As a former martial artist, I first watched this tape back in 1997 when my cousins wanted to rent it. If they hadn't, I may well have written it off, but I am so glad I didn't! Jason Frank, aka Tommy in the show, gives a great Karate lesson for kids, and it's plain to see in the video that he is a great instructor for kids! At the end of the video, he shows you a really cool kata that perhaps Jason developed himself, which incorporates every move he teaches throughout the tape.
For those who aren't so familiar with Jason Frank's accomplishments, he began training in martial arts when he was 4, and was already teaching the other kids when he was 12, so he has a lot of experience on the teaching end. He and a friend of his bought his first dojo when he was 18, and nowadays, Jason Frank owns all the Red Dragon Karate dojos, and still teaches sometimes at the one in Anaheim Hills. He currently holds the rank of 5th dan (5th degree black belt) at the age of 31, and considering the fact that 6th dan is the highest one can go in Karate if they are under 45 years old, that is amazing! Not only does Jason teach good basic moves in the video, but he also talks about the philosophies of martial arts and gives his own outlook on what it means to him. I bought this tape in 1999 when I saw it on a rack at a video store, and will soon be buying another copy for a little girl I know who wants to learn Karate. I would definitely recommend this tape, along with the tape made by Austin St. John (he played Jason in the show) to anyone just starting out in Karate or who thinks they might want to take it up.

The Twilight Zone - Collection 4 (1959)

Like the first 3 collections, this one has a great variety of episodes, and its fair share of A+ ones which are as fine as anything that has ever been shown on TV. Unlike the first 3 collections, this one has several rarely seen and/or double length episodes, and is even more of an acquired taste. Die-hard fans and collectors will want to own this set. Those exploring TZ might try one of the other 3 collections first. If you like, read my reviews of those as well.

For those of us in the know, all TZ episodes have been available on DVD for quite some time, but in 40-some odd volumes that contained 3 to 4 episodes each and left you broke after about 20 volumes. Now, As I write this, we are a couple months away from being able to own the entire Twilight Zone series in a collection of 5 box sets,... Has Image Entertainment finally given TZ fans something worth emptying their pockets for? You bet.
Okay, so they still haven't put the series in chronological order. Don't wait -- this will probably never happen. It's an anthology series and there is no continuity here that absolutely demands you have the episodes in order. But what Image has done is put 9 volumes in each box set (Vols. 1-9 are contained in Collection 1) and made the cases a little more compact. These are great cases, by the way, and the box isn't just something to throw away either. The episodes in Collection 1 are among the most memorable: "To Serve Man", "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet", "Time Enough At Last", "The Lonely", "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street", "The Invaders", and "It's A Good Life", to name only a few of the 35 episodes.
Quite simply, these releases (meaning not only Collection 1, but the 4 others) mean that you'll be able to own the series on DVD for [much less money than]it would cost you to buy the volumes individually...

Def Comedy Jam All-Stars Vol. 2 Review

Def Comedy Jam All-Stars Vol. 2

I initially bought this DVD because of Martin Lawrence. Ive seen alot of his films and thought they were funny. But i still thought him and will smith could not be the only black american comedians america has because in england all we have on terrestial TV(of black american comedy) are old re-runs of The Fresh Bel Air. So i purchased it wanting to discover more.In England we only have white comedy shows and although some of them are funny, I can not relate fully to them because of the cultural barrier between white english people and second generation african english culture.
In this DVD there are 3 shows:
One hosted by Martin Lawrence, the second by Chris Rock and the third Cedric the entertainer.
The first show is so funny all the comedians had me cracking up, and Bernie Mac had me in stitches.I would buy a DVD with just this show on it.
The second was OK but mostly due to the host Chris Rock. As the host he should get the audience fired up in anticpation. But he came and gave a below par performance. It was like he had not prepared for the show like he had just been drafted in at the last minute and did not want to be there. The comedians in this show were all different but i would have to say Dominique was the worst. Her set did not flow and had no relevance. I did not laugh once in fact i had to fast forward her a few times so that i did not cringe every time she talked.
Rudy Rush was quite good, he started good but did not follow through with the jokes. The other comedian was alright but his performance gained momentum as time went on. I basically only laughed at the end.
Now the show with Cedric the entertainer was sooooooo funny. I mean Cedric is such a joker. He upheld the whole show. The comedians in the show were good but Cedric was in a league of his own he had me laughing so many times, and he didn't mention sex once as many comedians in this series love to do.

