Back in the day, when Cartoon Network was in their prime, they had a killer lineup every Friday night. This included Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Cow and Chicken, Johnny Bravo, and my personal favorite, a show about a cowardly dog named Courage. I was hooked from the first episode I ever watched, which featured the little black duckling. This show had it all. Great stories were first and foremost. They were like mini-films. The stories were ridiculous, but it didn't matter because they were treated in such an epic way. The animation was great, and the backgrounds were out of this world. As much as I liked Dexter and Powerpuff Girls, their backgrounds were VERY simplistic. It was refreshing to see the style used for Courage, where the backgrounds displayed so much detail and atmosphere, which drew you in to the story all the more. As for Courage himself, true, he was a coward, but in each episode, he had to find a way to put that all aside to save his owners, Muriel and Eustace. Courage was the kind of hero you could relate to. He didn't wanna be the hero, and if you had to go up against some of the crazy stuff he did, you wouldn't wanna be either. But there was something about the dog's anxious disposition and terrified personality that made him a likeable character. He didn't talk much, but what he said mattered. "I know I'm not gonna like this" was his battle cry when it came time for action. Then he would pull out some off-the-wall prop or devise some master plan to save the day, and things would go back to normal again, except for the fact that most of the time, the family house was destroyed by the end of the episode.
This is one of the best cartoon series ever made. It's timeless and truly fun to watch. I'm ordering a copy, and so should everyone else who enjoys good storytelling.
P.S.- It's too bad all the negative reviews for a DIFFERENT DVD release are showing up here. Those are for the Australian release, not this one.

Astro Boy - The Complete Series (2004) Review

Astro Boy - The Complete Series (2004)

PLEASE, stop complaining that this isn't the original Astro Boy series. This has to be the most absurd basis for a review I've ever read. It's like yelling at a waiter for bringing you EXACTLY WHAT YOU ORDERED even though in your mind you really wanted something else. It's insane. You're not even reviewing the DVD set that this section is reserved for. You're just mad because you weren't paying attention. It's not like Amazon fooled you. If you had bothered to read the DVD specs in the first place, you would have realized that this set is from the 2003 TV series (which is beautiful and true to the "original" 1963-66 Japanese series). So, open your eyes next time. Don't bash it before you've seen it.
Any "true" Astro Boy fan will be happy to own this collection.

Fat Albert's Greatest Hits The Ultimate Collection (1972) Review

Fat Albert's Greatest Hits The Ultimate Collection (1972)
Average Reviews:

Very happy to hear Fat Albert is coming out on DVD. I grew up on this wholesome show that taught me values and how not to look down on somebody who is different. Not easy for a white boy from Georgia to do. Thanks Bill, I love that big guy. :)
The feeling I get when watching them has never left me. Recently I found a copy of the Christmas special and it put tears in my eyes. I simply can't wait to get all of these on DVD. Like many of my other favorite shows, it's overwelming emotionally that these are coming to DVD.
This is a "best of" set featuring 20 favorites based on internet research thru search engines. But there's some confusion as to whether all episodes will be realised as Season sets or in a random manner like this set. It's hard to believe, but at this point I'm avoiding this one so I don't risk having to rebuy some of these next year.
The company UrbanWorks Entertainment says that they have acquired the rights to most of the episodes including the specials done for Halloween, Christmas and Easter but excluding the 1969 pilot episode "Hey, Hey, Hey, It's Fat Albert" that only aired once and was owned by NBC not CBS which aired the rest of the series. They will begin releasing all of them in 2005. So it just sounds like this is an expensive "teaser". :(
I say wait. Personally I'll have to condition myself not to order this or pick it up if I see it in the store. Wish me luck. ;)
And Hey, Hey, Hey! Have a happy day! :D

