, as to not to spoil the funny scene at the end. Fans, this video is almost worth the price just for this episode.
Next is "Idiots De Luxe" which is funny, I would say the 2'nd best. I remember seeing this short when I was very little, and loving it. Curly and Larry are prosecuting Moe in court for "attempted murder". It then goes back in the past, where Moe is a nervous wreck and Curly and Larry take him for a trip to the woods for peace and quiet. It ends up they have the company of a bear in their cabin, who eats their food and gives them all quite a scare. This is funny episode, and I especially like Larry in it, he seems to have more energy and has many more lines. Great episode!
Last is the worst episode on the tape, but still very amusing, "Idle Roomers". Moe, Larry, and Curly are hotel workers who, while cleaning a room, find a wearwolf-guy prowling around. The thing is, whenever this wearwolf-guy hears music, he goes crazy! (Of course he hears music more than once and goes totally crazy on the 3 guys) It's a very funny episode, but I didn't laugh out loud many times, if...at all.
All together, you HAVE to buy this tape. It's one of the few Columbia House videos of the Stooges that have all 3 episodes on it very good. (They try to spread all the GREAT episodes out on different tapes.) But for this one...all 3 are wonderful and it is DEFINETLY worth the price. Get this one now fans, and hurry! -Stooge Fan

3 Stooges: Movie Maniacs (1936) Review

(More customer reviews)For those who want a bit more than a television commercial to understand why the Three Stooges are priceless, the trio of comedy shorts the boys made for Columbia collected on this videotape can help make the case:
"Movie Maniacs" is a short from 1936 that starts with the Stooges stowing away on a train bound for Hollywood. There are a couple of good routines involving making breakfast and ironing their clothes before the boys arrive at Carnation Pictures are mistaken for studio executives. This means that they can provide their collective 2 cents with regards to the love scene being filmed by a director (named Swinehardt). The result is that everybody quits and Curly has to play the female lead romanced by Larry, while Moe directs. Somehow this classic ends up with the boys being chased by a lion in a car, which makes perfect sense in the world of the Stooges.
"Dutiful But Dumb" is a 1941 effort with a movie connection in that the Stooges are photographers for "Whack" magazine, out to get a picture of movie star Percival De Pusyter and his new bride. This does not go well, which is why the boys end up in Vulgaria, where shooting photographs gets you shot by a firing squad. Fortunately Curly knows about a rule of international law regarding last smokes. The best bit in this one has Curly crawling inside a large radio to broadcast the news, but his encounter with the oyster in his oyster soup is almost as good. The bits have little to do with the plot, but that is par for the course with these two-reelers.
"Oily to Bed, Oily to Rise" is a 1939 short where the boys start off working on a farm for food. This one actually has a running gag in that every time Curly wishes for something, it comes to pass. This gets all mixed up with the fact that some crooks are buying land from poor farmers who do not know that their land sits on oil. The Stooges come to the rescue of a kindly window and her three daughters (April, May, and June), and the rescuing actually works out. Not a classic, but close.
Overall, this trio of Stooges comedies makes for one of the better video collections in this series. You have one classic and two above average efforts from the Moe-Larry-Curly period, and several great bits by Curly, which is always a plus.

F Troop (Television Favorites Compilation) (1965) Review

(More customer reviews)Joining televisions other military comedies of the day was this overlooked gem. The thing that set "F Troop" apart from "Hogan's Heroes" and "McHale's Navy" was the fact that, while not politically correct, it was fair. The brave men of Fort Courage were as inept, sometimes moreso, than the Indian tribes of the area.
Led with a gentle hand by Captain Wilton Parmenter (Ken Berry), F Troop had a bugler who couldn't bugle, a soldier in the guard tower who couldn't see, and a cannon that usually caused damage to the fort when fired. He was ably assisted by Sgt. O'Roarke (Forrest Tucker) and Corporal Agarn (Larry Storch). Berry was adept at physical comedy, much like Dick Van Dyke he came from a dancing background. Storch was an over-the-top stand-up comic whose routine often lent itself to some fun moments in the show. Tucker was the stalwart Marshal Dillon type. Although a con-man, he had a soft spot for both Agarn and the Captain.
This collection gathers six episodes, 3 color and 3 black/white. The transfers are generally very good with minimal screen noise. The black and white episodes look a bit better, but only because of the oversaturated color of the other episodes.
Overall, for the price this is a great piece of nostagic entertainment.

This is a 2 video set containing: The Electric House; The Boat; The Paleface; The Frozen North; The Playhouse; Cops. It was delightful. I showed some of these to my 13 year old son and made a new Buster Keaton fan.