My Favorite Martian - The Complete First Season (1963)

Okay, first, I have to admit that I haven't made it through all 37 shows in this set, so all I can say about the transfers is....so far, they are excellent. Other non-studio companies packaging television programs would learn a lot to follow the lead of Rhino. They include all intro and outro sequences, and are the full program, as originally broadcast.
The one thing that distracts from this being a 5 star set is the packaging. This is the worst packaging job I have seen yet of a season set. The single DVD plastic keep-case, with a hinged 2-DVD insert is just plain cheap. Not only that, it promotes the damage of the discs...including the fact that one of the dual-sided discs rests on the mount for the third disk (which is stored on the back flap of the case).
The insert is a simple cardboard one....no booklet detailing the different episodes, or giving any additional information. Just a list of the shows.
Also, a menu of the episode selections would have been greatly appreciated. The only choices on the main menu are "Play All" and "Scene Selections". In order to choose an episode, you must page through the "Scene Selections" and choose the beginning scene of the desired episode.
Another note....when an episode concludes, the viewer is not sent back to the menu, but instead, the next episode starts playing.
Rhino really gets an "A" for releasing this show, and for it's video transfers (not only the quality, but that they are in their entirety).
Unfortunately, they are prevented from getting 5 stars by their poor menu programming, and the packaging which doesn't protect the disks.
Still, if you are a fan of classic TV, this set is still well recommended.

The Twilight Zone - Collection 2 (1959)

The item you are viewing is the second in a series of 5 Twilight Zone DVD collections, each containing 9 volumes of 4 episodes each. ....
Not bad, eh? The only difference between the box set DVDs and the individual ones are the cases. They are better, in my opinion, because they are more compact and yet aren't those [inexpensive] cardboard things. You also get a nice box to house them in.
Onto the content. If you're a fan of only some of the episodes -- the most popular ones that people always talk about, chances are you should buy Collection 1 first (contains "To Serve Man", "Nightmare At 20,000 Feet", etc.). But there are definitely some classics contained in Collection 2. Among the 36 episodes (Volumes 10-18 of the individual DVDs) are:
--The After Hours: Anne Francis visits a department store's mysterious 9th floor. Didn't that mannequin just sell her a thimble?
--Living Doll: If you remember the TZ and don't remember "Talky Tina", there's something seriously wrong with you!
--The Obsolete Man: Has Burgess Meredith become obsolete?? This one has landed in the Fans' Top 15 Episodes.
--The Midnight Sun: The sun is inching closer and closer to Earth. That can only mean one thing... It's hot!
--A Hundred Yards Over the Rim: A man traveling with a wagon trains crosses over a rim in the Nevada desert in search of water, game and way to heal his son... but winds up in the Twilight Zone!
Complete Listing: A Hundred Yards Over the Rim, Once Upon a Time, The Last Flight, The Trouble With Templeton, Living Doll, The After Hours, The Dummy, The Fever, Mr. Denton on Doomsday, The Lateness of the Hour, The Sixteen-Millimeter Shrine, The Trade-Ins, A Quality of Mercy, Judgment Night, The Obsolete Man, The Purple Testament, In Praise of Pip, One For the Angels, The Arrival, The Man in the Bottle, A Kind of a Stopwatch, Escape Clause, Nervous Man in a Four Dollar Room, The Midnight Sun, And When the Sky Was Opened, In His Image (Hour-Long Show), The Last Night of a Jockey, The Mirror, The Old Man in the Cave, What You Need, What's in the Box, Death Ship (Hour-Long Show), I Shot an Arrow Into the Air, Still Valley