The Huckleberry Hound Show - Vol. 1 (1958) Review

The Huckleberry Hound Show - Vol. 1 (1958)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From 1958 comes the first cartoon to win an Emmy award, the second effort of the pioneering duo Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, and one of the best-loved cartoons of all time. My title is a line from the theme song of the original black and white Kellogg's sponsored show with Cornelius Rooster from Kellogg's Corn Flakes in the opening scene, which is reconstructed in the "Special Features" section. Hanna-Barbera has gone all out on this collection, even including a lithoed animation cel. This set barely fits the "Golden Collection" format, however; the four disc pack barely fits in the sleeve and the fourth DVD is double sided to hold all the special features.
Following the Ruff and Reddy Show, this was Hanna-Barbera's second foray into bringing cartoons to the small screen using limited animation to meet the much smaller budget for TV shows. Hence, it plays like radio, with Don Messick narrating and Daws Butler voicing a cornocopia of characters, whose dialogue he called "pure butter." Visually, the show is also a feast, if a minimalist one, with clean, bright colors, modern background design, witty writing and such unforgettable stars as Huck, Yogi, Boo Boo, Pixie and Dixie and Mr. Jinks.
Here's the ground-breaking show that established Hanna-Barbera, set the standard for TV 'toons, and inspired the retro look of Cartoon Network's "Two Stupid Dogs," Dexter's Lab," and "Johnny Bravo," designed as cartoon tributes by such animators as Genndy Tartakovsky and Scott Shaw who love the look of classic H-B. When this show aired in its 6:30 PM time slot in New York, adults and college kids made up a large percentage of its 16 million viewers, and I can imaging kids taking to Huck as they have to another H-B hound, Scooby Doo.
Includes all 26 episodes of Season One in color, each consisting of a Yogi, Huck, and Pixie and Dixie cartoon, as follows (reruns are built in, and these episodes are ready to go to show as "cartoons without cable":
1. Yogi Bear's Big Break/ Cousin Tex/ Huckleberry Hound Meets Wee Willie
2. Slumber Party Smarty/ Judo Jack/ Lion-Hearted Huck
3. Pie-Pirates/ Kit-Kat-Kit/ Tricky-Trapper

9. Baffled Bear/ The Ghost with the Most/ Two Corny Crows
10. The Brave Little Brave/ The Ace of Space/ Huckleberry Hound Meets Wee Willie

Astro Boy - Ultra Collector's Edition DVD Set 1 Review

Astro Boy - Ultra Collector's Edition DVD Set 1
Average Reviews:

Largely unseen for over 30 years, most current audiences only know Astro Boy by its reputation and through various remakes. While contemporary anime may have greater technical polish, there's energy, imagination and a surprising amount of humor to these shows which is still unmatched. The sad news is the english masters and negatives were destroyed ages ago. The good news is thanks to fans and collectors worldwide the first 52 episodes are all accounted for with video from the Japanese masters married to english audio from a variety of sources. In a few cases the sound may leave something to be desired, but that should only make us all the more thankful for a piece of TV history which was very nearly lost to us for all time. This beautifully packaged set of 11 single sided discs displays very handsomely. Extras include an interview with Fred Ladd and two episodes of Tetsuwan Atomu in Japanese with english subtitles (Episode #1 & 20) to allow comparison with its original version. Buy it, whether to relive Saturday mornings of a bygone era or to experience firsthand THE show which started the anime revolution.

Kimba, The White Lion, Volume 1-4 from Cartoon Classics (Set of 4) Review

Kimba, The White Lion, Volume 1-4 from Cartoon Classics (Set of 4)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Kimba the White Lion is such a great show, it's a real shame it has not been treated well on DVD. There are several things that need to be explained about these "Cartoon Classics" DVDs.
First, longtime fans of Kimba will be surprised that these episodes sound totally different than what they remember. These episodes do NOT have the original English soundtrack, made in 1966 with Billie Lou Watt as Kimba. These episodes have an English soundtrack made in 1993 with Yvonne Murray as Kimba. To be fair, though, it is this newer version that has been on TV worldwide over the last decade, and is on TV here in the US right now. Newer Kimba fans will likely want this version. (This is the same version of Kimba that was released on VHS some years back as "Kimba The Lion Prince". The full set of 4 DVDs has four episodes that were not on VHS, however.)
Are these episodes uncut? Well, yes and no. Each episode was shortened by at least 3 minutes by the producers of this 1993 version. These DVDs contain as much as is available for each episode, but if you have the feeling that something was cut out, you're right, and the missing material simply does not exist in this version of Kimba.
Now, the reason for the low star rating: These episodes have been transferred to DVD very poorly. There is no reason for this, since the 1993 masters were made on videotape from very beautiful Japanese originals. The picture on these DVDs is often "blown out", meaning that light-colored areas are too bright, and all detail is lost in them. Considering the coloration of the title character, this is a major problem.
Something not mentioned on Amazon's page is that all episodes can be played in either English or Spanish.
Kimba The White Lion is one of the greatest animated shows of all time. If you want the current version that's on TV, this is the only way to get it right now. Just be warned that the picture isn't going to be very good.