The Outer Limits: The Inheritors 1 and 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A US Army lieutenant (Steve Inhat) is shot in the head in some unnamed Southeast Asian War, but lives and develops some extraordinary mental abilities. The CIA (Robert Duval) investigates and discovers that there are three others, also shot in the head in the same war, who also survive and begin to display expanded mental capabilities. The metal used in the bullets proves to come from a meteor, and is honeycombed to suggest that something was present that leaked out into their brains. The leader develops the ability to manipulate the stock market and provides money for the others, although they have never met. One of the other men becomes a metallurgist although he's had no formalized training in the field; another disappears up the Amazon looking for rare plants; the final person becomes an electronics genius. When they come together they build a spaceship capable of reaching another star. The electronics genius holds the CIA at bay with a force-field while the leader convinces sick and lame children to accompany them on their trip. This is the best of the excellent Outer Limits stories. Where the writing on Twilight Zone was usually dark and somber, in this series and this particular epsiode the outcome is one of hope for the future.

Doctor Who: The Time Meddler (2008) Review

Doctor Who: The Time Meddler (2008)

Season Two.
Another amusing gem from the prolific Dennis Spooner. This is regarded as the first of the pseudo-historicals, and is one of my favourite season two stories.
I can never feel anything but sorrow for the Monk at the end of this story as he's left stranded. I know he was a rogue, as witnessed by his Tardis full of stolen art treasures, but he did help the ancient Britons build Stonehenge with the aid of his anti-gravitational lift, after all.
"Carry on" film star Peter Butterworth plays the part of the monk with amusing relish. I would have loved to have seen him as a regular recurring.....I hesitate to use the word villain, so I'll say character instead.
And by being "shades of grey" in temperament, as opposed to the "black and white" pantomine personality of another Time Lord renegade from the seventies and eighties, makes the Monk a far more interesting and entertaining character in the process.
Here's an example, when the Doctor asks him why he behaves the way he does, the Monk replies with glee,
"Doctor it's more fun my way...". No heavy intellectual reasoning, just, it's more fun. That made a refreshing change from the pretentious reasons of some other sci-fi shows. This story was the first for the series to undergo a format change, as the Doctor takes a more pro-active role, and the actions of the companions had a lesser impact on the outcome of the stories.
As for The Monk, he is the kind of character that would go back in time just for fun, and etch some contemporary comment on some ancient artifact just to give future archaeologists headaches.
Not an evil character as such, just extremely naughty.
Although there's no worlds to save, (just a particular time-line) and no companions die this is still an enjoyable slice of early Who.
From the season with the highest overall ratings ever.

The TARDIS seems emptier without Barbara and Ian - at least until the Doctor and Vicki discover that the astronaut Steven stowed away before they left Mechanus. Steven's skepticism toward time travel pushes the Doctor to confront him with living proof. Shortly after landing on a beach in England, they discover a Viking helmet, but Steve remains unconvinced. Instructing Steve and Vicki to wait with the TARDIS, the Doctor seeks further proof. Heedless of the Doctor's warning, Steven persuades Vicki to explore the cliffs above the beach, where they find an abandoned wristwatch. Meanwhile, the Doctor investigates a ruined monastery, where he encounters an electric toaster, a gramophone playing ecclesiastic chants, and a monk who traps him in an alcove. Eventually, the Doctor realizes that the famous Battle of Hastings is only a few weeks away. That should provide ample proof for Steven, but who is this mysterious monk, and what is his interest in the events of 1066?

This episode takes you to a planet where the crew of the Enterprise is supposed to relax. They do everything but..
Kirk and company are chased by the things they fear most. It's a planet who has a computer which can read people's most inner thoughts. It was interesting to see that McCoy came from a Southern background. Something I didn't know until watching the episode. It has a few tense moments...like McCoy getting jousted by a knight in armor. It was anther one of those supercomputers that alters reality thing....

This "Twilight Zone" tin box set certainly is missing some key episodes, but not a legitimate reason to rate this product one or two stars. The transfers are remastered and brilliant, there's nineteen good solid episodes in this five disc set, eack disc is placed securely in a thin plastic cover with a Twilight Zone designed tin box. In all actuality what you're getting here is the first five volumes that were previously released in 2001, these episodes were not specially chosen as favorites, they're already classics. One problem is that most of you may probably own all five seasons, for those of you not wanting to spend the dollars for the high priced full collection, this set is perfect for a small glance of entering another dimension, even though it is missing "To Serve Man" a.k.a. "The Menu", "Eye Of The Beholder", - can be found on volumes 8 & 43 for three dollars plus shipping from an Amazon seller, including other episodes for each vol... maybe not all the fans favorites here, but you gotta love "The Invaders", Agnes Moorehead gives a stunningly, intense acting performance without saying one single word. (five stars to raise the rating up for this quality product) edit update 5/23/11: the price for this set recently sky rocketed here at Amazon, why? probably for the collectable tin box version, the newer cardboard packaging of the same title is now available at the reasonable original price.

Dark Shadows: The Beginning, Collection 3 - Episodes 71-105 Review

Dark Shadows: The Beginning, Collection 3 - Episodes 71-105
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After months of sagging ratings, the fledgling soap opera Dark Shadows did, what in the words of its creator, Dan Curtis, no daytime drama had ever done: it went supernatural.
Following it's landmark premier in 1966, the first-ever gothic soap opera, Dark Shadows, settled into its afternoon time slot to haunt viewers with is unique blend of romance and psychological terror a la Jane Eyre. Unfortunately, viewer ship dwindled steadily, despite excellent stories and equally fine acting, which are clearly demonstrated in each boxed set of remastered DVD episodes from MPI Home Video.
The Beginning Set 1, reflecting the first 35 episodes of the series, introduced the characters and eerie atmosphere created by innovative sets and unforgettable original music that was the hallmark of the show for its five-year run; and The Beginning Set 2, which collected the next 35 episodes, built on that foundation by further developing the main characters and adding some new ones.
But, with The Beginning Set 3 the story gets more intense and leads up to the show's first and second ghosts, both harbingers of bigger and better things to come. Even before those crucial events, the supernatural begins to assert itself when a "real" crystal ball is given to young David Collins. Immediately, he begins to "see" things.
In this boxed set, the drowning death of Collins Plant Manager Bill Malloy is highlighted and becomes darker. In fact, it is his ghost that debut's as the first-ever depicted on the show, when his seaweed drenched corpse warns a terrified Victoria Winters to leave Collinwood or die.
Several episodes later, the young David Collins goes at night to the rundown and ramshackle family mansion, the Old House, where he looks up into the portrait of his great-great-great grandmother Josette Collins, the Lady in White. He implores her spirit to come to him as she frequently does when he needs help. Interrupted by caretaker Matthew Morgan, they leave the darkened drawing room together. Slowly, the portrait begins to shine and the music build. Then, a ghostly white figure appears to step down from the portrait and meander through the house and grounds.
Actress Kathryn Leigh Scott, who portrayed waitress Maggie Evans, was the ghost, saying she was the only actress on set who fit the clothing for Josette and who had a likeness to the portrait.
In addition to all of that, Burke Devlin (played brilliantly by Mitchell Ryan) declares an all-out war against the Collins family, promising to take everything they own, including the fishing fleet, cannery - and the ancestral family home: Collinwood!
Also of great interest in this boxed set are exterior shots, a rarity even today on soap operas. Shots included are of the Great House, the Old House, Widows Hill, Lookout Point and the beach below, Collinsport, the Collins Enterprises and Cannery, the Police Station, the Collinsport Inn, the Blue Whale, and the Evans' Cottage.
Show creators chose Seaview Terrace to represent the exterior of the Collinwood mansion. Located in the picturesque coastal town of Newport, RI, its imposing façade faced out to the edge of the Atlantic, just as writer Art Wallace had described in the original outline for the series. The privately owned house was patterned after a French Chateau, and was converted into student dormitories during the 1950's. It is currently leased by the Salve Reginia University, providing accommodation and classrooms.
Located near the mansion is the Cliff Walk and beach seen in several episodes, including the area where Victoria Winters discovered an incriminating pen that plays a pivotal role in this boxed set.
Also located in Newport, a little further down the coast is the Black Pearl Restaurant, the exterior of which was used as the Blue Whale. It still exists today, though renovations have changed the view commonly seen on the show.
Essex, Connecticut, was used for the town of Collinsport, Maine, including the Collinsport Wharf, Collinsport Enterprises, Main Street and the Evans Cottage. The exteriors of Essex's Griswold Inn was used for the Collinsport Inn and the town Post Office was used for the town Police Station.
Special features in this boxed set include: New Interviews with actors Alexandra Moltke (Victoria Winters), Mitchell Ryan (Burke Devlin), and Conrad Fowkes (Frank Garner.)
These early episodes occurred prior to the arrival of the vampire, Barnabas Collins, played by the gifted Jonathan Frid. Once Frid joined the cast, the show skyrocketed to iconic status. Many fans who began watching once Barnabas became a fixture on the show, never saw these early episodes, so it's wonderful to have them finally available on DVD, to see how it all began!