Gigantor - Boxed Set 1 (Episodes 1-26) Review

Gigantor - Boxed Set 1 (Episodes 1-26)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After the success of Astro Boy in both Japan and the United States, a new anime series was born. It's name was Tetsujin 28 or Iron Man 28. In 1965, it came to the states under the name Gigantor. Now, for the first time in 37 years, you can re-live the experience that drew a crowd of many children.
Despite the age of the material, Gigantor is quite amazing. At first, it sounds pretty simple. A 12-year-old boy named Jimmy Sparks pilot pilots a giant robot to help catch the bad guys. However, each episode has enough plot twists and action to keep any viewer glued to the screen. Following Jimmy Sparks on his adventures are other characters with odd names including Bob Brilliant, Inspector Blooper and Dick Strong. Even the villains have odd names like Cats Meow and Swami Tommy.
Keep in mind that this show was distributed before TV stations started having censorship laws so don't be surprised when you see someone smoking a cigarette. Also, there is one episode where Jimmy Sparks helps a bunch of cowboys by shooting at some indians so you might be offended by some of the racism in these episodes. My only problem with this show is the music. It sounds good, but do they always have to put the same melody into each song?
The extras (yes, there are extras) are on discs 1 and 4. The first disc features commentary by the original English director, Fred Lad, on episodes 3-5 which feature the villain The Spider. Lad mostly talks about how four voice actors did all these voices, but he does make some comments on how he Americanized it and why some changes were made. The extras on disc four include a lengthy interview with Fred Lad, an interview with an old anime historian (I don't know why they included this) and a biography on the original Japanese creator. I enjoyed the interview with Fred Lad since he has done lots of research on Tetsujin 28 including the sequels to it, but the anime historian interview feels like stating the obvious to all anime fans.
Overall, I enjoyed Gigantor and I think anyone can appreciate it, regardless of the fact that it is in black and white. Highly recommended.

The Flintstones - The Complete First Season (1960) Review

The Flintstones - The Complete First Season (1960)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before Matt Groening and pals introduced us to "The Simpsons," Joseph Barbera and William Hannah produced a little show called "The Flintstones." Season "1" was first aired on ABC during 1960 and has been syndicated in perpetuity throughout the known universe ever since.
Episode Guide:
(Screen Test) The Flagstones: Admittedly, I've never seen the screen test (discovered in 1993) and cannot even vouch for it's inclusion in the DVD set-one can only hope.
(1) The Flintstone Flyer: Barney invents a flying machine (the Barney Copter) which he later loses to his over-bearing best friend. The duo uses the machine to ditch their wives and go bowling, thus setting the stage for years of adventures.
(2) Hot Lips Hannigan: Fred relives his glory days as a singer in his high school band as he jams with an old pal.
(3) The Swimming Pool: Fred and Barney construct a pool spanning across their backyards...a hilarious power struggle ensues.
(4) No Help Wanted: Having cost his friend his job, Fred finds Barney a new job as a repo man. Enter Dino.
(5) The Split Personality: Following a blow to the noggin' Fred becomes his more refined alter, Frederick.
(6) The Monster from the Tar Pits: Gary Granite is filming in Bedrock and lucky Fred finds a part in the film..., as his stunt double.
(7) The Babysitters: Fred and Barney shirk their responsibilities and bring a baby to a friends house to watch the big fight. BYOB?
(8) At the Races: Fred and Barney rely on gambling for a quick-fix solution. Do you think they win?
(9) The Engagement Ring: Barney purchases a ring for Betty but Wilma discovers the ring and assumes it was for her... Instead of spending five minutes explaining the situation, Barney decides to enter a boxing contest with The Champ.
(10) Hollyrock, Here I Come: The girls come up with a winning slogan and a trip to Hollyrock. Lost without their better halves, Fred and Barney aren't far behind.
(11) The Golf Champion: Fred demonstrates his prowess at golf, earning a trophy. Barney, however, pesters his buddy as Fred neglected to pay his membership dues.
(12) The Sweepstakes Ticket: Both the guys and gals purchase lottery tickets unbeknown to their spouses. As they forever remain strapped for cash, I think you know how this one ends.
(13) The Drive-In: Fred and Barney secretly quit their jobs to fulfill a short-lived dream of business ownership. The gig is up when one of their attractive employees pays a visit to the Flintstone residence.
(14) The Prowler: Terrorized by a neighborhood prowler, Betty and Wilma decide to take Judo lessons, despite Fred's objections.

This is the one that fans of Kimba the White Lion have been waiting for! It contains the original theme music and voices from the 1965 version! The video releases of some Kimba episodes in the 1990s were disappointing, containing a new, somewhat boring theme tune, and different character voices. This box set is superb - all 52 episodes are fully restored, complete with the original soundtrack, and the discs are beautifully presented. It brought back wonderful memories, and the new generation just love the stories!