Berserk - White Hawk (Episodes 10-13) (2002) Review

Berserk - White Hawk (Episodes 10-13) (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The bloody saga between darkness and human will continues with "Berserk 3: White Hawk." While I noted that the second volume lacked a bit in action and intensity (but was still very good and necessary), this third volume comes back with full force containing more story, character development, and outstanding battle scenes.
The series continues with past events in Guts' life that are still adding shape and texture to the person that he has become in the very first episode. A warrior possessed with rage and absolute hatred of himself, Guts craves fighting and is an unstoppable force against his enemies. One of the main storylines of the four episodes is Guts and Caska getting separated from their group after battle. Guts learns how Caska came to met Griffith and why she joined his group. She also reveals why she is envious of Guts. At the same time, the two are being tracked by the enemy. Caska and Guts must learn to fight together side-by-side, or suffer the deadly consequences.
"Berserk" is really shaping up to be one hell of an impressive series. The storytelling is absolutely mesmerizing and the animation suits the characters and the setting. While we still have yet to see what exactly has led Guts to where he was in the very first episode, we are learning more and more about his past which helps us understand where he's coming from. Guts is also showing more emotion in these episodes which leads us to believe that there has to be more to him than being just a violent and raging warrior. We also see Griffith come more and more into power and showing signs of completely devoting himself to his dream. It will be interesting to see what ends up happening between Guts and Griffith, as it's clear that some sort of treachery must've taken place at some point.
This anime series isn't intended for children. These four episodes contain strong and brutal violence, extreme blood and gore, language, nudity, and dark and disturbing themes and imagery. It's crucial to the story that the series be dark and violent as it is painting a horrific picture of warfare and how far some are willing to go to destroy their enemies with hopes of gaining all power over everything. Extras included are outtakes, production sketches, the original TV opening, storyboards and trailers.
"Berserk 3: White Hawk" continues this exciting epic without missing a single beat. The episodes are exciting, heavily involved with the characters, and they do a splendid job of continuing this episodic journey into darkness. If you've made it this far, then you know the power this series holds. For have only seeing 13 episodes, this is already proving to be a remarkable tale.

White Fang Review

White Fang
Average Reviews:

So many translations of White Fang are awful, and this one is the worst of them all! Garishly bright colors and extremely poor animation make it an eyesore and the plot (such as it is) varies so greatly from the original as to be an almost separate story. Everything about White Fang's abusive puppy hood and dog sledding history is neglected, with much of the focus being on a young Native American boy who is his best friend. Anyone who has read the book will know such a thing is laughable. Although the creators of this movie were trying to tone down the violence of an admittedly violent story, I felt that the result was condescending to children's intelligence. No narration and little dialog made the drag even more noticeable. Even though the DVD cover is cute, it houses a dull and lifeless movie.
